    #345 LAMB OF GOD Into Oblivion Album Review

    “It’s like we’re missing someone…”   Released Friday, March 13, 2026, INTO OBLIVION, the latest offering from Richmond, Virginia’s LAMB OF GOD, features a new logo and an album cover that hints at the darker atmosphere that dwells within.   “It’d be wrong to do a clinky without Russ…”   Chock full of enough sick grooves, primal screams, and disgustingly brutal riffs to give anyone who hears it a healthy case of “stank face”, INTO OBLIVION checks all of the prerequisite boxes necessary to maintain the interest of the most loyal fans while also offering enough sonic surprises to capture the curiosity of potentially new LAMB OF GOD fans.     #344 - EMBERING EFFIGY - OUT OF THE WOODS Album Review

    “Let’s keep the dumb fuhqery to a minimum today…”   EMBERING EFFIGY, the “Southern Fried Thrash Metal” threesome hailing from the outskirts of Atlanta, Georgia are making some noise in venues all across the Southeast with their blistering live shows and their recently released new album, OUT OF THE WOODS, featuring 8 tracks of old school thrash infused with a generous blend of blast beats, high energy punk, filthy breakdowns, and even some old school “mosh parts” for good measure.  There’s enough fast stuff, heavy stuff, and sick stuff on this album to give anyone who hears it a complete stank face makeover.    “We’ve never had this many inputs before…”   We recently had a chance to hang out with EMBERING EFFIGY and do a full playthrough of OUT OF THE WOODS (deep within the insulated walls of Bunkerpoon Studios), including some track by track insights from the band as well as some Q&A about their history, their live shows, and of course the new album and everything that went into making it (along with some ultra hilarious vulgarity that’s too obscene to be mentioned here).   “I want a juicy girl…”   If you haven’t seen EMBERING EFFIGY live as of yet (or if you ‘blacked out’ only three songs into their set like ‘some people’…), they are definitely one of those bands you must experience extremely LOUD and LIVE, so if you need something to tide you over until you can catch one of their shows, pick up OUT OF THE WOODS and crank it up to 11!   “Maybe we should be listening to THAT in the car…instead of KISS.”   It’s time to “Make Thrash Dangerous Again” because we’re packed in so “tight and intimate” that whoever is in the middle is “going skiing”.     #343 - SIDE TWO VERSUS SIDE ONE

    Ever since compact discs came out in the mid-1980s, the concept of SIDE 1 and SIDE 2 on an album sort of fell by the wayside. And with this new quantum leap in technology, the entire process of consuming music began to transform.    By the late 80’s and early 90’s, CD sales began outselling vinyl records and cassette tapes, due in large part to convenience and technological innovation, as vinyl records (albums) were limited to a maximum of 20 minutes or so per side and cassette tapes maxed out at around 30 minutes per side. But prior to compact discs, consuming music was (at a minimum) a two-step process which involved inserting the cassette into your tape deck and pressing play or placing the album on your turntable and dropping the needle to begin your music enjoyment experience.    With the advent of compact discs, the maximum recording space jumped to 74 minutes, far exceeding the limitations of records and tapes, and bonus: you didn’t have to flip anything over and repeat the process as all of the album tracks were included on one side (so to speak) as one complete, seamless work that systematically eliminated the technologically imposed intermission which required ejecting the cassette or removing the stylus from the album and flipping it over to SIDE TWO, as a CD version of an album quickly became a singular entity devoid of one side or another and just became one complete work (think Reign In Blood on cassette, where both sides are repeated).   In the case of a near perfect album, sides didn’t really matter, but what we’ve come to notice over the years is that SIDE TWO would sometimes be superior to SIDE ONE. Granted, this is not by any means an exact science nor is it always a guarantee, but many of the finest albums in metal history have a SIDE TWO that is much better than SIDE ONE.     #340 ANTHRAX featuring JOHN BUSH, aka BUSHTHRAX

    “If I hadn’t have known that was Anthrax, I would have guessed it was Alice In Chains…”   The early 90’s was a strange time for metal, most notably due to the change in the musical landscape with the emergence of the Seattle scene and Alice In Chains becoming one of the key crossover bands to bridge the transition from thrash to the next wave of darker, grungier sounding heavy metal.    “Every time you do that, I have a less chance of getting laid…”   While ANTHRAX began the 90’s with a much darker and angrier sound on Persistence of Time, the darkness and heaviness of their sound would become further amplified with the departure of Joey Belladonna and the addition of JOHN BUSH (formerly of Armored Saint) on vocals, resulting in a new era of Anthrax: BUSHTHRAX!    With more grit and heft in the vocals than before, the JOHN BUSH ERA of ANTHRAX is definitely a different flavor than the band’s output throughout the 80’s with Joey Belladonna, and with the changing of the guard in the early 90’s due to the growing popularity of the Seattle sound, the time was right for a slight alteration to the thrashier sounds of 80’s era ThrashThrax, resulting in the darker, more aggressive BUSHTHRAX era that would follow for the next decade or so.   “Alright, well it’s not like we’ve never done that for you before…”   Always remember that “springtime LSD is the best time for LSD” and that “it’s not as fun for me when I push away”.     #338 MEGADETH Album Review

    “You know what I’m hearing? This sounds like it could have been…the sidepiece…to The Black Album…”   There’s almost a strange, sarcastic satisfaction in knowing that the new self-titled MEGADETH album will forever be known (at least in our neck of the woods anyway) as “The White Album”.    “Every time you keep talking, I just see shapes and letters…”   Released on January 23, 2026, MEGADETH is the 17th studio album from Dave Mustaine and Company and represents the final chapter in the 40+ year history of the angriest, snarliest, and most progressively technical thrash band of The Big Four.    And oh yeah, it debuted at NUMBER ONE on Billboard and at the top of the charts all over the world!!!   While MEGADETH represents the band’s epilogue, it contains all of the elements that have defined the band’s sound and the ethos of the genre that they co-created with the rest of The Big Four. All of the essentials are there: insanely technical riffs, face melting guitar solos, triumphant twin guitar harmonies, as well as some more straight ahead, laid back and accessible material that screams “radio friendly” without being dull or boring. If you’re a fan, you’ll dig it. And if you’re not a fan, who knows?
