The Best Way to Help Her See the Good Person Was to Own the Bad Person

The best way for me to help her see the good person in me was to own the bad person in me. That's the hardest thing I learned in recovery, and it's the whole point of this episode. If you've ever felt like you're walking on eggshells, managing his moods, or watching him be the nicest guy to every stranger while something completely different happens at home, this one's about what's actually going on and why your read on it is accurate, not unreasonable. He Ignores You When You Tell Him He’s Enough

You have told him he is doing enough. That he has achieved enough. And somehow it does not land. This one is personal for me. Lori had a name for what I used to do when I was stuck comparing myself to other men, and it was not flattering. I still catch myself doing it. This episode is about why your opinion of him does not seem to count when he is in that mindset, what it actually costs you while you wait for him to be satisfied, and the one thing about his value, and yours, that took me way too long to learn. If you have ever felt like you are competing with a version of him that only exists on social media, or with men he has never even met, this one's for you. Part of The Couple Cure's Storm series. What Happens When a Man Loses the Role He Built His Life On?

"Would you even recognize the man left standing in front of you?" Most wives read his withdrawal after a lost job, a lost role, or a lost dream as rejection. It's usually something else entirely. This episode breaks down what's actually happening and what's yours to do about it. NOT TO DESTROY HIS PAST — the Odyssey line that reframes what "letting go" is supposed to look like TWO DIFFERENT RESPONSES — why grief and resentment need two completely different reactions from you MORE THAN THE ROLE HE LOST — the one thing you can actually offer him that isn't fixing him If you've ever wondered why he shut down instead of talking to you after something big changed, this one's for you. What His Anger Is Actually Covering Up

His anger isn't the whole story. Underneath it is fear, shame, and expectations he's never said out loud. This video breaks down what's actually happening when he explodes, the difference between an angry man and an unsafe one, and what changes when he starts doing the work. You Became His Only Safe Person. That’s the Problem.

If you feel like you're the only person your husband really opens up to, this video is about why that quietly became your burden, and how to hand it back without losing him. Most men are never taught to be known by anyone, so the one place they learn to be real is with a romantic partner, often the only place. If that's you, you already know the weight of being someone's entire emotional world: the sense that you can't even leave the room without it costing something, that your normal needs for space, rest, or your own friendships somehow register to him as abandonment. In this video I talk honestly about what this looked like in my own marriage, and what it cost Lori. During my last relapse I put everything on her, expected her to make me feel safe, to make my fears disappear, to be the only one holding me up. That wasn't her job. And it isn't yours. I get into why his loneliness keeps becoming your responsibility, why being more available actually makes it worse instead of better, and why it is not your job to be the only person your husband can be real with. You can be one of his people. You were never meant to be all of them. If there has been real harm or abuse in your marriage, please hear this clearly: your safety, and your children's safety, matter more than the marriage. Stepping out from under that weight isn't cruelty. It's health, and you deserve your own support for everything you've carried. And I talk about what changes when he finally builds a circle of other men who know him: you get to be his wife again instead of his lifeline. You get your own life back. Next time: the storm of anger, where it comes from, and how to face it in a healthy way. If he's ready to build that circle, send him to StormReadyMen.com. Explore the C.U.R.E. The Storms He Never Faced Became Yours

The storms your husband never dealt with didn't disappear. You're living inside some of them right now. If you're carrying the weight of betrayal trauma, you already know what it's like to live with a man who is physically present but emotionally gone. This whole series has been about the seven things a man builds to prepare for the storms of life. This is where I tell you what all of it was actually for, and why it matters so much to you. A man who never learned to face his losses doesn't escape them. He carries them. And what he carries lands on you, as emotional distance, numbness, resentment, a shorter temper than the moment deserves. I know, because for years I was that man. I lost a marriage, a career, people I loved, and I buried all of it. When Lori married me, she married a man who was checked out and didn't know why. That wasn't her fault. But she felt every bit of it. In this video I talk about how a husband in recovery who's still playing the victim will try to hand you the blame, for his mood, his distance, his losses, and why his storms are not your fault and not yours to fix. I talk about how to tell the difference between a man who is grieving and a man who is running, so you can trust what your intuition is already telling you. And I talk about why, even when every instinct says protect him, you actually want him to go through the storm instead of around it. A man who has grieved his losses can finally be present with you. A man who's still running never can. If you or someone you love is in crisis, call or text 988, the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline (US). When His Health Isn’t Just His Problem

When he refuses to deal with his own health, it isn't just his problem. It lands on you too, and you already carry enough. Maybe you're the one tracking his appointments, noticing whether he's taking his meds, wondering if you have to manage his health on top of everything else. There's a difference between a man taking care of himself and a man numbing himself, and you can see it from the outside. Jay shares the story of a car his mom couldn't afford to fix, and the rule that shaped how he lived for years: if something rattles, turn up the radio. What that cost his health, his marriage, and Lori. Real health isn't about the gym. It's whether he sees a doctor, takes his medication, and stops assuming everything's fine. A rule that protects you: you can care about his health without becoming his nurse, and definitely not his mother. We also cover mental health, why men are more isolated and more at risk, and why talking to someone is not weakness. If you or someone you love is in crisis, call or text 988, the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline (US). This is the last Foundation Stone. Next: the storms themselves. Is He Resting or Checking Out? How to Tell

When your husband says he needs rest, it can sound like one more excuse to check out. Here's how to tell real rest from another escape, without becoming the person who has to police him. If he's disappeared into screens, the game, or his phone before and called it rest, your guard goes up. That's fair. This video is about the difference between rest that actually restores him and avoidance dressed up as rest, and why the difference shows up in how he comes back to you, not in what he did while he was gone. A man who never rests stays agitated, reactive, and on edge, and all of that lands on you and the family. Real rest brings him back more present and easier to be around. Numbing-out sends him back more anxious and quicker to snap at something small. That return is your signal. You don't have to inspect him or quiz him about what he did. You watch how he shows up afterward. This one runs against instinct. Everything in you may say he should be doing more recovery work, more repair, more effort. But a man who never stops, who feels like he's always earning his place, stays stuck in busyness and gets harder to live with. Sometimes the recovery work itself becomes the new escape. Rest is how he refills the tank. A man with nothing left to give you needs it. Letting him take fifteen minutes outside isn't letting him off the hook. We also cover boundaries: rest with a time limit you both agree on, not one more way for him to disappear. And how, over time, rest stops being an activity and becomes a calmer way he carries himself, in traffic, under stress, at home, and when you ask him hard questions. If you're married to a man in recovery and you want him to have this, send him to StormReadyMen.com to take the assessment. It's built for him. Next: the final piece of the framework, physical health. Chapters 00:00 When his "rest" feels like checking out 00:11 Why this one is scary: him doing less 00:36 Real rest vs another escape 00:51 A man who never rests, and how it lands on you 01:06 What rest actually is 02:08 The box Lori asked me to build 02:51 The real sign: how he comes back 03:18 It only takes 15 to 20 minutes 03:50 Why you want him to rest (against instinct) 04:35 When recovery itself becomes the escape 05:07 Rest as conscious contact with God 05:38 Rest as refilling the tank 06:02 How short real rest can be 06:50 Rest as a frame of mind: the vacation story 07:56 What's not rest 08:16 Boundaries without policing him 09:04 Next: physical health Next steps and resources Next Steps & Resources: Explore the C.U.R.E.
