(Ep: 533) Jelly Bean Falls Into the Toilet — And Then Life Gets Complicated

On this episode , I’m joined by Amy Meislin Pollack, author of The Adventures of Jelly Bean series. Amy has been living with the character of Jelly Bean since she was in fourth grade in 1960. Over the years, she told Jelly Bean stories to her students during a 40+ year teaching career, then to her children, and later to her grandchildren. Now Jelly Bean’s adventures are available for middle-grade readers everywhere. The series follows a fourth-grade girl facing the kinds of challenges many kids recognize: friendship drama, popularity, feeling overlooked at home, family conflict, changing relationships, grief, and learning how to make choices on her own. In the first book, Jelly Bean’s day begins with the kind of disaster only a kid could truly appreciate — falling into the toilet, missing carpool, getting to school late, and losing her chance at one of the good parts in the Thanksgiving play. Across The Adventures of Jelly Bean, The Further Adventures of Jelly Bean, and The Still Further Adventures of Jelly Bean, Jelly Bean learns that life is complicated, relationships change, and growing up often means discovering who you really are. We talk about Judy Blume-style honesty, teaching, parenting, grandparenting, and why kids still need coming-of-age books. #AmyMeislinPollack #TheAdventuresOfJellyBean #JellyBeanBooks #MiddleGradeBooks #KidsLit #ChildrensBooks #ComingOfAgeStories #FriendshipBooks #JudyBlumeFans #FamilyStories #GrandparentAuthor #TeacherAuthor #BookInterview #WeMakeChildrensBooks #Storycomic The Title sequence was designed and created by Morgan Quaid. (Ep: 532) John Holland Finally Brings Vampires vs. Zombies Back From the Dead

John Holland is back on the show for a new Kickstarter  — Vampires vs. Zombies, a comic idea that has been living in his head for years. John first tried to bring the story to life with artist Hernan Gonzales, who drew about eight pages in black and white. John loved the pages, especially the way the black-and-white style made the red blood stand out, but the project stalled when he had too many things going at once and not enough money to keep it moving. Years later, after Hernan moved on to work on Star Trek for IDW, John found himself working with another artist he admired: Jorge Luis Gabotto. While taking a short break from Akemi, John revisited the old script, realized he already had the story mapped out, and brought Vampires vs. Zombies back into motion. In this episode, we talk about unfinished creative projects, knowing when to return to an old idea, the fun of classic monster matchups, and how Jorge’s art, colors, lettering, and character expressions helped shape this new version of the comic. If you like indie comics, horror-action, vampires, zombies, and behind-the-scenes creator stories, this episode is a fun one. #JohnHolland #DieBoldComics #VampiresVsZombies #KickstarterComics #IndieComics #HorrorComics #ZombieComics #VampireComics #ComicCreator #CrowdfundedComics #JorgeLuisGabotto #IndieHorror #ComicBookKickstarter #Storycomic #ComicsInterview The Title sequence was designed and created by Morgan Quaid. (Ep: 531) The Cosmic Horror Comic That Starts on the Moon

#TheEyeCollector #JonathanBall #GMBChomichuk #ImageComics #StrangerFiction #AlchemicalPress #CosmicHorror #HorrorComics #IndieComics #CreatorOwnedComics #ComicBooks #Apollo10 #SurrealHorror #ComicsInterview #Storycomic On this episode, I’m joined by Jonathan Ball of Stranger Fiction and GMB “Greg” Chomichuk of Alchemical Press to talk about their new Image Comics series, The Eye Collector. The Eye Collector begins with the Apollo 10 mission, when humans make wishes over the Moon and draw the attention of an ancient spectral being. What does it want with Earth? What does it want with us? And what happens when desire, perception, and reality start to blur? Jonathan and Greg describe the series as cosmic horror, but it is also an experiment in what comics can do on the page. Each issue is designed to stand alone while building into a larger, multi-generational story that moves from the Moon to Earth and into a strange future. The series uses surreal visuals, shifting perspectives, and horror rooted in the terrible bargain: what would you trade to get what you most desire? We talk about the origins of The Eye Collector, the move to Image Comics, how Jonathan and Greg collaborate, and why this story feels like the kind of horror only comics can fully pull off. If you love cosmic horror, experimental storytelling, strange comics, and creator-owned genre work, this is a conversation worth seeing. The Title sequence was designed and created by Morgan Quaid. (Ep: 530) Two Sisters. One Blizzard. No One Coming to Save Them.

