In short, Memorial is a Gospel-Centered Church that believes Jesus is everything and through faith/belief/trust in Jesus we pursue following Him together as one family. We believe that God places His people together in the context of a local body of believers (His church), not by accident, but for the Spirit-empowered purpose of glorifying Him through repenting and believing the Gospel of His son, Jesus Christ. Through His church we see His kingdom come and His will being done as He makes all creation right and new. In all we do we seek to worship the Lord passionately, connect with each other authentically, grow to know the Lord deeply, and go and share the gospel boldly as One Body in Christ.

The Weight of a Word: Truth, Justice, and the Ninth Commandment | Exodus 20:16

Don't lie. That's how we've summarized it. But that weakens the depth of it. The ninth commandment wasn't written for polite conversation. It was written for the city gate - the ancient courtroom where elders weighed witnesses, established truth, and handed down verdicts. And bearing false witness in that context wasn't just dishonesty. It was violence. Proverbs 25:18 says it plainly: a false witness is like a war club, a sword, or a sharp arrow. In this message, Pastor Jimmy walks through what bearing false witness actually means - legal testimony, what we say about others, what we say about ourselves, rumors, gossip - and what it does to image bearers of God. He lands on the most haunting inversion in the Gospels: when Jesus stood at His own city gate, it was a Roman pagan who sought the truth while the religious leaders manipulated the witnesses. In this message: Why the ninth commandment is about justice, not just honesty How false witness damages image bearers - reputations, relationships, and bodies The COVID study that revealed how gossip and rumors are a form of violence The difference between brutal honesty and speaking truth in love How Jesus responded to false accusations - and what He did with ours Key Scriptures: Exodus 20:16; 23:1–8 • Deuteronomy 19:15–21 • Proverbs 25:18 • Mark 14:55–15:15 • Ephesians 4:15 🙌 Join us Sundays @ 9:15 AM 1120 Madison St., Jefferson City, MO 🌐 https://memorialchurch.net 📩 getconnected@memorialchurch.net 💬 https://www.facebook.com/memorialchurchjc 🎧 Listen on the go: Podbean: https://memorialchurchjc.podbean.com/ Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/memorial-baptist-church-jefferson-city/id1478157245 Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/5CuIDzWry5Y2oz8TBHOKoH YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@memorialbaptist9681

Open Hands: Scarcity, Stealing, and the Generous God | Exodus 20:15

Do not steal. Simple enough, right? But the biblical definition of stealing goes further than most of us want to admit — taking without consent, yes, but also defrauding, deceiving, and withholding what is rightfully owed. And underneath all of it is the same mentality: there isn't enough, so I better take what I can get. In this message, Eric walks through the eighth commandment and makes the case that this is really a generosity sermon. He traces the scarcity mentality from COVID toilet paper shelves to the Malachi storehouse, from the farmer's market scale to Abraham on the mountain — and lands on the only thing that actually transforms takers into givers: the gospel. In this message: What stealing actually means — legally and biblically How taking from your neighbor diminishes them — and connects to contempt The scarcity mentality vs. our generous God who has cattle on a thousand hills Why God asked for tithes — and what Nehemiah 12 says about where it actually went The rich young man and the open hands Jesus asks for Key Scriptures: Exodus 20:15 • Leviticus 19 • Malachi 3:6–12 • Genesis 22 • 2 Corinthians 8:9 • Matthew 19:16–22 • Philippians 2 • Proverbs 11:1 🙌 Join us Sundays @ 9:15 AM 1120 Madison St., Jefferson City, MO 🌐 https://memorialchurch.net 📩 getconnected@memorialchurch.net 💬 https://www.facebook.com/memorialchurchjc 🎧 Listen on the go: Podbean: https://memorialchurchjc.podbean.com/ Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/memorial-baptist-church-jefferson-city/id1478157245 Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/5CuIDzWry5Y2oz8TBHOKoH YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@memorialbaptist9681

Steadfast Love: What the Seventh Commandment Is Really Protecting | Exodus 20:14

Two Hebrew words. "You shall not commit adultery." But God isn't merely guarding sexual behavior. He is guarding a covenant union He designed to tell the truth about Himself. In this message, Pastor David traces four movements through the seventh commandment — the boundary God protects, the blessing He reveals, the covenant He keeps, and the love He sends. From Genesis 1's picture of one-and-many, to ezer kenegdo (the woman as strong ally, not assistant), to Hosea and Gomer, to Jesus on the Sermon on the Mount exposing the lust that takes without asking — and finally to the cross, where the faithful God kept covenant with unfaithful people. This is not just a sermon for married people. It is a call for everyone to be covenant-guarding people. In this message: Why God guards this boundary so fiercely — it's His self-portrait Ezer kenegdo — what the woman's role in Genesis 2 actually means The Hosea/Gomer thread and why Scripture uses adultery language for Israel's unfaithfulness Jesus on lust: not a glance, but a sustained stare with intent — the same pattern as Eden How Christ's blood establishes the new covenant for covenant-breakers Key Scriptures: Exodus 20:14 • Genesis 1:26–28; 2:18, 23–24 • Deuteronomy 7:7–9 • Hosea 1–3 • Matthew 5:27–28; 26:28 • Romans 5:8 • Ephesians 1; 5:25, 31–32 • 1 John 4:19 🙌 Join us Sundays @ 9:15 AM 1120 Madison St., Jefferson City, MO 🌐 https://memorialchurch.net 📩 getconnected@memorialchurch.net 💬 https://www.facebook.com/memorialchurchjc 🎧 Listen on the go: Podbean: https://memorialchurchjc.podbean.com/ Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/memorial-baptist-church-jefferson-city/id1478157245 Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/5CuIDzWry5Y2oz8TBHOKoH YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@memorialbaptist9681

