    250 Renegades Chapters 3-5 PART 1

    In which Bethanie and Ash discuss chapters 3-5 of Renegades by Marissa Meyer. Part 1 of 2. Nova tries to escape as the villain Winston Pratt, the Puppeteer, controls children from his balloon, but a new armored hero called Sentinel intervenes. Nova and Sentinel fight, and in the chaos Monarch is badly injured, allowing Nova to escape with the Puppeteer before ultimately throwing him to the Renegades and fleeing alone. The story then reveals that Adrian is secretly Sentinel, and he recovers from the battle using his unique ability to bring drawings to life. Back at headquarters, Adrian reflects on the Renegades’ history and visits the injured Monarch, while hiding his identity and lying about his actions. He becomes determined to track down Nova, also known as Nightmare, and bring her to justice. Adrian also checks on his brother Max, who is quarantined due to his dangerous power of absorbing others’ abilities, and helps him recreate the battle through drawings. When Adrian asks to pursue Nightmare, his adoptive fathers refuse, insisting on following proper rules rather than acting recklessly. Although a lead connects Nightmare’s weapon to an Anarchist named Cyanide, Adrian grows frustrated with the Renegades’ cautious approach and fears things may spiral out of control.     249 Renegades Chapters 1-2

    In which Bethanie and Ash discussed Chapters 1-2 of Renegades by Marissa Meyer. Ten years after Ace Anarchy’s death, Nova watches the Renegade Parade, an annual celebration of the Renegades’ victory over the Anarchists, and feels sick as her uncle is publicly mocked. While observing, she encounters a boy named Adrian who catches a thief returning Nova’s bracelet and uses his powers to repair it, revealing himself as a Renegade before Nova rushes off to continue her mission. Climbing to a rooftop, Nova transforms into her alter ego, Nightmare, preparing to assassinate Captain Chromium as part of an Anarchist plot to destroy the Renegade Council. The plan involves her allies attacking simultaneously, but Nova briefly ends up on the wrong rooftop before correcting her position. Watching the powerful Renegades celebrate, including Chromium and his husband, Nova’s anger grows as she reflects on her painful past and desire for revenge. When she finally takes aim, she hesitates, and her shot fails as Chromium turns just in time. Nova is quickly confronted by young Renegade fighters, leading to a fast-paced battle where she manages to subdue some of them. As she attempts to escape, she is stopped by another mysterious hero.     246 The Lunar Chronicles Deleted Scene #2

    In which Bethanie and Soumaya discuss TLC Deleted Scene Number 3 from Scarlet. From:  Cinder, 1st draft Featuring: Cinder and Kai Naming Notes: Like last week’s, Adele later became Adri, Merlin became Dr. Erland, and Coen became Konn Torin. Helpful set-up: Two semi-important things to know about this early draft to keep from being too confused: 1. Originally, the Lunar gift was much more sorcery-based, to the point where talented Lunars could literally shoot fireballs out of their hands. 2. Part of Cinder’s cyborg programming in this early draft included being installed with a “codeword,” and anyone who used the codeword would be able to control her. I ultimately decided this was much too similar to Ella Enchanted and removed it, but the concept did become the basis for the Lunar ability to use mind-control.     245 The Lunar Chronicles Deleted Scene 1

    In which Bethanie and a special guest Katherine discuss the first deleted scene from The Lunar Chronicles. From: Cinder, 1st draft Featuring: Cinder and Kai Naming Notes: For clarity, “Adele” later became Adri, “Merlin” (yes, Merlin) became Dr. Erland; and “Coen” became Konn Torin (and pssst, he was originally a villain, secretly working for Levana! DUN DUN DUN). Editing Notes: I really debated whether or not I should “clean up” the text of these deleted scenes before posting them. Truly, there were times when it was painful for me to read over them and not allow myself to fix this run-on sentence or delete that superfluous adverb, but I thought that posting them in their unedited versions might be useful for some aspiring writers out there to see the text rough and un-polished. Therefore, these scenes have been left untouched, with the exception of very obvious typos or misspellings. Helpful set-up: This scene took place about halfway through the book, when Cinder went to the palace to see Prince Kai but was met with a crowd of protestors and turned away by the guards. In this initial draft, she didn’t have a handy royal android (Nainsi) to alert Kai to her presence, though, so she had to get resourceful… by using her cyborg brain to find a secret passage into the wall, of course!     In which Bethanie and a special guest Ash discuss Heartless Chapters 52-54. After her wedding, Cath visits Hatta and finds that he has lost his sanity, lashing out bitterly and revealing that he too loved Jest. Blaming Hatta, his hats, and everything connected to Chess for the tragedies that unfolded, Cath orders all production stopped and bans future travel between realms. Though Hatta insists they both share responsibility, he admits his role and says he has already paid for it with his mind, just as the Sisters foretold—confirmed when his pocket watch finally stops and he becomes truly mad. Now the Queen of Hearts, Cath endures court duties until the Sisters arrive with Peter Peter in chains, offering her the vengeance she sought in exchange for the price she promised; she accepts, and they carve her heart from her chest, leaving behind only emptiness. Freed from pain and filled with cold fury, Cath presides over Peter Peter’s trial, where both blame one another as her transformation into the vengeful Queen of Hearts reaches its final stage.
