    Health 411 - Homeopathy

Homeopathy is an alternative medicine made in 1796 by German physician Samuel Hahnemann. Hahnemann believed that substances that caused symptoms of disease in healthy people could provide a cure for the sick. This ideology is called similia similibus curentur, in english this translates to "like cures like.” To create these remedies, practitioners repeatedly dilute the substance in water by shaking it until the final product practically has nothing left of the original substance. It’s believed that through this process, the diluent is able to remember and hold the energy of the original substance. At the time of its creation, homeopathy was a safer alternative to common practices like mercury or leeches. However, in today's world of science there are many debates on whether or not these practices are safe or ethical.  In today's episode of Health 411, Dr. Jonathan Karp and graduate student producer Iso Rampulla explain the history of homeopathy and the truth behind the placebo effect. They explore the validity of results and why it’s important to understand the actual impact of homeopathic treatment inside of relying on it as a sole cure. The two discuss the recent bill, S.4692 - Homeopathic Drug Product Safety, Quality, and Transparency Act, which desires to amend the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act for homeopathic drugs and the dangers of it being passed.  Tune in to this week's episode of Health 411 to learn more about the history of homeopathy and the impacts it’s has on today's world.
