Colonize The Ocean - Shorts : What Happened To...Hydropolis Underwater Hotel and Resort

Today, we’re continuing our "What Happened To?" series, taking a dive into the ambitious—and ultimately stalled—underwater hotel projects that captured the world's imagination. When you think of cutting-edge architecture and sheer, extravagant luxury, Dubai is usually at the top of the list. So it's no surprise that back in 2005, they announced what was set to be the world's very first multi-room underwater resort: The Hydropolis Underwater Hotel and Resort. The Vision Location & Depth: Submerged roughly 20 meters (~60 feet) off the coast of Jumeirah Beach. Scale: Planned to feature around 220 underwater suites housed in an organic, jellyfish-inspired dome made of plexiglass, concrete, and steel. Connectivity: A dedicated underwater tunnel and high-speed train system to transport guests seamlessly from land to their ocean-floor suites. Estimated Cost: Hundreds of millions of euros. What Happened?Despite the high-profile announcement and stunning concept renders, the project hit significant financial turbulence and development authority roadblocks. By 2014, Hydropolis was officially placed on hold. Today, it remains in a state of development limbo, with little to no expectation that construction will ever resume. Colonize The Ocean : Nuclear Seabed Batteries; Powering the Silent Deep

The United States is currently developing nuclear-powered batteries designed to reside on the ocean floor and provide energy for underwater drone submarines. This initiative, led by the startup Zeno Power under a Department of Defense contract, repurposes strontium-90—a radioactive byproduct—to create a long-lasting power grid for deep-sea sensors and autonomous vehicles. Unlike previous attempts from the 1960s, these modern systems utilize Stirling engines to achieve significantly higher efficiency and portability. By recycling legacy nuclear material stored by the Department of Energy, the military aims to establish a strategic presence in the Pacific that can operate for nearly three decades without human intervention. The project recently reached a critical milestone by securing a specialized facility in California for the assembly and handling of these radioactive components. Commercial production is anticipated to begin by 2028, potentially revolutionizing how the Navy maintains its long-term maritime surveillance. https://atlantisseacolony.com/ #NuclearPoweredBatteries #ZenoPower #DeepSeaEnergy #UnderwaterDrones #Strontium90 #DoDContract #StirlingEngine #OceanFloorPower #NuclearRecycling #PacificStrategy #MaritimeSurveillance #NavyTech #RadioisotopePower #LongDurationEnergy #DeepSeaSensors #AutonomousUnderwaterVehicles #NuclearInnovation #CaliforniaNuclearFacility #DefenseTech2028 #StrategicUnderseaPresence

Colonize The Ocean - Shorts : What Happened To...Poseidon Undersea Resorts

In this August 10, 2026 episode of Colonize the Ocean, Brendon Traxler kicks off a mini-series on ambitious underwater habitats and resorts that never made it. He dives into the biggest name of them all: Poseidon Undersea Resorts, the project led by Bruce Jones of U.S. Submarines. The domain dates back to 2003 (over 20 years old), and the idea itself is even older—Jones had been floating concepts for an underwater habitat years earlier. The website is still online and looks solid, but the project went dead in the water. Last social media activity was in 2014, when they claimed they were about 36 months away (pointing to a 2016 opening). Nothing ever happened. Jones later shifted focus more toward private submarines. Brendon believes it was a genuine effort—not just a PR stunt. The designs were stunning and could have delivered a strong return, but the price tag (likely around half a billion dollars) was massive. Like so many other underwater projects, it simply never materialized. He asks listeners: Do you remember Poseidon? Did you ever want to stay there? Drop a comment. Colonize The Ocean - Shorts : Is Proteus Finished?

Brendon is back with another episode of Colonize the Ocean, still refining the setup and audio while juggling longer-format ideas. This time he zeros in on one of the biggest questions in the underwater habitat world right now: Deep is in the water. They’ve secured funding, built a habitat, and are actually operating. That was the spotlight Fabian Cousteau and Proteus had owned for years. So… what now? Brendon’s take: You can never have too many underwater habitats.Deep’s progress should (hopefully) be a net positive for everyone in the space. There’s still a clear need and place for Proteus. He’d love to hear what the community thinks. He also shares a personal note: meeting Fabian a couple years ago at a SeaLab event remains a bucket-list highlight, and he’s hoping to catch up with him again soon to hear where things stand. Coming up: A more detailed, thought-out long-form piece on Deep (now that they’re operational) and the broader habitat landscape.Updates from ASC meetings.Brendon and Babe heading to DEMA this year.Support / ConnectFree Patreon polls & content: patreon.com/atlantisseacolonyEverything ASC: atlanticsseacolony.com Drop your thoughts in the comments — is there still room (and demand) for Proteus now that Deep is live? Brendan wants to hear it.
