In Fairfield, Richard, Kahlan, and D watch from the shadows as a massive candlelit rally quickly turns into a highly scripted propaganda show. Coached kids are put on stage to paint Richard as a monster, and a speaker named Privet drags his name through the mud with some wild personal attacks about his "boundless lust" and secret pregnant wives. But before the crowd can get any rowdier, things go from bad to worse when the terrifying magic of the Chimes strikes, setting people ablaze in the middle of the square. A sudden downpour puts out thousands of candles, but it can't extinguish the unnatural fire burning the victims. With the panicked mob blaming Richard for the horror, the group is forced to make a run for their horses—leaving Richard more determined than ever to break into the library and stop this magical mess once and for all.
