“Political Fantasy” (Age of Ash by Daniel Abraham) | FBOM Ep. 55

This month for our conversation on dinosaurs, we read Blood Adept by Glynn Stewart. Here is a brief description of the book:

Kithamar is a center of trade and wealth, an ancient city with a long, bloody history where countless thousands live and their stories unfold.

    This is Alys's.

When her brother is murdered, a petty thief from the slums of Longhill sets out to discover who killed him and why. But the more she discovers about him, the more she learns about herself, and the truths she finds are more dangerous than knives.

Swept up in an intrigue as deep as the roots of Kithamar, where the secrets of the lowest born can sometimes topple thrones, the story Alys chooses will have the power to change everything.

“Dinosaurs” (Blood Adept by Glynn Stewart) | FBOM Ep. 54

This month for our conversation on political fantasy, we read Age of Ash by Daniel Abraham. Here is a brief description of the book:

Hard rides and long nights as a cattle hand prepared Teer for the harsh life of a bounty hunter on the Unity’s eastern frontier. His fate now tied to the disguised El-Spehari demigod Kard, his quick eye and steady shooting hand have kept them both alive—even when the bounty hunters decided justice required taking a fugitive beyond the reach of the Unity’s law. The same law would see Teer himself doomed for the magical powers now awakening within him. He has followed Kard to a strange shaman who promises to train him—but when a monster turns on and slaughters an entire hunting party, Teer and Kard take up the hunt to protect friend and foe alike. Their hunt follows the monster to the edge of the Unity, where the Spehari lords have sent an entire regiment to bring the monster down. But teeth and claws are the least of the dangers the creature brings to bear—and the monster itself is only one of many dangers Teer and Kard face as they walk among enemies to protect the innocent…

    December 2023: “Elements” | FBOM Ep. 53

This month for our conversation on the use of elements and elemental powers in fantasy, we read Avatar: The Last Airbender – The Rise of Kyoshi by F.C. Yee. Here is a brief description of the book:

The Rise of Kyoshi follows Kyoshi in her early teens and her journey into becoming the Avatar. Before reading this book, it is so hard to imagine Kyoshi as a confused young girl – given that in ATLA, she was always projected as someone with solid resolve and sheer confidence in her choices.

November 2023: “Last Call” by Tim Powers | FBOM Ep. 52

This month for our conversation on airships, we read Last Call by Tim Powers. Here is a brief description of the book:

In Last Call, the Locus Fantasy Award and World Fantasy Award winner by Tim Powers, ex-professional gambler Scott Crane hasn't returned to Las Vegas, or held a hand of cards, in ten years. But nightmares about a strange poker game he once attended—a contest he believed he walked away from a big winner—are drawing him back to the magical city.. because the mythic game did not end that night in 1969. And the price of his winnings was his soul.

October 2023: “Leviathan” by Scott Westerfeld | FBOM Ep. 51

October 2023: “Leviathan” by Scott Westerfeld | FBOM Ep. 51

This month for our conversation on airships, we read Leviathan by Scott Westerfeld. Here is a brief description of the book:

It is the cusp of World War I. The Austro-Hungarians and Germans have their Clankers, steam-driven iron machines loaded with guns and ammunition. The British Darwinists employ genetically fabricated animals as their weaponry. Their Leviathan is a whale airship, and the most masterful beast in the British fleet. Aleksandar Ferdinand, a Clanker, and Deryn Sharp, a Darwinist, are on opposite sides of the war. But their paths cross in the most unexpected way, taking them both aboard the Leviathan on a fantastical, around-the-world adventure….One that will change both their lives forever.

Great Podcast, have a listen

I really love listening to this podcast. You get hear some great book recommendations, some great interviews and the hosts are very laid-back. When they have discussions it is like friends having a conversation or people talking about what they read/watch at a party.

So much potential but leaves me angry more often than not

They often decide a theme or genre for everyone to read which seems normal but they don’t define the theme or genre. They then pick and read books for the next episode and because they didn’t define the terms of the reading assignment they spend half of every episode Ummm Actually-ing each other about why some books really don’t fit into the genre or defining the terms of the assignment which is what they should do before they read.

Basically they need to decide if they are a serious book podcast or just a bunch of friends talking about books.
