    Ep336 - All In: Take Up Your Cross

    Pastor Kent is continuing in our sermon series "All In" this week, as we consider what that means for Christians as we seek to be committed disciples of Jesus. Matthew 16:24 will be our anchor verse as we journey through this series. "It's just a cross I have to bear." Have you ever heard that phrase or even said it yourself, often related to a minor inconvenience? That's not what Jesus meant when he made it clear that anyone who follows him will have to take up their own cross. Following Jesus can often bring challenges, emotional and mental pain, or even physical pain or loss.     Pastor Kent is starting a new series this week, as we consider what it means to be "All In." Maybe you've heard that phrase before, and can relate it to the idea of being committed to something. But what does it mean for Christians as we seek to be committed as disciples of Jesus? Matthew 16:24 will be our anchor verse as we journey through this series. The world suggests that the idea of not receiving or even taking what we want in any situation somehow makes us a failure. But we likely all know that getting everything we think we deserve, isn't actually healthy, and doesn't lead us into a deeper relationship with Jesus. But a correct view of serving others or being a servant, is modelled by Jesus who would and ultimately did give everything for others.     There is so much hatred and anger in our world right now, with people viewing anyone who disagrees with them as the enemy to be attacked and silenced. Fear is at the root of so much of this: fear of losing control; fear of the unknown or unfamiliar; fear of letting go of our own best interests, to put other people first. As 1 John 4:18 reminds us, perfect love, God's love...drives out fear. And this love is so boldy on display for the world to see at Christmastime.
