Missions FocusUPG FOCUS: The Sok in LaosThe Sok people of southern Laos number about 2,900, with virtually no known evangelical believers. Living in remote forested communities, they rely on subsistence farming, hunting, and gathering, while following traditional ethnic religions centered on appeasing spirits believed to influence every aspect of life. Although portions of Scripture are available, there are few ministry resources and little gospel access in their own language. Pray that the Sok would encounter the hope of Jesus Christ, that workers would faithfully bring the gospel in their heart language, and that a thriving community of disciples would take root among them. One reason Jesus doesn’t permit the demons to speak (v.34) is because He wants accurate representation. What are some examples of false representations of Jesus that we experience today? How would you respond to someone who blames Jesus for what some of His “followers” might do? 3. In vv.35-39, we learn Jesus has different priorities than His disciples. They seem to be excited about the crowds and the spectacle, while Jesus has a more humble agenda. Why do you think the disciples would be excited about the crowds? What are some ways we can have this same mentality as the disciples? What are some examples of ways we can embrace the humble priorities of Jesus? 4. Another reason for the messianic secret is Jesus has a greater purpose. He knows He can’t be fully understood apart from the cross. Why do we often want the healing and glory without the cross?
