    Matthew 13:1–23

In Matthew 13, Jesus begins teaching in parables, starting with one of His most familiar: the Parable of the Sower, also known as the Parable of the Four Soils. But this story is about far more than seeds and soil. It is a picture of the human heart. In this episode of The Overflow Podcast, we walk through Matthew 13:1–23 and look at the four different responses to the Word of God: the hardened path, the rocky ground, the soil crowded by thorns, and the good soil that receives the Word and bears fruit. What causes a heart to become hard? What happens when faith has no deep roots? What are the cares, distractions, and desires of this world that can slowly choke out the Word? And what does it look like to have a heart that is ready to hear, receive, and respond to Jesus? We also explore why Jesus taught in parables, what He meant when He said, “He who has ears, let him hear,” and the beautiful invitation found within His warning. We cannot control the condition of another person’s heart, but we can faithfully sow the seed, examine our own hearts, and continually return to the Lord. Before diving into Matthew 13, the team also reflects on a powerful weekend at New River, sharing takeaways about marriage, worship, the presence of God, surrender, and the simplicity and power of Jesus. Where is your heart today? Is it hard, shallow, crowded, or fruitful? Join us as we study Matthew 13 and ask the Lord to give us ears to hear and hearts ready to receive His Word. Matthew 12:38-42

Why did the Pharisees ask Jesus for another sign after already witnessing His miracles? Could spiritual blindness cause us to miss what God is doing right in front of us? In this episode of The Overflow Podcast, Pastors Park and Vernon explore Matthew 12:38–42 and Jesus’ response to the scribes and Pharisees. Together, they explain the sign of Jonah, its connection to the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ, and what Jesus meant when He declared that something greater than Jonah and Solomon had come. This biblical conversation examines spiritual blindness, repentance, the danger of religious pride and the importance of recognizing Jesus as Lord. It also challenges us to consider whether familiarity, sin, distraction or our own desires are keeping us from recognizing the presence and work of God. Pastor Park also shares a moving reflection on the life and legacy of his friend JP, reminding us that true success is not measured by wealth, recognition or worldly influence, but by a life faithfully surrendered to Jesus. Are we asking God for more proof while overlooking what He has already revealed? Are there places in our hearts where Jesus is not preeminent? And are we living with the humility, compassion and faith of those who truly know Him? Matthew 12:9-14

What happens when our rules about following God actually get in the way of following Him? In this episode of The Overflow Podcast, we continue our study through Matthew 12, focusing on verses 9–14. Jesus enters the synagogue and encounters a man with a withered hand. The Pharisees see an opportunity to accuse Him. Jesus sees a person worth stopping for. Their question is simple: Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath? Jesus’ response exposes something much deeper about the heart of God, the purpose of the Sabbath, and the danger of allowing religious rules to become more important than mercy, obedience, and people. We talk about how easily believers can create extra rules around what following Jesus is “supposed” to look like, even when those rules began with good intentions. What happens when our routines become laws? When protecting our idea of faithfulness keeps us from responding to the person God has placed directly in front of us? We also share stories of God’s activity at New River, including conversations about discerning the voice of the Holy Spirit, responding when you feel prompted by God, the power of prayer, and what happens when our public worship becomes the overflow of private time spent with Jesus. In this episode: • Matthew 12:9–14 and Jesus healing on the Sabbath • Why the Pharisees were angry with Jesus • The danger of legalism and man-made religious rules • What Jesus teaches us about mercy and doing good • Why people matter more than protecting our systems • How to discern the leading of the Holy Spirit • Learning to recognize and respond to God’s voice • Why prayer and time with God produce spiritual fruit • The difference between performing Christianity and living from an overflow • Keeping open hands with God instead of building our own rules • Remembering that God still sees and cares for the one Jesus reminds us that it is lawful to do good. Following Him isn't about building increasingly complicated systems around our faith. It's about knowing Him, listening to Him, and being willing to respond when He calls. Matthew 12:1-8

The Overflow Podcast is BACK! After a summer break, we’re jumping back into the Gospel of Matthew with Matthew 12:1-8 and a conversation about the Sabbath, legalism, personal conviction, and the danger of adding rules Jesus never gave us. When the Pharisees accuse Jesus’ disciples of breaking the Sabbath, Jesus exposes something much deeper than a disagreement about rules. They had taken God’s law and surrounded it with man-made requirements that placed heavy burdens on people rather than leading them into the mercy, provision, and rest of God. Jesus responds with Scripture and reminds them: “I desire mercy, not sacrifice.” And that raises an important question for us today: Have we ever done the same thing? In this episode, we talk about the difference between biblical commands and personal convictions, how church culture can turn preferences into requirements, what genuine Sabbath rest was intended to accomplish, and how easily something God asks of one person in a particular season can become a rule we impose on everyone else. We also get practical about worship styles, church traditions, entertainment choices, Halloween, schooling decisions, serving, and other areas where Christians can be tempted to say, “This is how God is leading me, therefore this is how every Christian should live.” Following Jesus requires obedience, but it also requires wisdom, discernment, relationship with the Holy Spirit, and trust that Jesus is a good Shepherd. Sometimes freedom in Christ means saying no to something. Sometimes that same freedom means realizing God never prohibited it in the first place. The goal isn't to find a new list of rules. The goal is a heart that genuinely desires to honor Christ. Before diving into Matthew 12, we also catch up on what God did over the summer and share stories of His faithfulness, provision, answered prayer, and activity in our church and our lives. Scripture discussed: Matthew 12:1-8, Matthew 9, Deuteronomy 23, 1 Samuel 21 In this episode: Matthew 12 Bible study • Jesus and the Sabbath • Christian legalism • personal convictions • biblical commands • freedom in Christ • mercy not sacrifice • Christian living • church culture • worship • hearing the Holy Spirit • spiritual discernment
