Stop Giving Away Your Time For Free: Should You Charge For Site Visits?

Are free site visits costing your landscaping or garden design business more than you realise? A “free” visit might be free for the potential client, but it certainly isn’t free for you. Once you include the initial conversation, preparation, travelling, time on site, sharing your expertise and following up afterwards, a one-hour appointment can easily take three hours out of your working day. This episode was inspired by a recent conversation at my Garden Designers Round Table. One designer shared that she charges £350 for her initial consultation—and people are paying it. That sparked a much bigger conversation about why landscapers and garden designers are so willing to give away their time, ideas and professional knowledge before a client has made any commitment. In this episode, I explore: ● The true cost of providing free landscaping site visits ● The difference between giving a quotation and providing professional consultancy ● Why charging for initial consultations can improve lead quality ● How a consultation fee can help filter out unsuitable or uncommitted enquiries ● Why paying clients are often more prepared, engaged and committed ● The connection between lead qualification and a healthier sales pipeline ● What to do if you are worried potential clients will not pay ● Different ways landscapers and garden designers can introduce consultation fees ● Why you don’t need to immediately start charging £350 ● How to calculate whether free site visits are genuinely benefiting your business I’m not suggesting that every landscaper should suddenly charge the same fee—or that free quotations should disappear completely. But offering free site visits should be a deliberate commercial decision, not something you continue doing simply because that is how it has always been done. Your time, knowledge and experience have value before any physical landscaping work begins. After listening, review your last five site visits. Calculate how much time they really took, how many resulted in profitable projects and whether your current approach is helping your business—or simply filling your diary. If you need help reviewing your sales process, client journey, lead qualification or pricing, book a free 20-minute discovery call with me.I help landscapers and garden designers build more profitable, better-organised businesses through practical 1:1 coaching based on real landscaping-business experience—not textbook theory. Should Landscapers Open a Showroom? The Truth About Growing a Landscaping Business

Should every landscaping business have a showroom? It's a question that came straight from a listener, and the answer might surprise you. In this episode of The Limitless Landscapers Podcast, I'm sharing my honest thoughts on whether investing in a showroom is the right move for your landscaping business—and why the real question has very little to do with porcelain displays or paving samples. Having run an award-winning landscaping business myself, I've dreamt about creating a showroom. But not just any showroom.I wanted to build a destination. A hub where landscapers, garden designers, suppliers and homeowners could connect, learn, collaborate and do business together.Because a showroom shouldn't simply display products. It should create opportunities. In this episode we explore the difference between opening a showroom because it looks impressive and creating a commercial strategy that generates multiple income streams and long-term business growth. In this episode you'll learn: ● Whether a showroom is the right investment for your landscaping business. ● Why a showroom is a platform—not a business strategy. ● How to think like a business owner before making major investments. ● The power of creating multiple income streams within your business. ● How a showroom could become a community hub for landscapers, garden designers and homeowners. ● The questions you should ask before committing to a significant business expense. ● Why relationships, collaboration and community can become your biggest competitive advantage. Whether you're a sole trader, growing a team or planning the next stage of your landscaping business, this episode will help you think differently about growth and where your next investment should be. Key TakeawayDon't build a showroom because you think successful landscaping businesses have one. Build one because it supports a clear business model, creates multiple revenue streams and gives your customers and your industry a reason to keep coming back. How to Convert More Landscaping Enquiries Without Dropping Your Prices

Are you getting enquiries but struggling to turn them into signed landscaping projects? In this episode of The Limitless Landscapers Podcast, I dive into one of the biggest challenges facing landscaping businesses right now: sales conversion. Many landscapers believe they have a lead generation problem when, in reality, they have a sales process problem. As the market becomes more competitive and homeowners take longer to make decisions, the businesses that communicate best, follow up consistently and build trust quickly are the ones winning the work. In this episode, I share the practical sales strategies I use with my coaching clients to help them convert more enquiries into profitable landscaping projects without discounting their prices.Whether you're quoting £5,000 patios or £50,000 garden transformations, these simple changes can have a huge impact on your conversion rate, cashflow and confidence. In This Episode You'll Learn: ✅ Why most landscapers lose jobs before they've even sent the quote ✅ How to qualify enquiries properly and avoid wasting time The question every landscaper should ask during a site visit ✅ Why clients buy outcomes, not paving slabs and patios ✅ How to position yourself as a trusted adviser rather than "just another landscaper" ✅ The secret to creating proposals that stand out from the competition ✅ A follow-up system that helps you win more jobs without being pushy ✅ How to handle common objections around price, timing and competing quotes ✅ The one question that can dramatically improve your close rate Key Takeaway The landscapers winning the most profitable projects aren't always the cheapest and they aren't always the best builders. They're the businesses that create the most confidence throughout the buying journey.Improve your qualification process, communication, proposal structure and follow-up, and you'll convert more of the enquiries you're already receiving. The Real Reason Your Team isn't Performing

Most landscaping business owners think their biggest challenge is finding good people. But in reality, the issue usually isn’t the team…It’s the lack of structure, clarity, and leadership around them. In this episode of the Limitless Landscapers Podcast, I break down why team performance often falls short — and why it’s rarely about capability. Drawing on my experience scaling a landscaping business to 15 staff (and making plenty of mistakes along the way), I share what actually drives a high-performing team. If you’ve ever felt like: ● You’re constantly answering questions ● Jobs aren’t being done how you expected ● You end up re-doing work yourself ● Or it just feels easier to “do it yourself”This episode will help you understand why — and more importantly, how to fix it. In This Episode You’ll Learn ● Why team performance is usually a leadership and systems issue ● The most common mistakes landscaping business owners make with their team ● Why unclear roles and expectations create constant problems ● How to stop being the bottleneck in your business ● Simple ways to improve team performance without replacing people Key Takeaway Most teams aren’t underperforming. They’re under-led.When you put the right structure, expectations, and systems in place, performance improves quickly — without needing to constantly chase, fix, or firefight. Practical Questions to Ask Yourself ● Have I clearly defined what “good” looks like for my team? ● Do my team know exactly what they’re responsible for?● Am I the bottleneck in day-to-day decisions? ● What relies on me that shouldn’t?
