Hey everyone, I’m Matthew a historian of the Antebellum south and American Slavery and former Park Ranger with the National Park Service. While obtaining my degree at the University of Mississippi I realized that most people believe in what I like to call broken history; history that is not entirely wrong but not completely true. This podcast will be about debunking the untruths we were all taught. Along the way we will talk to a variety of historians and take listener recommendations for episodes and answer any questions. The American South Today Pt 2: American Memory

I’m back! After a brief hiatus, we wrap up our talk about the American south today. In this episode I talk about how the Lost Cause narrative came about and how it has found its way into every facet of American society as a way to truly understand why the South markets itself as only being a few years off from the fighting of the Civil War

Who, What, Where, and How: The American South Today Pt. 1

The American South today is much more of a unique region than one may think. A region that is defined more by its past than the variety of cultures that call it home in the modern age.  The modern South is so unique that I am splitting up this content into two episodes. Part one dives into Who is southern, what does it mean to be southern, how do we study the South, but more importantly, where is the South?

    What is a historian?

I figured the first topic to cover on a podcast about history is to explain what a historian actually is (No we are not your trivia guru's). I also talk a bit more in-depth about what future episodes will look like and why I wanted to become a historian. If you have questions or want to drop some ideas for future episodes like our page on Facebook or send an email to brokenhistorypodcast@gmail.com.
