    The Tragedy of 'Macbeth'

    This week we are excited to welcome 2 experts to discuss their views on Shakespeare’s Macbeth. Professor Louis Petrich, a professional Shakespearean actor and a Great Books tutor at St. John’s College, discusses the ubiquitous “doubleness” in Macbeth and recreates the troubled tragic hero by the end of the play with his magnificent reading of the famous “tomorrow, and tomorrow, and tomorrow” soliloquy. Next, Nick Utzig, a Harvard English PhD student who focuses on the study of war and militarism in Shakespeare, talks about how his own experience in the army has shaped his reading of Shakespeare. Professor of Political Philosophy Steven Smith at Yale University joins us to describe the political importance of the dramatic moment of the trial of Socrates. Next, Katja Vogt, Professor of Philosophy at Columbia, talks about her understanding of Socrates’ famous quote: “I know that I know nothing.” Finally, Alexander Nehamas, Professor of Philosophy at Princeton, discusses what true Socratic irony and dialectic are.
