#62: AI in Design and Art - former Senior Design Khan Academy, Professor, One Project (Raphael Arar)

By Raphael (Forbes 30 under 30 in Enterprise technology): I work at the nexus of complex systems, transdisciplinary design and arts-based research. For the past decade, I've helped others both untangle messes and uncover opportunities through a balancing act of problem-solving and creative inquiry. I currently lead Alternatives at One Project, where we're working to design, implement and scale new forms of economics and governance that are equitable, ecological and effective. I also serve as a Board Member at Leonardo, the International Society for the Arts, Sciences and Technology. Previously, I led design for learners at Khan Academy, tackled ethical platforms of AI at IBM Research, taught media theory at the USC School of Cinematic Arts and designed over a hundred iOS apps with Apple. My artwork has been shown at museums, conferences, festivals and galleries internationally including the ZKM | Center for Art and Media, SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory, International Symposium on Electronic Art (ISEA), Gamble House Museum, ACM CHI Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems, Boston Cyberarts Gallery, and Athens Video Art Festival. Commercially, my work has been featured in publications including Inc. Magazine, FastCompany, Wired and others, and in 2017, I was listed as one of Forbes’s “30 under 30” in Enterprise Technology. 0:00 - Introduction Raphael 1:04 - How his interest in complex systems evolved 4:10 - How he applied his skills to education 7:21 - Democratising & scaling education (fostering children's intrinsic motivation for education) 14:30 - Changing an extrinsic motivation to an intrinsic one 18:16 - Working at IBM Research 22:04 - Changes in education during the pandemic & is there an optimal solution? 37:32 - How recent changes (e.g., the rapid growth of technology & Web 3.0) are affecting schooling 48:33 - How can you combine a decentralized economy with education? 50:52 - Raphael’s current work at “One Project” ... #60: Life changing Medicine that can cure cancer, flu, ... - AI Proteins (Chris Bahl)

Some common life-saving medicines, such as insulin, are made of proteins so large and fragile that they need to be injected instead of ingested as pills. But a new generation of medicine -- made from smaller, more durable proteins known as peptides -- is on its way. In a quick, informative talk, molecular engineer and TED Fellow Christopher Bahl explains how he's using computational design to create powerful peptides that could one day neutralize the flu, protect against botulism poisoning and even stop cancer cells from growing. Chris Bahl is a protein designer, biochemist and structural biologist.  Chris pioneered the ability to computationally design synthetic miniproteins de novo. He began this work at the Institute of Protein Design in Seattle as a postdoctoral fellow, and he matured this design technology into a high-throughput platform with his team at the Institute for Protein Innovation in Boston where Chris was the Head of Protein Design. Today, Chris is the Chief Scientific Officer and Co-founder of AI Proteins, Inc.  AI Proteins is leveraging the unique and powerful synthetic miniprotein modality to rapidly create novel therapeutics. AI Proteins is a newly founded biotechnology company focused on the design and engineering of synthetic miniprotein therapeutics. We combine cutting-edge computational protein design with advanced laboratory robotics to accelerate the creation of life-changing medicines. Our common goal is to markedly improve human health and wellbeing. Our environment is rigorous, fast-paced and collaborative, bringing together passionate individuals who are making an impact. We inspire creativity and discovery by embracing an open culture that fosters innovation, initiative, teamwork and excellence. ... 00:00 Introduction & the purpose of these medicines and how it all started 04:55 Why are mini proteins becoming known now  07:40 Why isn’t being used during the pandemic 09:42 How do you know if mini proteins are safe  & When to expect AiProteins on the market 16”17 Which diseases will be cured first 22:10 Others working on proteins  29:40 Proteins potential for the future 32:22 why not work with the military  36:40 Career advice to go in this industry 37:25 Moving from academia to pursue business  42:00 Matching with a suitable VC 45:25 Company growth and Difference with academia 51:24 Whats the future of medicine? 54:55 A plea to entertainers to help science 58:50 Closing & Where to find AiProteins ...
