The Apostles' Creed - The Forgiveness of Sins

In this message from our Apostles’ Creed series, we focus on the powerful declaration, “I believe in the forgiveness of sins.” To understand how incredible that statement truly is, we first have to understand the seriousness of sin. Sin is more than simply doing things God tells us not to do; at its root, sin is our rejection of God’s rightful rule and our failure to treasure the Creator above His creation. Scripture describes the devastating effects of sin in many ways: we were dead, enslaved, lost, blind, guilty, alienated from God, and completely unable to rescue ourselves. Yet this is exactly where the Good News of Jesus Christ becomes so glorious. God did not leave us in the condition our sin created. While we were still sinners and enemies of God, Christ died for us, bearing our sin and judgment upon the cross and doing for us what we could never do for ourselves. Through faith in Jesus, our debt has been canceled, our guilt removed, we have been justified and reconciled to God, made alive by the Holy Spirit, and given the hope of everlasting life. The forgiveness of sins is not merely God erasing a list of bad things we have done—it is God rescuing us from sin and completely restoring us to Himself. When we declare, “I believe in the forgiveness of sins,” we are declaring our faith in the Gospel message of Jesus Christ - Romans 5:8-10 "8 But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us. 9 Since we have now been justified by his blood, how much more shall we be saved from God’s wrath through him! 10 For if, while we were God’s enemies, we were reconciled to him through the death of his Son, how much more, having been reconciled, shall we be saved through his life!"
