    BienVenue | Threes for Thursday | Pitchfork’s Rating Guide

    The Red Nots played a show at the historic Paradise Rock Club in Boston last week. The 933 capacity theater is now a Live Nation venue and it’s hosted some major acts over its 48 years in operation. Greg also has a Three for Thursday this week. Songs: Pat Metheny - Phase Dance Live '78 Karnivool - Aozora Meat Puppets - Backwater Now that Pitchfork is now allowing monthly subscribers to contribute their own ratings for albums, they’ve decided to pull back the curtain on the criteria for their 0-10 scoring system. Jay thought it’d be a fun to review the guide and then rate some classic albums to compare our scores to Pitchfork.  Song: Mclusky - “i know computer” Nick closes us out with another Three For Thursday. Having spent most of the day listening to Apple’s Discovery station, he also has some additional theories on how songs are selected.     News with Nick | Bangers & Mashups | Tag The Track

    We kick off with News with Nick. After celebrating the careers of Greg Brown, founder & guitarist of Cake, and Brad Arnold, singer of 3 Doors Down, Nick runs through the music of the Super LX.  Song: Tigran Hamasyan - “War Time Poem” We get a new round of DJ Cummerbund on Greg’s semi-annual Bangers & Mashups. Check out his channel over on YouTube, the guy is a mashup guru. Songs:  DJ Cummerbund - “Superyea Shuffle” DJ Cummerbund - “Jereloose” DJ Cummerbund - “Last Resorts” Finally, upon further tweaking, Jay has landed on a new formula for “Tag the Track.” In this iteration, Nick & Greg take turns and have to identify a song after listening to 1 second of its hook.  Song: Cake - “Short Skirt, Long Jacket”

    Building Guitar Pedals from Scratch | News with Nick

    Here’s the deal. This week Greg is traveling for a show, meanwhile both Jay & Nick are sick.  Did they cancel the show this week? Clearly, they did not. Did Jay & Nick deliver a show with audible head colds? Yes, they do. Is GregBot 3000 along for the ride? Without hesitation, absolutely! Jay’s been building guitar pedals from scratch lately and he shares his journey with us. Warning, this is deemed a NERD ALERT as an afterthought. That being said, this is very cool hobby and there’s something magical that happens when you discover how something actually works. Song: corto.alto - “Squonk” Nick brings us up to speed on his son, and guest of the show, Charlie’s journey with the drums.     News with Nick | Threes For Thursday

    We kick things off this week with a News with Nick. Pitchfork puts up a paywall, Bandcamp bans AI, and rock music gets the ‘most improved’ award for music streaming in 2025. We get another round of “There I Ruined It,” some Kurt Rosenwinkel magic, and Vulfpeck returns to the stage at Madison Square Garden.     Jay celebrates the life of Bob Weir. Known as the “other one” in the Grateful Dead, Weir had an incredibly unique approach to the guitar. We listen to some tracks and Jay tells us his story.     To celebrate the 35th anniversary of Blood Sugar Sex Magik, the Red Not Chili Peppers are performing the album in its entirety on select tour dates this year. In further celebration of the diamond album, Greg has a new round of Viral or Eyeroll. Song: Wayne Shorter- “Black Nile” Jay has a melange of topics to bring this week in Jay’s Jambalaya. Peter Gabriel has another new album coming out, the Corporation for Public Broadcasting has dissolved, and Phish’s New Years Show was amazing. Song: Peter Gabriel - “Been Undone (Dark-Side Remix)” Finally, it’s News with Nick! Drake is accused of RICO gambling and a stream-boosting scheme, Steven Drozd is out of the Flaming Lips, and YouTube stops sending its streaming data to Billboard.     Best Albums of 2025

    Happy New Year! We’re back to share our favorite albums of 2025! We have a collective pick and it shouldn’t come as a surprise. Getting Killed by Geese has made most of lists and we concur. Song: Geese - “Au pays du cocaine” Grabbing the number 2 spot on Jay & Nick’s list was Everything Must Go by Goose. It still does nothing for Greg. His number two pick was Never Enough by Turnstile. Song: Goose - “Give It Time” Jay’s third pick was Sam Fender’s People Watching, Nick chose MEGAGONG by DOOM GONG, and Greg chose Private Music by Deftones. Songs: Sam Fender - “People Watching” DOOM GONG -  "Never Crossed My Mind" Then Greg remembers the late Brigitte Bardot and tells us about his Christmas night listening to Coltrane’s last recorded performance. Songs: Serge Gainsbourg - “Bonnie & Clyde” John Coltrane - “My Favorite Things (The Olatunji Concert)”
