    King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard - Changes (7th ANNIVERSARY SHOW!!!)

    Every anniversary for the last 6 years, we've done some sort of gimmick for our anniversary while discussing a king gizzard record. We've Infested the Rat's Nest and Flown with the Microtonal Banana... We've witnessed the Altered Beast in his true form and survived the Murder of the Universe... We've traveled through Timeland... worn out our Laminated Denim... and even traversed the old west with Eyes Like the Sky... but THIS YEAR... we're just going to relax.     Johnny Cash - Bitter Tears: Ballads of the American Indian

    All roads lead here. We've covered 3 Johnny Cash albums so far, 2 of which were in this trilogy of episodes (as well as some not so tame references in other episodes). We have one more Johnny Cash deep dive to get to, but before we get to his American Series, we have to get to his original "controversial" album about the Native Americans. Bitter Tears was released to mixed reviews in 1964, with sales for the album following his previous album trends, but without the airplay he was used to getting. This is the man the wrote "Ring of Fire"!! Cash had sang about Native American issues before, but this time it had a sense of urgency since it was calling out the then CURRENT displacement of the Seneca people. Between 1960 and 1964, Congress and JFK's administration determined that they be moved from the land promised to them by George Washington (in one of our oldest treaties)--in order to make way for a dam... A dam which eventually caused flooding and damage to their NEW homes as well. It was a true tragedy happening right in front of America's eyes and, as usual, they didn't want to acknowledge it. Although the album didn't get the play at the time it deserved, it has become recognized as one of his best works.     Pink Floyd - The Final Cut (w/ Adeyemi AKA Santine!!!)

    We are taking a break from our trip backwards through Pink Floyd's discography to put one last nail into The Wall... The Final Cut is one of the most divisive albums in rock history; and one of the most intriguing... It's an anti-war concept album using the leftover bricks from The Wall to bring attention to the war that Britain had just waged to keep control of their colony in The Falkland Islands. Roger Waters felt that by not finding a peaceful alternative, Britain was spitting on the legacy of the soldiers that died to defend peace and freedom, including his own dad. It's also a pointed criticism of the cold war era and the various land grabs that plagued it, by colonial powers unwilling to let go of the colonial age. On it's own, it's an incredible anti-war album that continues to be relevant any time authoritarianism rears it's head, like now with the rise of fascism in America and the Genocide of Gazan Palestinians. In the context of Pink Floyd and Waters' mental health, however, the album shows how difficult it can be to come to terms with your own trauma without pushing everyone you love away. Both in the context of The Wall and The Final Cut, Rogers is taking on the crushing weight of his own trauma and the dystopian cycle of violence that keeps making albums like this relevant.
