What Should I Ask at an Art Fair?

WHAT SHOULD I ASK AT AN ART FAIR? Walking into an art fair can be exciting, inspiring and sometimes overwhelming. With so many galleries, artists and artworks in one place, how do you know what to ask, what to look for and whether a work is right for you? In this episode, host Juliet Rees Davies share a practical guide to navigating an art fair with greater confidence and curiosity. Drawing on more than two decades of experience as an art advisor, curator and gallerist, she explores the questions that can help you look beyond the surface of an artwork and understand its story, context and value. She also discuss what it feels like from the gallery’s perspective. Having represented artists and exhibited at art fairs for many years, she understands the responsibility galleries carry when presenting an artist’s work and supporting the development of their career. In this episode: • How to approach and speak with a gallery • What to ask about the artist and the artwork • Questions about materials, editions, provenance and condition • What to clarify about framing, delivery, insurance and additional costs • How to understand pricing without feeling uncomfortable • Why your own emotional response remains one of the most important considerations • A practical checklist to take with you to your next art fair AFFORDABLE ART FAIR STOCKHOLM Juliet will be the official on-site Art Advisor at Affordable Art Fair Stockholm, taking place from 30 September–4 October 2026 at Nacka Strandsmässan. The Art World Has Changed - So Have I

After more than two decades working with artists, collectors, galleries and art fairs, the art world has changed and so have I. In this episode, I step back behind the microphone to share a more personal reflection on the journey from Nordic Art Agency to Rees Davies Art Advisory, and why now feels like the right time for a new chapter. I discuss the changes I have witnessed across the contemporary art world, the realities of running a physical gallery, the evolving role of galleries and art fairs, and how the way we discover, buy and live with art continues to change. I also share why I have chosen to move towards an independent art advisory model working across artists, galleries, art fairs, private collections, interiors and architecture rather than being defined by a traditional gallery space or fixed roster of artists. The conversations, artists and relationships built through Nordic Art Agency remain an important part of that story. They now form the foundation and archive of Rees Davies Art Advisory an independent, international and personal approach to discovering and collecting contemporary art. And the podcast continues too. There are many more conversations to come. Artists Gallery - In Conversation

In this episode host Juliet Rees Davies is joined by Jaret Loggen-berg and Barbara Lenhard, Directors of the Artists Gallery in Cape Town, South Africa to discuss how the art world is transforming and priorities are transitioning from prestige and scarcity to access and attention. Strategies now focus on making art emotionally resonant and lowering barriers to entry, allowing for greater flexibility, renewed focus, and innovative ways of engaging with both artists and audiences. The Artist Gallery is co-owned and driven by artists and passionate art lovers and is redefining the art collector’s experience by fostering an open dialogue between young and established South African artists and art collectors.  The gallery will be exhibiting at the Affordable Art Fair in Stockholm this year and Jaret Loggen-berg will be looking forward to meet art buyers! The Emerging Artists Development Trust (EADT) is a charitable initiative established by the Artists Gallery founders and represented artists and beyond.  The EADT has been selected as the chosen charity for this year’s Affordable Art Fair in Stockholm.  You can discover more by following the Artist Gallery and  Affordable Art Fair Stockholm on instagram.
