    #355 The Greatest Metal Anthems of All Time

    “I wanna hear THAT at my grocery store, when I’m going for the meat section…”   Whether it’s the song we all rise for at sports ball events,  the first song on Rush’s “Fly By Night” album (not to mention the first song on Anthrax’s EP of classic rock covers), or the sing-along, encore at the end of a rock show, ANTHEMS represent a clarion call, a rallying cry that unites fans in unspeakable joy, unity, and celebration. It’s almost always the song that EVERYONE knows (even your grandmother) and is very much NOT a deep cut.    “AC/DC’s kind of an anthem band…they have at least one on every album…”   In fact, ANTHEMS are those kinds of songs where, if you hear one in a public place: at a bar, a restaurant, the grocery store, or a friend’s party, you’re not going to NOT like it.     #354 Headbangers Ball: The Greatest Metal TV Show Ever Made

    “Today is all about 7’s…”   We can’t believe it…it’s officially been SEVEN years since we began our podcasting journey, and as of this episode, we are celebrating SEVEN years of heavy metal podcasting excellence!  And in the spirit of heavy metal greatness, what better way to celebrate and commemorate the completion of our SEVENTH year than a tribute to the best thing MTV ever did for metal heads that started way back in the late 80’s: HEADBANGERS BALL!!!   “It was the novelty, because that was the only place where you could get it…”   Premiering on Saturday April 18, 1987, MTV began what would become a weekly Saturday night tradition and/or ritual for metal heads with HEADBANGERS BALL, the one section of MTV that belonged to the metal community…it was OUR show, OUR music, and OUR videos, made by metal heads for metal heads (ironically, not unlike this podcast).   “SEVEN!”   Granted, there were often a lot of glam and hair metal videos mixed in, but there were always a plethora of obscure thrash, power metal, and other assorted heavy metal videos on there that you absolutely could not see anywhere else on MTV except for when you tuned in to “The Ball” (NOTE:  this is where the crochety “back in my day” sentiment comes into play because, as everyone with access to the internet knows, in the late 80’s, rock radio sure as hell wasn’t doing much to promote metal artists, and we certainly didn’t have Spotify or YouTube at our disposal. “The Ball” was all we had…mark the time.).   “They weren’t Trans then, dude…they were 100% dudes and they were the Savatage Brothers…”   Break out your finest relaxers and get ready for a celebratory stroll down memory lane, and understand that since we’re discussing music videos, you’re gonna need all the sensory enhancement you can muster to thoroughly maximize your enjoyment of this episode.     #353- Death — Scream Bloody Gore: The Album That Created Death Metal

    “Would it be fair to say that horror metal and death metal are kinda…symbiotic?”   Released May 25, 1987, SCREAM BLOODY GORE, the debut album from Florida death metal pioneers DEATH, marks a dark and transformative turning point from thrash metal into something else…something with “thrash overtones” that “sounds like thrash” but also doesn’t. While it seemed to be the next logical evolutionary step for extreme metal, we weren’t exactly sure what it was.     “I wonder how many modern bands still do it?”   Maybe the song is named after the band and referenced in the chorus. Maybe the song is named after the band but there’s no reference to the band’s name anywhere in the lyrics.     #350 Was 1986 the Best Year in Metal? Master of Puppets, Reign in Blood, Peace Sells Turn 40

    “If you were gonna be a stripper…what would your stage name be?”   When you think about 1986, it’s almost hard to fathom that we are 40 years away from it. Four decades away from perhaps THE biggest year in metal, and we’re not just saying that because we were still young and impressionable, but because it was quite literally THAT epic of a year!    March, September, and October of 1986 gave us Master of Puppets, Peace Sells… (But Who’s Buying?), and Reign In Blood (respectively), and that’s only 3 albums of thrash greatness from that year!    There was also the (now classic) documentary “Heavy Metal Parking Lot”, showing a bunch of young metal heads pre-gaming for a Judas Priest show.     #349 - The First and The Last

    “You like to hear how they have progressed or digressed…or either…or gressed…”   This episode is a lot like looking at pictures of family when everyone is much younger and then looking at recent pictures of family and realizing that after enough time, a LOT changes.    Just as people grow and age and (hopefully) evolve over time, no artist should currently be EXACTLY as they were when they first started, as there should be an obvious evolution and progression of their style and sound over multiple albums and decades, from their very FIRST to their very LAST.   “I’m liking how this is going…we could do this for hours…”   Prepare yourself for THE FIRST AND THE LAST, a snapshot in time from the killer opener on the very first album to the killer closer on the very last (or in some cases, most recent) album; basically it’s the very first from the very first paired with the very last from the very last.     “The word of the episode, ladies and gentlemen, is…”   By the time you’ve finished this episode, you will no doubt have “the word of the episode” carved deep into your subconscious, so much so that you’ll wonder where you put that lock blade buck knife your cousin gave you for Christmas.    Realize that “sometimes you gotta check your oil” and a large majority of us “don’t think John Cougar knows how to eat a chili dog”.
