Webinar #308 Dr Shivam Natarajan - Ethical issues in AI: The big picture

Recorded on 6 August 2026 for ICMDA Webinars. Peter Saunders chairs a webinar with Dr Shivam Natarajan Use of AI in healthcare is rapidly increasing and evolving day by day. While there are many beneficial uses of AI in healthcare, there are significant ethical issues and dilemmas we face in real life practice. This has caused a lot of scepticism and suspicion among healthcare workers especially if you are a Christian.  With a lack of clarity many reject the use of AI outright or actively refrain from its use. On the other hand there are users who embrace it without understanding the risks and issues. The purpose of this presentation is to give an overview of ethical issues in AI and provide a Christian framework to approach them.  Dr Shivam Natarajan is a senior healthcare transformation leader, clinician, and digital health strategist with more than 25 years of international experience across the NHS, Middle East, Europe, and global health technology sectors. He brings a unique combination of clinical expertise, executive leadership, healthcare consulting, and AI-enabled digital transformation experience, having worked across providers, governments, integrated care systems, and health technology organisations. Currently serving as Global Head of Healthcare and Lifesciences at Experion Technologies, he leads global healthcare strategy and innovation initiatives focused on AI, population health, digital platforms, and healthcare product engineering across the UK, Europe, Middle East, Australia, and the United States. Over the course of his career, Dr Natarajan has held senior leadership positions including Interim Chief Medical Information Officer at Dedalus Group, Chief of Healthcare Services at Ajlan Medical Sector in Saudi Arabia, Senior Advisor and Head of eHealth to the Ministry of Health in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, and senior transformation roles across major NHS organisations including Barts Health, Royal Free London, Imperial-linked systems, and Integrated Care Systems across England. To listen live to future ICMDA webinars visit https://icmda.net/resources/webinars/

Webinar #307 Prof Paul Rylance - Teaching whole-person care

Recorded on 30 July 2026 for ICMDA Webinars. Peter Saunders chairs a webinar with Prof Paul Rylance Treating a patient should not be just about the condition, but also their psychosocial and spiritual needs – Body, Mind and Spirit. All over the world healthcare systems are increasingly pressured. Attitudes of many doctors and other healthcare workers are changing, with concerns about work-life balance and burnout. In this context multi-professional team members might be less willing to “go the extra mile” in offering compassionate care, in the way Jesus demonstrated. There are many studies that show compassion benefits not just patients but also healthcare workers. Professor Rylance will be sharing thoughts about the nature of Whole Person Care, evidence for the benefits, and how it can be taught. Professor Rylance has been a Consultant in General and Renal Medicine in Wolverhampton, UK. Throughout his career he has led medical education, as Postgraduate Clinical Tutor and then Head of the Undergraduate Academy and is Honorary Professor in the University of Birmingham. He is part of the Management Team of PRIME International (Partnerships in International Medical Education), a Christan Medical Education charity, whose teaching includes Whole Person Care. His overseas experience started with a medical student elective in Liberia and more recently has taught with PRIME in the Seychelles, Uganda and Burundi, and now increasingly developing international online programmes. Webinar #306 Dr Brent Van Andel - Mobilising doctors for underserved areas

Recorded on 23 July 2026 for ICMDA Webinars. Peter Saunders chairs a webinar with Dr Brent Van Andel According to a recent WHO report, over half of the world’s population lacks access to basic health care services. Using Matthew 9:35-38, and examples from his own experiences, Dr. Brent Van Andel will explain why mobilizing medical professionals in these underserved communities is so important and necessary in our world today. He will also present a framework used at the Luke Society including a number of concepts that can be applied by other individuals or organizations doing similar work. Dr. Brent Van Andel is the Executive Director of the Luke Society, an organization in the United States, based in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. The Luke Society partners with Christian doctors and nurses working in their own underserved communities all around the world. They currently have over 40 partnerships in 30 countries. Before joining the Luke Society, Dr Van Andel worked in New Mexico as a Family Physician for 17 years. He is married to Cindy, also a Family Physician, who now practices where they live in Sioux Falls. For more info from Luke Society visit https://www.lukesociety.org/ To listen live to future ICMDA webinars visit https://icmda.net/resources/webinars/

