    KFR 163X: Sword of the Stranger - A hidden Samurai gem

    Many samurai movies have kind of come and gone in Japanese cinema – both in live action and animated varieties. And while some leave a lasting impression on Nippon’s cinematic industry, others are forgotten - not because they are bad - but often due to simple things such as bad release windows, limited advertising budget or extremely limited availability after release. This week’s episode is all about one of the later – a cinematic, action packed, animated samurai film, set in the gritty Sengoku period, with a dash of China’s Wuxia storytelling thrown on top of beautiful, hand-crafted animation at Studio Bones. Does Sword of the Stranger of tread a new path compared to other Samurai tales? No – but it truly does not need to. If you love samurai tales like the gritty remake of Dororo or even the bombastic Samurai Champloon, this is 2 hours you’ll be glad you spent watching this amazing film.     KFR 162: Is K-On still good in 2026? Criterion think so!

    The Criterion Collection just added the K-ON movie to their catalogue, cementing it as a classic anime film for the ages. That said, they only have 5 anime titles in the collection, so we’ll take it with a grain of salt lol. However, it’s a great excuse for us to revisit an iconic Cute Girls Doing Cute Things (CGDCT) anime from the early 2000’s! So, does K-On hold up to current audience expectations? Or does its meandering, slice of life pacing made it harder for current audiences to enjoy?   Join us as we share our thoughts, dig into the series history and explain why the series ended despite its huge popularity. Also, BIG apologies on the delayed recording and release - illnesses, travel for work and scheduling conflicts made this episode a real struggle to get out.     KFR 157: Penguin Highway is a bit naff...

    Penguins showing up in a Japanese town miles away from any ocean, coupled with other strange occurrences? Sounds like a compelling idea for a film, and the artwork looks amazing! But temper your expectations - Penguin Highway is unfortunately not a great example of Japanese storytelling, with logic frequently thrown to the wind and a heap of forgotten and unexplained plot points. So is it worth a watch? Guess you better listen to the episode! In general news, we're back on schedule with the brand refresh now mostly complete. However, this has resulted in Kyle making poor choices on what we watch two times in a row! If he messes up the episode after white day, he may have his weeb card confiscated lol VIDEOS!
