The San Diego Padres somehow lost a game they appeared to have won twice. San Diego carried a 3-1 lead into the ninth inning behind six strong innings from Robbie Ray, Xander Bogaerts' two-run single and a Sung-Mun Song sacrifice fly. Then came one of the strangest plays of the season. With two outs in the ninth, Jonny DeLuca lifted a fly ball to left field. Samad Taylor tracked it down and got the baseball into his glove several feet short of the wall — but after Taylor's glove contacted the wall, the ball popped out and went over the fence for a game-tying two-run homer. Instead of a Padres victory, the game was tied 3-3. San Diego survived the 10th behind a tremendous escape from Yuki Matsui and retook the lead 4-3 in the 11th on Ty France's sacrifice fly. Then they blew the lead again. A Xander Bogaerts fielding error allowed Tampa Bay to tie the game before Jorge Mateo's single to left scored the winning run for a 5-4 Rays walk-off victory in 11 innings. Robbie Ray allowed just one run on three hits over six innings, while Bradgley Rodriguez, Adrian Morejon and Matsui combined for three scoreless relief innings. Mason Miller was charged with two runs in the ninth, although the game-tying homer came on the bizarre ball that Taylor initially had in his glove. The Padres finish with just six hits, go 1-for-6 with runners in scoring position, blow two separate late leads and leave Tampa Bay after being swept. With Arizona idle Sunday after entering the day tied with San Diego for the final NL Wild Card spot, the loss puts even more pressure on the Padres' postseason chase.
