Inner Circle 21 - Surgery Won't Rebuild Your Shoulder

It can repair tissue. But then what? Most people think a scan tells them how bad their injury is. And if the damage looks serious enough, surgery will fix the problem. But there's an important distinction that often gets missed. Surgery can repair damaged tissue. It can't rebuild your physical capacity. In this episode, I share a conversation with someone working through our free Coaching In Your Inbox series who is preparing for shoulder surgery. He said something that highlighted a belief I think we need to challenge. That rehabilitation works for some people... but not for others. The reality is more complicated. Whether you choose surgery or not, your body still needs to rebuild the qualities required to function at a high level. Strength. Mobility. Structural balance. Stability. Movement quality. And ultimately, the capacity to tolerate the demands of your training, sport and life. In this episode, I explain why getting out of pain isn't the finish line, why rehabilitation matters both before and after surgery, and why I think about the human body like building a Formula One car. Because the goal isn't simply to repair the broken part. It's to build the entire system so it can handle the racetrack again. If you're currently dealing with an injury, considering surgery, or trying to return to the things you love, this is an important conversation. Inner Circle 20 - Don’t test it. Build it.

Most people think recovering from an injury is about getting back to where they were. But I think that's aiming too low. Today, I completed my first upper-body workout this year without once thinking about my injured shoulder. No pain. No need to scale anything back. And for the first time in months, I felt like I had much more in the tank. That's when the real challenge started. My ego wanted me to test my shoulder. Go heavier. See what I could do. But I had to remind myself... I'm not here to test my shoulder. I'm here to build it. In this episode, I explain why patience may be the most important part of rehabilitation. I also explain why constantly testing an injury creates the frustrating cycle of two steps forward and three steps backwards. But this episode is about something much bigger than shoulder rehab. It's about why we train. Because training doesn't just build strength, muscle, or flexibility. It builds patience, discipline, resilience, and confidence. It teaches you that you can set yourself a difficult goal, keep showing up, and eventually achieve it. And those lessons carry into every other part of your life. If you're dealing with an injury right now, don't judge your future by what your body can do today. Think about what could be possible 12 months from now. Inner Circle 17 - The Most Expensive Decision You'll Ever Make

Most people think waiting is the safe option. They tell themselves they'll start exercising when they feel stronger... join a coaching program when they're more motivated... or take the next step once they're "ready." But after more than twenty-five years of coaching people through injuries and major life changes, Rad and I have learnt something surprising. The biggest regret we hear is almost never, "I wish I'd waited longer." It's almost always... "I wish I'd started sooner." In this episode, I share an email from someone working through our free Coaching In Your Inbox series who unintentionally revealed one of the biggest mental traps we see in rehabilitation—and in life. He told us he'd join our coaching program once his shoulder felt ready for the next step. The problem is... Your shoulder doesn't suddenly become ready. It becomes ready because you take the right next step. We'll explore the hidden cost of waiting, why your body is always adapting (whether you realise it or not), and why the perfect time to act almost never arrives. If you've ever delayed improving your health, returning to training, or making an important decision because you thought you needed to be "ready" first, I think this conversation will completely change the way you think about progress. Inner Circle 16 - Your Shoulder Counts Everything

Most people think load management is simply about choosing the right weight in the gym. But after coaching injured lifters for more than twenty years, Rad and I have found that's only part of the picture. Recently, someone working through our free Coaching In Your Inbox series emailed us to say his shoulder was feeling much better. He'd even increased the weights on some of his rehab exercises. Then, just a few hours later, his shoulder flared up. At first, it seemed obvious that he'd progressed too quickly. But as we kept asking questions, a completely different cause emerged. He'd also started swimming again. That conversation became the perfect reminder that your shoulder doesn't separate gym training from the rest of your life. It simply experiences total load. In this episode, I explain one of my favourite analogies for understanding shoulder pain and rehabilitation: the load capacity cup. You'll learn why pain often isn't caused by the last thing you did, but by the combination of everything you've exposed your shoulder to throughout the day. More importantly, I'll explain why great rehabilitation isn't about avoiding load forever. It's about gradually increasing your shoulder's capacity so it can tolerate more training, more sport, and more of the activities you enjoy. If you've ever felt like your shoulder pain came out of nowhere, or you've been frustrated because your rehab suddenly stopped working, I think this episode will completely change the way you think about recovery. Inner Circle 15 - Progress Was Never Meant To Be Linear

Most people assume that if they're doing the right rehab exercises, progress should look like a straight line. A little better every week. Less pain. More strength. More confidence. But after coaching injured lifters for more than twenty years, Rad and I have learned that recovery rarely works that way. Some weeks you feel unstoppable. Then your shoulder flares up. The clicking returns. Your confidence disappears. And you start asking the same questions almost everyone asks: "Have I pushed too hard?" "Have I set myself back?" "Have I ruined everything?" This episode was inspired by the countless conversations we've had with people working through our free shoulder rehab resources, and one woman in particular whose journey reminded me that setbacks aren't usually signs of failure. More often, they're opportunities to learn. It's also a lesson that was reinforced while watching one of the most remarkable comeback stories I've seen in combat sports. A reminder that the path to any meaningful goal is rarely smooth, and that resilience is often built through the setbacks we wish we could avoid. If you've been discouraged by a flare-up, frustrated by a difficult week, or wondering whether your progress has stalled, I think you'll find this conversation reassuring. Because progress was never meant to be linear. Click play, and I'll explain what I mean. 👉 Watch the SLAP Tear Rehab Video on Youtube 👉 Learn More About Working With Us
