Hello and welcome to the Cultural Peeps Podcast. My name is Iain Wheeldon and I’m a Senior Lecturer in the School of Arts and Cultures at Newcastle University. This Podcast series is part of an ongoing project which explores different careers across the cultural sectors. I really want this series to do three things; The first aim is to help people understand the huge range of ever-changing job profiles that now exist across these complex and interconnected sectors. The second is aim is to help people interpret job titles in the context of different venues and organisations – often, jobs with the same title can be radically different depending on the organisation. The third aim is to help listeners understand that the people that make up any field of work are all human and are ultimately making human decisions, and that in turn plays a significant part in their unfolding careers and decision making processes.

    Episode 54 - Emma Parsons (Freelance Consultant)

    n Episode 54 of the Cultural Peeps Podcast I'm joined by Emma Parsons. Emma has been a freelance consultant for almost 20 years, working with organisations in the arts, heritage, cultural and environmental sectors to help them connect, to plan and to thrive. She specialises in helping organisations develop their audiences and participants, putting them at the heart of their activities. In our chat we talk about Emma’s career – which started with her first degree in Leeds, where her interest in Museum work was ignited through a connection with documents from the Cold War. After graduation Emma undertook a lengthy stint of volunteering at Abbot Hall, which she describes as critical in helping her define what she wanted to do in her career. We also chat about her time as a Project Development Manager at Bolton Metropolitan Borough Council Leisure Services before then going on to work as a Development Manager at The Harris Museum & Art Gallery in Preston – somewhere I went to a lot as a student, during both my A-levels and Foundation course. Emma then went on to work as the Marketing Manager at The Whitworth Art Gallery in Manchester, before moving across the city to join the team at the Imperial War Museum North as the Head of Marketing & PR, where she stayed for 6 years, before initially dropping down to 4 days to dip her toe into what became a permanent move into Freelance work. We also touch on Emma’s work on the Loud in Libraries CIC where acts like Idles, Sam Fender and Adele played to small audiences in Local Libraries. More recently Emma has qualified as a RD1st coach.     Episode 53 - Marc Jobst (Director, Writer and Producer)

    This episode is with Director, Writer and Producer, Marc Jobst. Marc is probably best known for his work on the Netflix Shows Daredevil, The Witcher and One Piece but has enjoyed a wide ranging and fascinating career in theatre, radio, television and film. Marc is an alumnus of Newcastle University, where he studied Agriculture. During his time as an undergraduate he was drawn towards acting and storytelling through his involvement with NUTs (The Newcastle University Theatre Society), The Gulbenkian Theatre – now Northern Stage, and the Shakespeare residency at the Theatre Royal. We chat about his first theatre company – Three Monkeys, which he formed after university, and toured the UK with, before starring in a critically acclaimed one-man production of the Loneliness of the Long-Distance Runner, directed by John Yorke. After producing both television and radio shows for the BBC and Tyne Tees television, Marc went moved into freelance television and Film directing. In our conversation we chat about what is like to direct huge shows for major studios like Netflix and how he approaches the creative process of storytelling. Most recently, Marc developed and directed the live action adaptation of the tremendously successful Japanese anime series, One Piece which premiered on Netflix in 2023.     Episode 52 - Philippa Carter (Founder of Imagining Better)

    Episode 52 is with Dr Philippa Carter. A Researcher and Consultant, with over 15 years of experience in the Heritage and Funding sector. Philippa is the founder of Imaging Better, an organisation that works with Local Authorities, Culture & Heritage Organisations, Communities and Universities to find ways to help people discover, learn from, engage with, ask questions about, and get involved in Heritage. In our chat we talk about Philippa’s time working for the National Lottery Heritage Fund, initially as a Grants Officer in the Scotland Office and then as Casework Manager in the North East of England Office. We also talk about Philippa’s time working as a Senior Consultant for Tricolor Associates, where she led on activity planning for clients on large scale projects, including Canterbury Cathedral’s Canterbury Journey project. We also chat about her Masters in Heritage Education & Interpretation, and the subsequent PhD in Geography and Heritage Studies - which she completed whilst starting a family during the pandemic. As a Freelancer, Philippa has worked on a wide range of projects including a multi-disciplinary initiative called Flourish. As part of that project the Phillipa worked on a new co-produced toolkit that aims to make commissioning fairer, strengthen long-term partnerships, and help create the biggest positive impact for communities. The toolkit reimagines commissioning in the creative and cultural sector, offering insights, data, and recommendations to support practitioners and shape stronger cultural policy.     Episode 51 - Rachael Wragg (Heritage Stonemason at Lincoln Cathedral)

