Nice Try!: With Breadth Comes Depth (ft. Avery Trufelman.)

For connoisseurs of podcasts Avery Trufelman shouldn’t need much of an introduction. She’s worked on popular shows like 99% Invisible and it’s successful spinoff, Articles of Interest. More recently she teamed up with Vox and Curbed to create Nice Try!

In season one of this investigative series, Avery explored failed attempts at creating Utopias. For season two titled Interior she turned her attention to the home. Each episode dissects the history and the stories of household appliances and the role they play in our attempt to turn our homes into our own little fiefdoms.

She joined Evo to discuss the making of Season 2 Episode 1 titled The Doorbell. Sow how does someone make an entire episode about a doorbell? Well, with breadth comes depth.

How to Start a War: Leveraging a Medium (Ft. Michael Trapani.)

How to Start a War: Leveraging a Medium (Ft. Michael Trapani.)

It took Michael Trapani six years to make How to Start a War. From meticulous research, immersive sound design, impeccable narration and poignant story writing, Michael masterfully leveraged the audio medium for this series.

How to Start a War is a podcast about WW2. Most of us know how that story ended and that the Nazis lost. But the details of how it started, like the granular details, the conversations, the lies, betrayals…those aren’t as well known.

Michael recreates this story from the point of view from the Nazis (with the clear stipulation that they are on the shortlist for the worst people who ever lived.) Using transcripts he re-enacts conversations. With sound design he creates atmosphere. And with narration, he guides us through a complex story that as it turns out, is quite poignant in our current time.

Storybound: Going Against the Norm (ft. Jude Brewer)

Storybound: Going Against the Norm (ft. Jude Brewer)

Radio theatre is defined as a dramatized performance — no visual, only dialogue and sounds to manifest images in the listeners’ minds, resulting in a uniquely psychological experience. This mode of storytelling began in the 1920s, flourishing by the 1940s, then evolving in the 21st century in the form of podcasts. And while Jude Brewer’s podcast Storybound falls into the category of radio theatre, it doesn’t quite sound like the rest of them.
Inside today’s episode, Jay and Jude discuss the collaboration between voice and music. Over the past four seasons, Storybound listeners have been treated to their favorite authors reading some of their most powerful writing, designed with immersive sound environments and experimental cross-genre music compositions handcrafted and arranged by creator and host Jude Brewer.
Jude is a writer, actor, and musician. He’s also the editor and sound designer for his own show Storybound. Most recently, Jude won First Place in the KCRW Radio Race, for which his piece “BUZZY” received critical acclaim. His weekly newsletter, How Long Must I Belong To This? is currently being developed into a show.

2 Pages with MBS: Ideas vs. "the personal" (ft. Michael Bungay Stanier)

Premise is everything when it comes to shaping a strong show. It allows the audience to understand immediately where they’re headed, which brings us to 2 Pages with MBS, a podcast where brilliant people read the best two pages of a favorite book…a book that has shaped them and changed them. Host Michael Bungay Stanier chats with authors, leaders, activists, academics, entrepreneurs, change agents, and celebrities as they dig into the ideas that matter the most.

Inside today’s episode, as timely as ever, Jay and MBS discuss tackling interviews from unconventional angles, challenging their guests to speak from the heart, and how to get straight to “the personal” as well as captivating ideas.

MBS has written books that have sold about a million copies all told, including The Coaching Habit, a self-published book that’s become the best-selling book on coaching this century. He founded a training and development company, Box of Crayons, that has taught coaching skills to hundreds of thousands of people around the world. And he’s been been named #1 Thought Leader in Coaching and a Coaching Guru.

Freelance Writing Coach: Selling Your Time (ft. Kaleigh Moore)

Freelance Writing Coach: Selling Your Time (ft. Kaleigh Moore)

Sometimes less is more. Especially when the crux of your podcast is sharing something practical, like freelance writing. That’s exactly what Kaleigh Moore and Emma Siemasko do with their podcast, Freelance Writing Coach. It’s a simple, conversational show that features Emma and Kaleigh chatting about different aspects of freelance writing. Episodes are usually short and simply (but well) produced, making for a quick, easy and practical listening experience. In this episode Jay chats with one half of the duo, Kaleigh about selling your time, writing and making a podcast about writing.

My favorite podcast

I am a podcast producer for an education company, and this is my go-to show for all things podcast. Jay is a great host, and the production value is very high. Does Cherie really produce this all this by herself! Wow. She’s a marvel, and I loved the episode that featured her. Kudos to Cherie and Jay and Castos for the autonomy they seem to grant the show. It doesn’t sound like a long commercial and that’s to their credit.

Authentic, Empowering and Amazingly Practical

It’s obvious Jay puts extraordinary effort into every single 3 Clips episode. But what resonates with me most is that he finds guests that are authentic and truly care about being a positive force in this world. The insights they collectively bring to bear are honestly mind-blowing Every. Single. Time.

No matter the episode, you’re guaranteed to walk away with a handful of golden nuggets - can’t recommend this show enough 🙌

Glad to have found this show...today!

Super looking forward to diving in for more episodes as I just listened to the story of how 3 Clips got acquired on their newest episode. Such an honest, real, and generous story/convo for me to hear as a new podcaster myself. To constantly focus on content and loyal fans/listeners, not just millions of downloads and to always be growing. Jay talking about how “it is about who stays, not who arrives.” I love it. That is “enough” for me to say...I’m in! Can’t wait to hear more. Thanks Jay and the whole team.