Sisters Alone follows two Syrian American sisters, Rama and Leena, who are trapped alone in their rural home during a deadly blizzard. With their father away for work, the storm leaves them without power, food, shelter, and anyone to rely on except each other. But this is more than a survival story. Rama and Leena are grieving their mother’s death, and each sister carries that loss differently. Rama is fiery, angry, and trying to take responsibility for everyone. Leena is quiet, withdrawn, and silently blaming herself. As the blizzard grows more dangerous, the sisters have to face not only the storm outside, but the pain and misunderstandings between them. We talk about writing in verse, balancing suspense with emotional truth, creating Syrian American representation in middle grade, and how stories about survival can also become stories about love, grief, and healing. The Title sequence was designed and created by Morgan Quaid. (Ep: 529) Hollywood Storytelling Meets Animal Facts in An Awesome Bird

#RustyAustin #AnAwesomeBird #ThePelican #ChildrensBooks #KidsLit #PictureBooks #AnimalBooks #Pelicans #StudentIllustrators #MiddleSchoolArt #ClassroomBooks #YoungCreators #ReadAloud #AuthorInterview #Storycomic On this episode, I’m joined by author Rusty Austin to talk about his children’s book An Awesome Bird: The Pelican. Rusty brings a unique background to the conversation. Before writing heart-centered children’s books, he worked in Hollywood, and now he’s using that storytelling experience to create books that entertain, teach, and encourage kids to see the world with more curiosity. An Awesome Bird: The Pelican introduces young readers to one of nature’s most interesting birds through playful writing, humor, and animal facts. What makes this book especially meaningful is that it was illustrated entirely by students from Nellie Coffman Middle School, giving young artists a real role in the creative process. We talk about why pelicans are such terrific subjects for kids, how Rusty made the shift from entertainment industry work to children’s literature, and why empowering young creators matters. We also get into the value of classroom-ready books, the joy of animal stories, and what it means for kids to see student artwork in a published book. If you love children’s books that mix learning, laughter, and community creativity, this is a fun one.   The Title sequence was designed and created by Morgan Quaid. (Ep: 528) Alan Barillaro on Courage, Spirit Animals, and Storytelling in Pictures

#AlanBarillaro #BunnsRabbit #BunnsRabbitII #TheReturnOfTheSpiritRabbit #MiddleGradeBooks #KidsFantasy #ChildrensBooks #IllustratedNovel #SpiritAnimals #FantasyAdventure #AuthorIllustrator #BookInterview #WeMakeChildrensBooks #Storycomic #KidsLit   On this episode, I’m joined by Alan Barillaro, author-illustrator and Academy Award–winning filmmaker, to talk about his upcoming book Bunns Rabbit II: The Return of the Spirit Rabbit. In this sequel, Bunns returns from her quest to find the Spirit Fox hoping to return to her quiet life with her family. But the Spirit Fox has other plans. A war is on the horizon, pitting the Spirits of the Sea and Wind against the Spirits of the Land and Fire — and somehow, one little rabbit may be the only one who can stop it. We talk about building a sequel that raises the stakes, how Alan blends prose, warm illustration, and graphic-style panels, and what it means to write a hero who is small in size but huge in responsibility. We also dig into the emotional themes behind the adventure: courage, identity, fear, family, and what happens when a character who feels different becomes the one everyone is counting on. If you love middle-grade fantasy, illustrated novels, spirit animal mythology, and big-hearted adventure stories, this conversation is for you. (Ep: 527) The Indie Comics Backlist Problem — And John Holland’s Smart Fix

John Holland returns to the show to talk about the Die Bold Comics Digital Library, now moved to Fund My Comic, and why digital comics are such a smart way for readers to explore an indie creator’s back catalog. John has built a wide-ranging catalog through Die Bold Comics, with stories across horror, sci-fi, crime, fantasy, superhero, comedy, slice-of-life, and drama. The digital library campaign is designed to make those books easier to find, easier to buy, and easier to read — especially for people who have heard John on the show before but haven’t known where to start. We also talk about the realities of indie comics promotion: building a reader list, keeping older titles alive, packaging a catalog in a way that feels approachable, and using one campaign to build momentum for the next. If you’re an indie comics reader, a creator trying to figure out how to promote your backlist, or just someone who likes digital comics with no shipping headaches, this episode is worth a listen. #JohnHolland #DieBoldComics #FundMyComic #DigitalComics #PDFComics #IndieComics #ComicBooks #ComicCreator #ComicsInterview #CrowdfundedComics #SupportIndieComics #IndieCreator #ComicsCommunity #Storycomic #Backlist The Title sequence was designed and created by Morgan Quaid. Frank Walk from Pigmacast Studio to talk about his Kickstarter project Hellstones: Into the Fray—a supernatural action comic about power, survival, and the cost of stepping into a fight that’s bigger than you think. (kickstarter.com ) Frank is a creator who wears multiple hats: he’s a writer/creator, and he’s also a digital colorist, with Pigmacast Studio serving as both portfolio and shop for his work. (pigmacast.com ) We talk about building the world of Hellstones, keeping action readable and character-driven, and how color choices change the emotional temperature of a scene. We also get into the practical side of crowdfunding—how he’s packaging the book, what he learned from making earlier Hellstones material, and what he hopes new readers take away from this first big entry point. (kickstarter.com ) If you like supernatural action, indie comics with strong atmosphere, and creator conversations that get into real process, you’ll have fun with this one.
