Petersfield's Mayor reports as budget process begins

Petersfied Town Council's Mayor, Councillor Jamie Matthews, talks to Mike Waddington about what's been happening in the community and within the Council, mainly the preparations for the Budget. This will be set in January and already has pressures (like the National Insurance increase) but also how savings have been made in a new Grounds Maintenance contract, which started in October. He also comments on Local Government Reorganisation and ABCD - Asset Based Community Development. After Remembrance Sunday - the largest civic event in the Town - and Armistice Day, the Christmas lights are assembled for the 20 November switch on.   See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Sky Watch - the night skies above Petersfield in November 2026

There's an unwritten universal law known in stargazing as 'Spode's Law' which says if something can go wrong it will go wrong! For stargazers, this usually manifests as cloudy skies whenever there's an astronomical event; but allow Sky Watch to introduce you to one Guillaume Le Gentil, an 18th century French astronomer who was perhaps the unluckiest observer ever! Discover what you can see in the Petersphere night skies this month with the latest Sky Watch. Written by Petersphere resident, astronomical expert and amateur astronomer Geoff Burt, and voiced by Claire Vennis, every month Shine Radio presents a Sky Watch of our unique dark skies. The hero dogs who find survivors in the rubble of disaster zones

Jarvis the working cocker and Bailey the labrador are highly trained Urban Search & Rescue (USAR) dogs.  Along with veteran handler Graham Currie, the dogs are first responders to disaster scenes in the UK such as train crashes or collapsed buildings. Bailey is also an ISAR dog - working internationally as part of a search and rescue cooperation that came into being after the 9/11 attacks.  Their job is to find survivors among the rubble who may be buried or unconscious, so that they can receive medical help as fast as possible. They are part of the Technical Rescue and USAR Station at Essex Fire & Rescue Service. This interview is packed with practical insight into the dogs' training and the organisational and logistic support of the wider team. Graham describes their experiences together in the kind of life and death situations that few dogs or humans encounter.  Graham also talks compellingly about the team's volunteering as an International Search & Rescue (ISAR) team -  Bailey's most recent deployment was to Venezuela in the wake of its huge earthquake.  Urban search and rescue is a discipline that demands exceptional steadiness, where no two days are the same, and in which their success is the difference between life and death for survivors.  Graham and his dogs travel long distances when required, so must be at ease on boats, planes, being airlifted by a helicopter or swinging from a rope so once they arrive they are ready to work. Speaking to Mike Waddington he talks about the role and the large consensus there is around policy but differences must be debated as a road to better solutions.  He talks about the areas that need to be under consideration and his own 'red lines.' He also says how important it is to listen to the people on the front line in the NHS and Social Care. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