    Today’s guest is Rachael Wragg, a Heritage Stonemason at Lincoln Cathedral. If you are on Instagram, you might know Rachael from her award-winning account ‘TheGingerMason’, which has over 100,000 followers. After Rachael starting the account as an online portfolio to showcase her work during her apprenticeship, it rapidly gained a huge following through which she now shares the skills, challenges and quirks of life as a Cathedral stonemason. Her unique perspective gives viewers a really interesting glimpse of spaces around the Cathedral that most people never get to see – so it’s definitely worth checking her TheGingerMason account. Rachael initially went to university to study Fine Art and we talk about the difference between apprenticeships and Higher Education University degrees – and how she felt pressure, like many of her peers at that point in her life to follow a traditional Higher Education route, which she retrospectively says was probably not the right choice for her at that time. After a period of working in retail, and painting portraits to supplement her income, she was sent an advert by a friend for a trainee stonemason apprenticeship at Lincoln Cathedral, funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund. Her application was successful and she started retraining in her late 20’s, gaining an NVQ in banker masonry (level 2 & 3) which she then followed with a Foundation Degree in Historic Building Conservation & Repair with the Cathedral’s Workshop Foundation. She is currently undertaking a Masters in Historic Building Archaeology alongside her job at the cathedral.     Episode 50 - Tony Butler OBE (CEO of Derby Museums)

    My guest today is Tony Butler OBE, the Executive Director at Derby Museums – an independent organisation that is made up of 3 venues; The Derby Museum and Art Gallery, The Museum of Making & Pickford’s house. In our chat, Tony describes how he discovered Museum work through volunteering before then going on to undertake a master’s programme in Museology at the University of East Anglia. Tony then went on to work as Curator of Human History Isle of Wight Council Museum Service before joining Ipswich Museum as the Public Services Manager. He then took a pay cut to move to the Museum of East Anglian Life (now the Food Museum) – so that he could start to influence the changes he wanted to see in the sector. In our chat we also talk about Tony’s experience on the Clore Leadership Programme, through which he spent with The Friends of the Earth and the New Economics Foundation learning about their approaches and initiatives. During this period, he also read ‘Bowling Alone’ by Robert Putnam and saw an influential TED talk by Martin Seligman. Tony realised that he could combine all these elements together to potentially create high levels of environment care and wellbeing within the Museum. After speaking at a conference about wellbeing and enterprise he made a connection with the Paul Hamlyn foundation who offered to fund the Happy Museum Project – which went on to fund organisations to develop networks and think about how their museums could act as a place to support wellbeing. We also chat about Tony’s work as a trustee at Kids in Museums and Foundation Derbyshire – and how these additional roles can be a source of nourishment as well as a way of keeping yourself fresh and inspired. Finally, we talk about the future of Museums – and specifically what this looks like from a regional perspective.     Episode 49 - Alex Evans (Founder & Director of Larger Us)

    This episode features a chat with Alex Evans, the founder and executive Director of ‘Larger Us’, which is a community of change-makers who share the aim of using psychology for good – to bridge divides, build broader coalitions and bring people together. Alex is the author of "The Myth Gap: What Happens When Evidence and Arguments Aren't Enough?", which is a book about the how power of deep stories can help us unlock transformational change. This is a text I’ve used with my own students when exploring the power storytelling. Alex has also previously worked as a Campaign Director at Avaaz, the 50-million-member global citizens' movement. He’s also worked in the UN Secretary-General's office on climate and sustainability, and as Special Adviser to two Secretaries of State at the Department for International Development. In our chat we explore the highs and lows of Alex’s fascinating journey and what that led him to set up Larger Us back in 2018.     Episode 48 - Bridget McKenzie (Director of Climate Museum UK & Culture Declares Emergency)

    This episode is a chat with Bridget McKenzie, the founding director of Climate Museums UK. In our chat we talk about Bridget’s career, which includes working at as an education officer at Tate, and as the Head of Learning at the British Library, and we explore how a value driven approach to work drove her to leave a senior role in a major culture institution to cofound her own company, Flow Associates in 2006. Bridget is also the co-founder of Culture Declares Emergency, a growing movement of individuals and organisations who recognise that the cultural sector can be a leading contributor in the transformation of social and economic systems to create a regenerative world in which biodiverse life is protected and the livelihoods of people are sustained with equality.     Episode 47 - Corinne Fowler (Professor of Colonialism and Heritage)

    My guest today is Corinne Fowler, Professor of Colonialism and Heritage at Leicester University. Between 2018 and 2022, Corinne directed a child-led history and writing project called 'Colonial Countryside: National Trust Houses Reinterpreted' and has also worked on the rural racism project. In 2020, she co-authored a National Trust report that explored the colonial connections between 93 Properties that are now in the Care of the Trust and global slave trades, goods and products of enslaved labour and the East India Company and the British Raj. After its release, the report attracted huge media interest and led to hundreds of articles which debated not only its content, but also the work and lives of the authors and the wider role of the National Trust. We talk about what it’s like to be the recipient of intense media scrutiny, and the strategies that Corinne employed during this high-profile public debate. Hello and welcome to the Cultural Peeps Podcast. My name is Iain Wheeldon and I’m a Senior Lecturer in the School of Arts and Cultures at Newcastle University. This Podcast series is part of an ongoing project which explores different careers across the cultural sectors. I really want this series to do three things; The first aim is to help people understand the huge range of ever-changing job profiles that now exist across these complex and interconnected sectors. The second is aim is to help people interpret job titles in the context of different venues and organisations – often, jobs with the same title can be radically different depending on the organisation. The third aim is to help listeners understand that the people that make up any field of work are all human and are ultimately making human decisions, and that in turn plays a significant part in their unfolding careers and decision making processes.
