The Golden City

Walter Thompson

The Golden City is a podcast about San Francisco’s past, present, and possible futures. Host Walter Thompson brings a journalist’s eye and a longtime resident’s perspective to stories that don’t fit neatly into headlines: neighborhood culture, quiet shifts in the city’s identity, and questioning conventional wisdom about what it’s like to live in one of the world’s most iconic places. No hot takes or nostalgia pieces. Just close-up observations about what it actually feels like to be here.

    My Neighbor Doesn't Pay Rent

One of my neighbors is unhoused. We don’t interact, and we’re not in conflict. But after a recent disruption in my own life, I’ve been thinking about what it means to maintain a place in San Francisco, and what it feels like to see someone living adjacent to the systems that define my life. This is an attempt to understand that tension (without resolving it). ********* I wanted some music for this episode, so I used Google Gemini to create the two pieces you heard. It’s the only part of the show where I used generative AI. Here are the prompts I used: Track 1 Create a new instrumental track in 6/9 time that blends synth-pop and industrial-influenced robot pop. I want it to sound like something from the early 1970s German experimental krautrock scene, which popularized the use of synthesizers, vocoders, and drum machines to create a minimal, rhythmic, and futuristic sound. Track 2 No vocals, no lyrics, just something quiet and contemplative that would be appropriate for a noir thriller set in 1970 North Beach San Francisco. The music should evoke stripped down west coast jazz and must not be in a 3/4 or 4/4 time signature, so please use 5/4 or 9/8 or 6/4 time. This track should have a hollow-body electric guitar as the main instrument. Brooding, contemplative, something that would suggest mystery on fog-bound streets in the wee hours. ********* If you’re a musician or composer who lives in San Francisco, let’s talk.
