"It's never too late": Nate Gormley on addiction, faith and a second chance

In 2013, Nate Gormley sat in a courtroom facing drug trafficking and manufacturing charges that could have meant life in prison. He took a blind plea, the judge gave him a seven-year deferred sentence, and he was back to using within 24 hours. On this episode of the Timeloop, Nate tells host Micah Choquette how he hit bottom, got a phone call that led to treatment, and has been sober since Aug. 28, 2016. Then he went back in front of the same judge and took a second blind plea against his attorney's advice. He talks about surrender and obedience, running from a treatment-center treadmill all the way to the Boston Marathon, and his 60 seconds in front of the Pardon and Parole Board. Today Nate owns Oklahoma Fence and Gate, and through his nonprofit, Arise and Build, he gives men coming out of prison a place to live and a job, often on the same day they're released. If you know someone affected by addiction, share Nate's story with them. 🔗 Links: Oklahoma Fence and Gate Construction: https://oklahoma-fence.com/ Arise & Build Re-Entry Program: https://ariseandbuildreentry.org 0:00 Intro 0:27 Meet Nate Gormley 3:20 2013: Facing life in prison 3:59 What a blind plea is 5:12 A miracle in Judge Drummond's courtroom 7:08 Back to using in less than 24 hours 10:18 A dangerous ultimatum from law enforcement 12:10 Rock bottom and a mother's prayers 14:51 The phone call that led to treatment 16:42 Back in front of the same judge 19:05 "Hire people just like you" 21:27 A second blind plea 24:27 What Nate told the judge 25:36 Surrender and obedience 29:13 From the treadmill to the Boston Marathon 37:41 "It's never too late": seeking a pardon 41:11 60 seconds before the Pardon and Parole Board 42:44 Arise and Build: jobs and housing after prison 44:15 Closing The Timeloop is brought to you by Sapulpa Times.
