    How Bad Are You, and How Good Could You Be? | Goodness

    You are capable of far more evil and far more good than you know. Galatians 5:14-25, from the Christian Freedom series through Galatians. “Goodness must be planted in you.” Galatians 5:14-25 (ESV) WHERE WE FIND OURSELVES We want the little line between our birth and our death to mean something. So we set out to do good by our own effort, and we wake the monster. The flesh can wear the clothing of goodness, but behind every kiss are sharp teeth. No one is good, not even one. WHAT CHRIST HAS DONE Christ alone is good, and He came down into a world of thorns and thistles. He took our sin into Himself as if it were His own, carried it to the cross, and buried it. Then He rose like the waters of Eden, left our sin in the dirt, and overflowed from death into life. Now His goodness is growing in you and through you. VISION FOR THE CHRISTIAN LIFE For a church to stop relying on ourselves and depend on the Spirit to animate the goodness of Christ in us. Then goodness flows out, strong and gentle, into our homes, neighborhoods, and work, until our city starts to look more like Eden.     Patience | How to finally be patient with God and others

    “Patience comes from God’s patience with you.” WHERE WE FIND OURSELVES We live in an instant-gratification world and cannot wait on anything, least of all God. It started in a garden: a snake offered a shortcut, the fruit was taken, and ever since we bite and devour one another. Short-nostriled tempers, fits of anger, families where everyone gets bit. Patience with others now seems impossible for us. WHAT CHRIST HAS DONE God is slow to anger, long of nostrils, holding back His own justice with His own hands so we have time to grow. Then He came in Christ. We spat on patience, whipped it, nailed it to a cross, and He never bit back: “Father, forgive them.” He rose and gave us His Spirit to animate Christ’s patience in us. VISION FOR THE CHRISTIAN LIFE For the church to become a people who walk by the Spirit and keep in step with Him daily, drawing Christ’s patience up from the root; long-nosed with one another, letting anger mature into encouragement; gardening thorny people with thick gloves and open hands, refusing to give up on anyone God is not done with.     Kindness | Why the best things in life can't be earned and aren't free

    “God spoils you. Now spoil others.” Galatians 5:14-25 (ESV) WHERE WE FIND OURSELVES We are nice, not kind. Nice gives people what they deserve, and they can pay it back. Kindness spoils people with undeserved favor, and the monster in us will not allow it. The flesh keeps score: a ledger with our spouse, kids made to earn our approval, friends kept behind walls until they prove worthy. We end up lonely, nice enough to get through the day. WHAT CHRIST HAS DONE The best things in life are not earned, and they are not free. Someone else pays. Christ came down from heaven chasing people who did not deserve Him, died in our place, and grew in the belly of death to bring life to what had not earned it. He shares His whole inheritance with us as our big brother, then gives His Spirit to animate His kindness in us. VISION FOR THE CHRISTIAN LIFE For the church to become a people who have tasted and seen how kind God has been with us. They stop keeping score. And instead walk by the Spirit daily until Christ’s kindness rises in us as fruit. Then we hand over our crowns, learn names, feed those who cannot pay us back, and set seats at our tables for people who do not deserve them.     Peace as Fruit | What kind of war brings real peace?

    “Peace is not a project. It’s a person.” WHERE WE FIND OURSELVES Life is not supposed to be this way, and we all know it. So we blame: the other party, the boss, the spouse, the kids. But Paul says the war is not out there. It is in us. The flesh is a two-faced monster, self-reliance on one side and blame on the other. The best it can build is a Pax Romana: a quiet house, a managed marriage. Not peace. Quiet. WHAT CHRIST HAS DONE Peace is not a project. It is a person. Christ, the one whole human life, walked into our broken world and on the cross held everything wrong with us as His own. The chastisement that brought us peace was upon Him. Then He rose, showed His wounded side, and said, “Peace be with you.” He Himself is our peace. VISION FOR THE CHRISTIAN LIFE For the church to become a people whose peace is grown, not carved; who lay down our small empires and keep in step with the Spirit, drawing the shalom of Christ into ordinary life. Whole at home first, then in the church and the workplace, then seeking the shalom of our city as the first fruits of a world made right.     Joy | Why joy isn’t something you can find

    “Joy isn’t found. It finds you.” WHERE WE FIND OURSELVES We were made for Eden: a land of delight, a table of friends, and the face of God. Then we bit the fruit and the gates closed. Now the flesh, the monster within, chases joy on its own terms, squeezing delight out of thorns, and we either despair or bite harder. Joy cannot be found by our own effort. WHAT CHRIST HAS DONE Christ is the land, the people, and the blessing of joy. For the joy set before Him, He endured the cross, and you were that joy. He became the man of sorrows so we could become men and women of great joy, and He opened the gates of Eden through His pierced body. VISION FOR THE CHRISTIAN LIFE For the church to become a people who depend on the Spirit instead of ourselves, branches drawing the joy of Christ from the Vine, sorrowful yet always rejoicing. A garden on the Treasure Coast where the world finds the joy it has been searching for, hidden in plain sight.     To Kill the Monster Within | Why fighting the monster within only makes it stronger

    “Self-reliance grows the monster within.” WHERE WE FIND OURSELVES Carl Jung was right that every one of us carries a monster within. Paul says it is worse: self-reliance feeds it. Ignore the monster and it grows; fight it in your own strength and it grows more. Religious or irreligious, we each keep a law of our own to earn the good life; but the monster in us only grows. WHAT CHRIST HAS DONE Christ took on the likeness of sinful flesh and on the cross He wore the monster in us. When He was crucified, the monster within us was put to death; when He rose, He left it in the grave. Those who belong to Christ Jesus have already crucified the flesh. It is not a task to perform but a finished work to trust. VISION FOR THE CHRISTIAN LIFE The Grove to become a grove: a people who refuse to depend on themselves and keep in step with the Spirit together, unity without uniformity, until the life of Christ grows out of us as love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.     The War Within | Why freedom is not a license to sin but a license to love

    “Freedom is a license to love.” WHERE WE FIND OURSELVES We long for a city on a hill, a people who have our back, yet too often we are known and rejected. When we are not loved as we hoped, the flesh stirs and we bite. Biting becomes a habit, the habit becomes devouring, and a sheep becomes a wolf. There is a war within every one of us. WHAT CHRIST HAS DONE God Himself became a slave to us in love. He washed the feet of the man who would betray Him and prayed from the cross for those who pierced Him. We arrested love, mocked love, and buried love, but love broke death and rose. His love cannot be destroyed, and He carried us, outsiders, into the heavenly city of love that is growing here on the earth. VISION FOR THE CHRISTIAN LIFE For the church to become a city on a hill in the Treasure Coast: the heavenly city, hidden in the earthly city, that shines with the love of the heavenly city.