The Fire We Keep: Anger, Idols, and the Life Jesus Gives | Exodus 20:13 Part 2

Last week: contempt, two paths, a better word. This week: Jesus goes deeper. He's not after the spark of anger. He's after the fire we keep. In Matthew 5, Jesus connects lingering anger to murder - and then uses a word nobody expected: Gehenna. Not a metaphor. A real valley south of Jerusalem where the kings of Judah once burned their children alive. A valley so defiled that by Jesus' day it had become the Jewish word for final judgment. And He puts contempt on that continuum. In this message, Pastor David follows three movements - anger reveals what we worship, idols always demand life, and Jesus does the opposite. He traces it from Cain to Gehenna to the cross, addresses abortion with pastoral care and biblical conviction, and closes with the only question that matters: which path will you hand down? In this message: Why Jesus targets "remaining anger" - nursing a grudge, not a momentary flare The history of Gehenna - and what it reveals about idols and human worth Why idols always demand life - and what a culture looks like when it decides who counts A pastoral, biblical conversation about abortion and the Church's historic response Three closing practices: receive life, protect life, give life Key Scriptures: Exodus 20:13; 34:6–7 • Matthew 5:21–22 • James 1:19–20 • Romans 12:19; 6:23 • Jeremiah 19:4–5 • Psalm 115:8; 139:13–16 • 1 John 3:15–16 • John 7:37–39; 14:6 🙌 Join us Sundays @ 9:15 AM 1120 Madison St., Jefferson City, MO 🌐 https://memorialchurch.net 📩 getconnected@memorialchurch.net 💬 https://www.facebook.com/memorialchurchjc 🎧 Listen on the go: Podbean: https://memorialchurchjc.podbean.com/ Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/memorial-baptist-church-jefferson-city/id1478157245 Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/5CuIDzWry5Y2oz8TBHOKoH YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@memorialbaptist9681

Two Paths and a Better Word: The Sixth Commandment | Exodus 20:13

You shall not murder. Easy enough, right? But Jesus doesn't stop at the act. He goes upstream - to the anger, the insult, the quiet contempt. And He stacks them, not because they're three levels of a grading system, but because they all come from the same root. There's an English word for that root: contempt. Taking the judge's seat over another image bearer and declaring them worthless - with your hands, your words, or just your silence. In this message, Pastor David traces three verdicts across the whole Bible - God's verdict, our verdict, and Christ's verdict - and shows that while Abel's blood cried out against Cain, Jesus' blood speaks a better word. In this message: The Hebrew rāṣaḥ - why "murder" is broader than premeditated killing The two paths of Genesis: Cain's line and Seth's line, and where each one ends What Dallas Willard says about contempt - and why it's more dangerous than anger Matthew 5:21–24 - Jesus exposes the upstream root of murder in every heart Three practices for followers of Jesus: get out of the judge's seat, see the image, move toward Key Scriptures: Exodus 20:13 • Genesis 1:26–27; 4:5–10; 9:5–6 • Matthew 5:21–24, 43–45; 11:28–30; 22:37–40; 26:28 • 1 John 3:15 • Romans 2:1; 8:1; 10:9–10 • Hebrews 12:24 • Ephesians 1:7 • John 3:16–18; 14:6; 20:31 🙌 Join us Sundays @ 9:15 AM 1120 Madison St., Jefferson City, MO 🌐 https://memorialchurch.net 📩 getconnected@memorialchurch.net 💬 https://www.facebook.com/memorialchurchjc 🎧 Listen on the go: Podbean: https://memorialchurchjc.podbean.com/ Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/memorial-baptist-church-jefferson-city/id1478157245 Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/5CuIDzWry5Y2oz8TBHOKoH YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@memorialbaptist9681

The Weight of Honor: Kavod, Parents, and the Fifth Commandment | Exodus 20:12

We hear "honor" and think respect. But the Hebrew word is kavod — something that is weighted, heaped upon, heavy with significance. That changes the whole commandment. The fifth word is the hinge of the entire ten. The first four go up- how you relate to God. The last five go out -how you treat people. And right in the middle, bridging both directions, is this: honor your father and mother. In this message, Pastor Nathan walks through what kavod actually means, why this is the only commandment that comes with a promise, how Jesus confronted the Pharisees' clever loophole around it, and what it means to honor a parent who wasn't honorable. Honest, theologically rich, and pastorally careful. In this message: The Hebrew kavod and what "honor" really means beyond respect Why scholars call this the hinge between loving God and loving people The Corban loophole Jesus exposes in Matthew 15 — and what it reveals about financial responsibility Why Romans 13 and Titus 2 expand this command to all authority — and what that demands of leaders What honoring a parent looks like when they weren't honorable to you Key Scriptures: Exodus 20:12 • Ephesians 6:1–4 • Matthew 15:1–9 • Romans 13:1–7 • Titus 2:1–8 • Proverbs 4 • Philippians 2:3 🙌 Join us Sundays @ 9:15 AM 1120 Madison St., Jefferson City, MO 🌐 https://memorialchurch.net 📩 getconnected@memorialchurch.net 💬 https://www.facebook.com/memorialchurchjc 🎧 Listen on the go: Podbean: https://memorialchurchjc.podbean.com/ Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/memorial-baptist-church-jefferson-city/id1478157245 Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/5CuIDzWry5Y2oz8TBHOKoH YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@memorialbaptist9681
