    248 Renegades The Beginning

    In which Bethanie and Ash discuss the Preface and Prologue of Renegades by Marissa Meyer. Prodigies—people with supernatural powers—were once hunted until Nova’s uncle, Ace Anarchy, led an uprising that toppled governments and plunged the world into the violent “Age of Anarchy.” Gatlon City was isolated for two decades until the Renegades, a new group of superheroes, emerged to restore order.     246 The Lunar Chronicles Deleted Scene #2

    In which Bethanie and Soumaya discuss TLC Deleted Scene Number 3 from Scarlet. From:  Cinder, 1st draft Featuring: Cinder and Kai Naming Notes: Like last week’s, Adele later became Adri, Merlin became Dr. Erland, and Coen became Konn Torin. Helpful set-up: Two semi-important things to know about this early draft to keep from being too confused: 1. Originally, the Lunar gift was much more sorcery-based, to the point where talented Lunars could literally shoot fireballs out of their hands. 2. Part of Cinder’s cyborg programming in this early draft included being installed with a “codeword,” and anyone who used the codeword would be able to control her. I ultimately decided this was much too similar to Ella Enchanted and removed it, but the concept did become the basis for the Lunar ability to use mind-control.     245 The Lunar Chronicles Deleted Scene 1

    In which Bethanie and a special guest Katherine discuss the first deleted scene from The Lunar Chronicles. From: Cinder, 1st draft Featuring: Cinder and Kai Naming Notes: For clarity, “Adele” later became Adri, “Merlin” (yes, Merlin) became Dr. Erland; and “Coen” became Konn Torin (and pssst, he was originally a villain, secretly working for Levana! DUN DUN DUN). Editing Notes: I really debated whether or not I should “clean up” the text of these deleted scenes before posting them. Truly, there were times when it was painful for me to read over them and not allow myself to fix this run-on sentence or delete that superfluous adverb, but I thought that posting them in their unedited versions might be useful for some aspiring writers out there to see the text rough and un-polished. Therefore, these scenes have been left untouched, with the exception of very obvious typos or misspellings. Helpful set-up: This scene took place about halfway through the book, when Cinder went to the palace to see Prince Kai but was met with a crowd of protestors and turned away by the guards. In this initial draft, she didn’t have a handy royal android (Nainsi) to alert Kai to her presence, though, so she had to get resourceful… by using her cyborg brain to find a secret passage into the wall, of course!     In which Bethanie and a special guest Ash discuss Heartless Chapters 52-54. After her wedding, Cath visits Hatta and finds that he has lost his sanity, lashing out bitterly and revealing that he too loved Jest. Blaming Hatta, his hats, and everything connected to Chess for the tragedies that unfolded, Cath orders all production stopped and bans future travel between realms. Though Hatta insists they both share responsibility, he admits his role and says he has already paid for it with his mind, just as the Sisters foretold—confirmed when his pocket watch finally stops and he becomes truly mad. Now the Queen of Hearts, Cath endures court duties until the Sisters arrive with Peter Peter in chains, offering her the vengeance she sought in exchange for the price she promised; she accepts, and they carve her heart from her chest, leaving behind only emptiness. Freed from pain and filled with cold fury, Cath presides over Peter Peter’s trial, where both blame one another as her transformation into the vengeful Queen of Hearts reaches its final stage.     242 Heartless Chapters 48-51

    In which Bethanie and a special guest discuss Heartless Chapters 48-51. Devastated by Jest’s death, Cath begs Time to undo it, but nothing changes. She dreams of the Three Sisters, who deny responsibility and offer her a deal: they will deliver Peter Peter for revenge if she gives them “the heart of a queen” by marrying the King. Cath agrees, and the dream’s key limes remain when she wakes. Cath brings the King a key lime pie and publicly apologizes; charmed, he agrees to marry her in three days. She no longer fears becoming Queen. As she prepares for the wedding in a lavish red gown, Cath seethes with anger. She barely restrains her hatred for Mary Ann and finds no comfort in Cheshire’s warning that she has abandoned all whimsy and hope. Rejecting her past, she orders the palace’s white rose tree torn down and replaced with red roses. When her parents ask if marriage will make her happy, she replies that they should have asked her that long ago.     241 Heartless Chapters 45-47

    In which Bethanie and a special guest discuss Heartless chapters 45-47. At the Crossroads, Cath must find a way to Chess without using any doors. Realizing they must pass through a looking glass, she discovers a shrinking potion and a small mirror that will serve as the entrance. Before they can continue, Cath hears Mary Ann screaming from behind a gate that leads to Peter’s pumpkin patch. Despite the Sisters’ warnings, Cath goes alone to save her. Mary Ann reveals the truth: Lady Peter is the Jabberwock, transformed by the same tainted pumpkin seeds that changed the Mock Turtle. Peter has been hiding her while searching for a cure, and now plans to feed Mary Ann to the creature. Peter attacks Cath before she can free her friend. Jest, Raven (in human form), and Hatta arrive to help. Peter blames Hatta for planting the cursed seeds, though Cath recognizes Peter’s own choices deepened the tragedy. When the Jabberwock descends, Cath kills it with the Vorpal Sword. In revenge, Peter immediately beheads Jest and flees. Heartbroken and enraged, Cath vows to take Peter’s head in return.
