A Regency Era Sapphic Schoolteacher Scandal

In the Regency Era, reputation was all many working-class women had. When Edinburgh schoolteachers Marianne Woods and Jane Pirie were accused of sapphic behaviour by their student Jane Cumming, they lost everything. So they decided to sue their accuser's wealthy grandmother for libel. The legal case, Pirie and Woods vs Cumming Gordon, only fanned the flames of the scandal. This week, our guest Indigo Dunphy-Smith walks us through the racism, classism, and homophobia that turned these rumours into a well-known scandal. As a historian I’m biased to being addicted to history podcasts, but this is truly a podcast anyone can get hooked on. I recommend it to all my friends! It has everything: history (duh), comedy, approachability, AND a fantastic host. What else could someone look for in a podcast? If you want to learn about women in history (PLUS queer folks from history) and switch up how you’ve come to understand history from a man’s perspective then you’ve come to the right place. Well-researched and well-delivered this podcast has all the vibes. If you’re new and looking for a place to start (other than the very beginning of course) I always recommend the Internationale season, it has some of my favs!!

I really wanted to like this podcast but there was far too much “like”, “basically”, “I think”, “I believe” without enough references for the statements. Stuff You Missed in History Class is a so much better show for actual history with references.

I was a history major; 3.94 GPA at the end of my college career; Olivet College 2007–teaching degree. I know how to research. I know how to write. I wish this podcast had been around during my college years! This woman completely understands her subjects and makes them current. I know many of these topics inside out and backward, but using trends and current language to bring everyone to life is brilliant. (I did this, too, during my teaching era.) I am thoroughly impressed by the quality of research and thought that this woman puts into each episode.
