Reflections on how the Jason Arday plagiarism saga played out

Professor Jason Arday was a British academic who resigned from his historic position as Cambridge University's youngest Black professor following intense media scrutiny and investigations into plagiarism allegations and the fabrications of his biographical achievements. Nine days after his resignation, the 41-year-old scholar was found dead in his South London home in an unexpected but non-suspicious passing that his family blamed on a cruel "campaign of misinformation". Lester Kiewit speaks to writer and commentator Rajeev Balasubramanyam about the proportionality of the media coverage over Arday’s alleged plagiarism and personal achievements.   Good Morning Cape Town with Lester Kiewit is a podcast of the CapeTalk breakfast show.  This programme is your authentic Cape Town wake-up call. Settlers learners launch anti-bullying campaign focused on kindness and supporting victims

Bullying remains a serious issue in South African schools, with many learners experiencing intimidation, exclusion and abuse, often in silence. The RCL at Settlers High School is taking a stand with its new #SettlersChoosesKindness campaign, aimed at supporting learners who may be struggling and encouraging a culture of kindness across the school. The campaign includes an anonymous online initiative where learners can share what they are going through, along with activities designed to get the wider school community involved. The RCL Chair Zoe Morgan speaks to Lester Kiewit about why the campaign was launched, the impact of bullying on learners, and the message they want their school community to hear.   Good Morning Cape Town with Lester Kiewit is a podcast of the CapeTalk breakfast show.  This programme is your authentic Cape Town wake-up call. CPUT shutdown: Why the university says students must leave residences

CPUT spokesperson Lauren Kansley speaks to Lester Kiewit about the university’s decision to suspend lectures indefinitely and close its residences from 4pm, saying the move is aimed at de-escalating escalating violence on campus. She says around 16,000 students live in CPUT residences and that many have already started leaving, while the university is assisting vulnerable students, including those with disabilities. Kansley also describes reports of students being intimidated and forcibly removed from residences, including claims that fire extinguishers were used under doors and that a student suffered an asthma attack and needed hospital treatment. She rejects reports that CPUT has R4.2 billion in outstanding student debt, putting the figure at around R2.1 billion, and defends the university’s financial recovery plan and proposed R3,500 initial payment, saying CPUT needs to improve its financial sustainability and that most students are NSFAS funded. With the SRC saying students will refuse to leave residences, the question remains what happens when the 4pm deadline arrives.   Good Morning Cape Town with Lester Kiewit is a podcast of the CapeTalk breakfast show.  This programme is your authentic Cape Town wake-up call.
