Soul Survivor festivals: what if you were a kid in the crowd? | UCB 1 Life Issues

Content warning: References to claims of misconduct, which include emotional, spiritual and physical abuse.Soul Survivor festivals in the UK attracted thousands of young people during the nineties and noughties. What is it like to be an adult today looking back to when you were a kid in the crowd? How do you reflect on those experiences after both a Church of England review and an independent report commissioned by trustees of Soul Survivor substantiated claims of misconduct by its founder Mike Pilavachi? In this Life Issues episode, Vicky Gibbens is joined by Dr Lucy Sixsmith, a Cambridge academic who attended those youth festivals as a teenager. She has been considering the ongoing influence of them in adulthood and the personal questions about her faith which have been prompted by this scandal. Her book is called ‘When the music fades: power, surrender and the Soul Survivor generation’. The manosphere: challenging views and behaviour

There are many ideologies and differing opinions in society placing expectations on young boys of what it means to be a man. Whether that's defined as "toxic masculinity," by some, or shaped by their upbringing, environment, experience and how their culture expects them to carry out their role, it can be a confusing world to grow up in with so many competing views - even in church circles. And more recently they are bombarded by controversial social media influencers in the so called 'Manosphere.' But what does it mean to be a man in today's society according to the Bible? In this week's edition of Life Issues, Dave Newton from Scripture Union joined Rob Westall to discuss - The manosphere: challenging views and behaviour.

Where is God in the Suffering?

(Please note this episode was recorded back in 2020) We have changed our scheduled Life Issues for this week to respond to the tragedy at Big Church Festival. A pastor died and six others were injured by a falling sign at the festival last Friday. We continue to pray for all who are grieving at this time and processing what happened with the event being cancelled. We wanted to share a conversation which might be helpful and which speaks to some of the questions we have seen people posting on social media. Back in 2020, Vicky Gibbens spoke to author, theologian, and speaker Dr Amy Orr-Ewing when she released a book ‘Where is God in All the Suffering?’. She believes questions and doubts are not dangers to be avoided or suppressed, but can be companions on a journey towards a relationship with God, and a genuine exploration of faith. AI music: the impact on artists and worshippers

Artificial intelligence has been around for many years, but only recently have we sped up how it's developing and the many ways we are adopting it as a society. Some church leaders are using it to help when constructing sermons, or even allowing AI apps to write them altogether! What about its potential impact on music and how we also worship?
