Maps, Music & Mission: An Ordinary Life? | Lay What happens when someone who insists there's nothing particularly extraordinary about his story sits down to tell it? You discover there is. In this episode of Teachable the Podcast, I sit down with my good friend Lay for a conversation that travels across decades, countries, careers and some very different chapters of life. Lay grew up on a mission in Africa — an upbringing he describes as happy and completely normal, despite how unusual it may seem to many of us today. He shares what life on a mission was really like through the eyes of a child and challenges some of the assumptions and misconceptions surrounding missionaries, colonialism and privilege. But that's only the beginning of his story. Lay went on to become a professional cartographer, spending his working life creating maps, while simultaneously carving out another, very different path as a South African musician during the 1970s and 80s. From childhood and faith to music, maps, South Africa and eventually life in the UAE, this is a conversation between two friends reflecting on the experiences, people and unexpected turns that shape a lifetime. There are no claims of having all the answers and no attempt to make an ordinary life sound inspirational. Just stories, perspectives and lessons collected along the way. Because sometimes the people who think their stories are the most ordinary are the ones who remind us why ordinary people can have extraordinary stories. S2 | E3 - Both Sides of the Education Fence

In this episode of The Teachable Podcast, I sit down with educational leader Alveena Abrar for a thought-provoking conversation about leadership, innovation, well-being, and the future of education. Drawing on her extensive experience across the education sector, Alveena explores why some of the biggest challenges in schools are not found in classrooms, but in the gaps between leadership decisions and day-to-day teaching practice. Together, we discuss the importance of clear communication, meaningful professional development, and creating environments where educators feel valued, supported, and empowered. The conversation also tackles one of education's most pressing topics: artificial intelligence. Alveena shares her perspective on why AI should be viewed as a fundamental literacy rather than a passing trend, and why schools must move beyond simply adopting AI for appearances and instead focus on thoughtful, ethical implementation. From teacher burnout and staff well-being to assessment reform and educational innovation, this episode challenges conventional thinking and encourages educators and leaders alike to reflect on the impact they have on those around them. Whether you're a teacher, school leader, curriculum specialist, or simply passionate about education, this episode offers valuable insights into what it takes to bridge the gap between vision and reality in today's schools. Key themes include:• Educational leadership and communication• Teacher well-being and burnout• AI and the future of education• Professional development and teacher empowerment• Innovation and curriculum design• Assessment reform• Building supportive school cultures• Self-reflection and continuous improvement Because great education happens when we are willing to see both sides of the fence.
