    Episode 36 | Winner's Mindset | LJ Cryer

    If you’re a fan of basketball, you should be a fan of LJ Cryer. A hard nosed kid from New Orleans who relocated to Texas after Hurricane Katrina. Undersized but highly talented, LJ overachieved and won wherever he went. In three seasons at Baylor, he was part of a championship team his freshman year, while finding his place among a stacked group of guards. He then transferred to Houston and put in two seasons for Kelvin Sampson, willing his Cougars to an NCAA championship appearance.  Now entering life as a pro, it will be that winning mindset that propels LJ at the next level. When Penny looks at LJ he sees a fearless player who learns, listens and leads. Putting work in with Penny this summer, LJ has not only built on his skillset but also his confidence.     Episode 34 | Coach's Coach | Kelvin Sampson

    By all accounts, Kelvin Sampson is a coach’s coach. Coming up he learned the game from his father (who was his high school coach), and where he also learned work ethic. He worked his way up from small school sidelines to running powerhouse programs. With 42 seasons, 3 Final Fours, twice the AP Coach of the Year and now in Houston, Coach Sampson has found a once prominent program and an opportunity to construct a team in his image. As he tells Penny, he’s learned a few things over the years, and the constant has been doing things with a clear vision. Two of the key building blocks of any program are the coach’s philosophy and culture. For Coach Sampson he pushes his players to be accountable and prepare as hard as possible. And the results are not only wins but a dominant brand of basketball.     Episode 32 | Ready to Shine | Quentin Grimes

    There are certain players who, in their own way, continue to improve, overachieve and ultimately succeed. Quentin Grimes is absolutely one of those players. With four seasons under his belt, Q has established himself as a true pro. Whatever the team, whatever the situation, he stays ready, keeps the right mindset and impacts the game whenever he’s on the floor. In the offseason, Quentin has made yearly trips to workout with Penny, building on his skillset and fine tuning details. Dynamic on both the offensive and defensive ends, he’s built an identity of fitting in where needed. When in New York, he had to grind on the defensive side, in Dallas he had to pick his spots playing off of Luka and Kyrie. This past season in Philly, he came in and provided scoring when needed, stepped up as leader, then took the tough assignments night in and night out. As Penny sees it for Quentin, as long as he keeps stacking those days, his NBA star will shine soon enough. Between Penny and Cal, their knowledge and experience in the game of basketball is what bonds them.     Episode 31 | Born For Basketball | Nolan Smith

    You could say Nolan Smith was born for basketball. The son of Derek Smith, Nolan grew up around the NBA, and the game was a family thing. As a young player he was a phenom coming up in the DMV. A turning point moment upon losing his father, Nolan found a deeper purpose in his play. Landing at Duke, he was not only a standout player for Coach K, but a leader and a champion. With an NBA career that was cut short, Nolan found a natural calling as a coach. Instead of Durham, he’s now in Memphis, part of a program where he’s a key figure in building a winning culture and developing well rounded players. As Penny knew Nolan’s story, he saw the promise in him not only as a coach, but as motivator and as a man. When you get to know his love and dedication, it all makes sense. For Penny, he was a fan of Jamal (aka Dandy), watching him come up, with the style and joy with which he played the game.     Episode 29 | Savvy and Skilled | Antoine Walker

    When it comes to playing point forward, Antoine Walker can be listed among players who were the prototype for the position. Coming up in the rich history of Chicago players, he developed his signature style that blended size, shooting, ball handling and finishing. At Kentucky, Antoine was the top player on a historically great national championship squad. When Penny came across Antoine as a pro, he saw a savvy player who would take the league by force. From their days running at Hoops in Chicago in legendary summer runs, to showdowns in Boston and later meeting up in Miami, it was mutual love and respect. Looking back on Antoine’s career we not only think of him as dynamically talented, but a winner and the blueprint for the modern era game.     Episode 28 | Full Circle | Elliot Perry

A few years ahead of him, Elliot was a standout player who became a star in Memphis and then an 11 year pro. He and Penny attended the same high school at Treadwell, and then Memphis State and onto the league. For all of its rich basketball culture you can’t talk about Memphis without Elliot and Penny. As the story continues, they both have come full circle in their respective journeys and are back in Memphis writing the next chapter. Elliot aka “Socks” had the rare opportunity to play for his hometown team, and when he hung them up, he stayed working for the Grizzlies as the Director of Player Support.
