Live it well :: Sometimes I think of a concept for a song, and I have to work at it for a week or two to get it to the finished product. I've never had a song come out of me as fast as this one did. This came to me after I missed out on a family outing due to my own apathy - I just didn't feel like going. I was playing my guitar on the back porch thinking about how much I regretted staying, and the words to the verses just poured out of me in about half an hour. I was openly sobbing as was moved by the words that kept coming. I wrote the chorus the next morning. V1 Taking bike rides in the park Catching fireflies after dark Hitting that swimming hole Or giving a push and pull to that ol' beat up tire swing These are the things that summer's made of And when you're a kid, oh, it's the greatest A blanket spread under fireworks A baseball game with with your father, and those evening suns that just never want to set And how you wished it would never end And how you'd count the weeks til school's back in But still that calendar'd keep flipping and flipping and flipping CH Why does it have to go so fast I want a life with no regrets We've each got our own story to tell And when they write my book I hope it's titled, He lived it well V2 Well now my kids tug on my arms Saying "daddy take us to the park" And while I've lost all sense of wonder They know there's still a kid down underneath all my maturity So they ask a second time I see that sparkle in their eyes And I want that sense of wonder too But all to often I just choose myself and for that we all lose But then before I know I start asking "where'd all the time go" It slips away with every inch they're growing and growing and growing CH I wanna live it well Come join me, live it well Spend some time skipping rocks, live it well Maybe drop a line down by the dock Go play catch, or fly a kite Don't let those moments pass you by Read 'em a book, pitch a tent Give 'em the gift of your presence Live it well, live it well Don't be afraid to live it well Die to yourself and live it well Just live it well, just live it well Beauty Remains :: V1 When the heartache's so great that you can't make a sound And all that you hear is your breathing in and out In that moment you wish this pain would pass But already knowing it surely will last BR1 Because that kind of hurt doesn't go away easy It pours out of hearts that've known love deeply That kind of hurt doesn't go away easy It doesn't go away easy CH Because a beautiful soul is so beautiful no matter how empty, no matter how full And that beauty's a mark of the Creator's heart Found in each image bearer, it's His calling card And although their beauty may fade, their beauty remains V2 So what do you do when that hard truth is known And just no matter how hard you try, there's no letting go It'll hit you in waves 'til your last dying breath With both tears and laughter again and again and again BR2 Because that kind of love doesn't go down easy It becomes a part of your very being That kind of love doesn't go down easy It doesn't go down easy It doesn't go down That kind of love doesn't go down easy It overcomes the hurting and the grieving That kind of love doesn't go down easy It doesn't go down easy Your Glory Awaits :: I love playing this song around easter. I wrote it a few years back, and always thought it needed something at the end so I added a little more this year. I just love the picture of Jesus identifying with us in our darkness. Such beautiful imagery that Jesus, being fully human, also fully understands our trouble, and pressed through it in obedience to glorify his Father. The words to this song came while sitting alone by a campfire in the wilderness of West Virginia. I was playing this simple tune on my uke, and as the fire died out, I continued to sit and play as my surroundings became complete darkness. It is a picture of wrestling through the lonely, fearful, angry, dark places in life. It's about the ongoing, repeated decision to lay down those things before Jesus, to surrender them to him in the same way that he surrendered to his Father. In doing so - in giving him total control of our thoughts, decisions, and will - a space is created in which he is free to act and reveal his glory to those all around us. His kingdom is advanced as we lay ourselves down in the most vulnerable, difficult places in life. V1 in a solitary place the last ember is fading and this darkness is so thick I cannot see anything and as the fear creeps in with despair to follow I'm struck with the notion that you'd lead me to the shadows and who am I to think this loss comes without purpose alas, but in this night your eye has seen everything and after all the "why's" give way to plain acceptance these clenched fists open wide, and these cold hands are lifted high CH1 and your glory awaits when I lay down my life your glory awaits when you come down from high your glory awaits, your glory awaits, you reach the darkest place your glory awaits, your glory awaits, when you reveal your face your glory awaits V2 in a solitary place they found you in a garden overwhelmed with grief, every friend had gone away and in that desperate state you pleaded with your father not my will but yours, but please won't you take this cup from me and given up to darkness you hung alone in shame sinless author of life held captive by the grave but it could not contain you, that stone was cast aside and all heaven cried out when God said rise my son arise! CH2 your glory awaits, you laid down your life your glory awaits, you came down from high your glory awaits, your glory awaits, you reached the darkest place your glory awaits, your glory awaits, for you revealed my face and your glory awaits PC Whenever you sever the ties and the fetters That binded the hearts of these slaves and these debtors Your glory awaits Your kingdom's a beacon that shines on the weak And the darkness can't hide from the light of it's freedom Your glory awaits The enemy couldn't be more surprised than to see The curtain that was torn as you hung on the tree Nature's law bended, death's time only lended And down to the depths back to glory ascended King of kings, Lord of lords, risen one, Living Word Sat at your rightful place - the right hand of YHWH Yours is the name that's above every other name Jesus, you're mighty to save And forever your glory awaits So let your glory fall, let your glory fall Let your glory shine, let your glory shine Your glory awaits Let your glory fall, let your glory fall, let your glory fall Let your glory shine, let your glory shine, your glory, your glory, glory, glory awaits in a solitary place your glory awaits