Webinar #305 Dr Hedwin Kadrianto - Human Trafficking in Dental Practice

Recorded on 16 July 2026 for ICMDA Webinars. Peter Saunders chairs a webinar with Dr Hedwin Kadrianto Studies suggest that up to 87% of human trafficking victims interact with a healthcare professional—including dentists—while they are being actively trafficked. As a dentist, you may encounter these patients in your practice presenting with dental pain, oral trauma, sexually transmitted infections, or other oral health concerns. This webinar will equip you to identify and respond to potential trafficking victims, recognise trauma triggers in the dental setting, and implement a trauma-informed approach to dental care. Hedwin is an Indonesian dentist with postgraduate study in Oral Medicine. He was born again in 2007, and since then has been involved in local and national student ministry through IFES and CMDF Indonesia. He is married to Ruth, a cardiologist, and they have two sons. In October 2016, he was appointed as an AEO for ICMDA's South East Asia student and junior graduate ministry; this was expanded to cover the Oceania region in 2020 and the East Asia region in 2022. His areas of interest are in the field of dentistry for people with HIV (including promoting equality of dental treatment access), anti-human trafficking, medical missions networking, advocacy and politics. To listen live to future ICMDA webinars visit https://icmda.net/resources/webinars/

Webinar #304 Dr Paul Coulter - Leadership integrity

Recorded on 9 July 2026 for ICMDA Webinars. Peter Saunders chairs a webinar with Dr Paul Coulter Leadership failings are rarely out of the headlines—whether in politics, healthcare, or, most painfully, Christian ministry. Weak accountability structures and dysfunctional systems contribute to unhealthy leadership, but Scripture points to a deeper issue: the character of the leader. What we need are leaders marked by genuine and consistent integrity. In this webinar, Paul Coulter will offer a clear definition of integrity and outline core principles and practical ideas for recognising and sustaining it in leadership, even amid pressure and challenge. The aim is to encourage healthier leadership across church, mission, and healthcare settings. Paul lives in Lisburn, Northern Ireland, with his wife and two teenaged children. As Executive Director of Christianity in Society, he encourages Christ-centred thinking and living through consultancy and training in evangelism, leadership and pastoral care. He also teaches in four theological colleges and for churches and conferences across Ireland and beyond. Author of eight books, he blogs and podcasts regularly. His ministry draws on experience working as a medical doctor, lay magistrate and lecturer in theology, as well as in youth work, cross-cultural pastoral ministry, and charity management. For recreation he enjoys walking hills, writing poetry, and reading history. To listen live to future ICMDA webinars visit https://icmda.net/resources/webinars/

#303 Dr Chris Willmott - Genomics: The promise & peril of reading our DNA

Recorded on 25 June 2026 for ICMDA Webinars. Peter Saunders chairs a webinar with Dr Chris Willmott The ability to read the DNA of humans, and other species, is radically altering healthcare offering, for example, more accurate diagnosis and prognosis, with the potential for more targeted “personalised” treatment. Elsewhere, the availability of “at home” DNA tests, such as those marketed by 23andMe and Ancestry, are revealing previously unknown details of family history and heritage. Having reviewed some of these uses, this talk will reflect on many of the ethical implications that emerge from these developments. Having completed a PhD on the molecular basis of resistance to antibacterials, Chris spent four years as a Staffworker with UCCF (the IFES movement in the UK). In 2000, he returned to the University of Leicester where he taught biochemistry and, increasingly, about the ethical implications of developments in biomedicine. Since retirement (2022), he has continued to have an active interest in bioethics and his book on Genomics and Ethics is currently with the publishers for review. To listen live to future ICMDA webinars visit https://icmda.net/resources/webinars/

Webinar #302 Dr Peter Halestrap - The impact of training in mission hospitals

Recorded on 18 June 2026 for ICMDA Webinars. Peter Saunders chairs a webinar with Dr Peter Halestrap Mission hospitals have historically played a vital role not only in delivering healthcare but also in training and mentoring healthcare workers. This educational ministry provides opportunities for mission hospitals to address local healthcare needs in a sustainable manner, with formally approved programmes enabling further influence and partnership potential. Training provides a wonderful environment in which discipleship can thrive, ensuring graduates have not only the requisite clinical skills but also a heart to use these gifts to serve God. In this session we will look together at the opportunities and challenges for mission hospitals involved in training to increase their impact, locally, globally and eternally. Pete Halestrap is a Family Medicine doctor (GP) from the UK. He works in a local clinic providing primary care alongside training medical students and GP registrars. He previously spent 11 years working in AIC Kijabe Hospital, Kenya, where he served in several roles including as Director of Education and Research. He supervised the College of Health Sciences as well as numerous residency programmes and was involved in the initiation of several new medical training programmes. He continues to work with the hospital's online learning team and serves on the education and research committee of the East, Central and Southern African College of Family Physicians. To listen live to future ICMDA webinars visit https://icmda.net/resources/webinars/
