    Cornerstones

Matthew 21:33-46 What do y’all know about cornerstones? I guess we don’t really think all that much about cornerstones these days… unless we’re commemorating some sort of edifice that we hope is going to be around for a long, long time. Most buildings come and go… we build them, we use them, we may renovate […] A few words from Father Kemper is made with Jetpack Podcast. Thy kingdom come

Matthew 20:1-16 It just doesn’t seem fair, does it? I mean the guys who worked all day in the vineyard getting paid the same as the “Johnny-Come-Latelies” who only worked an hour. There’s gotta be some kind of law against that. I don’t have a problem with someone in need getting a little extra from […] A few words from Father Kemper is made with Jetpack Podcast. Christ, our Passover

Exodus 12:1-14 “Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us; Therefore, let us keep the feast” (BCP 364). How many times have we recited this familiar couplet after the Fraction, just prior to receiving Holy Communion? A few times, right? For some of us, more times than we can remember. The Host, elevated and broken… the […] A few words from Father Kemper is made with Jetpack Podcast. Full show notes and every episode at https://fatherkemper.blog/

    Being Church

Romans 12:9-21 Gotta love what the Apostle Paul sets forth as the “Marks of a True Christian:” Love out loud! …God, neighbor and even strangers. Hold fast to that which is good, render to no one evil for evil. Support the weak, help the afflicted, honor everyone… these admonitions should sound familiar to you. Spread […] A few words from Father Kemper is made with Jetpack Podcast. Full show notes and every episode at https://fatherkemper.blog/

    Grace

Romans 12:1-8 and Matthew 16:13-20 Grace. It’s a word we Christians use regularly. It’s sometimes conflated with another commonly used word: “blessing,” but the terms are not quite interchangeable. People of many cultures and faith traditions understand “blessing” as a special favor and protection bestowed upon temporal creatures (like ourselves) by a higher power, often […] A few words from Father Kemper is made with Jetpack Podcast. The strange story of Jesus and the Canaanite woman

Matthew 15:21-28 I’ve seen a number of social media posts this week, from a variety of preachers, fretting over how they might interpret Matthew’s gospel story about Jesus’ encounter with the Canaanite woman for their congregations. And, sure enough, it’s a tough one. Not me, however. I ascribe to the sentiments of Snoopy the Dog […] A few words from Father Kemper is made with Jetpack Podcast. The best way to walk on water

Matthew 14:22-33 Aieeeeeeee! “Lord, save me!” Matthew doesn’t say that Peter screamed as he began to sink, and felt the water closing over his head, but it seems reasonable that he would have. I know I would have. Even before Peter’s brush with death, the disciples had been having a pretty rough go of it. Struggling against the wind on a roiling […] A few words from Father Kemper is made with Jetpack Podcast. Full show notes and every episode at https://fatherkemper.blog/

    Listen to him!

Luke 9:28-36 So… a priest and a rabbi walked into a bar… oops, I mean they were sitting in a coffee shop one day having a theological conversation. We’ll call them Bob and Moishe. They were discussing the nature of God and salvation, and all sorts of pithy stuff. Things were beginning to get a […] A few words from Father Kemper is made with Jetpack Podcast. God is able

Matthew 20:20-28 “We are able.” What a crazy thing to say! I can’t help but imagine the look Jesus must have given James and John after they had blurted those words. A look of amusement, perhaps… tinged with pity. What were they thinking? Of course, we today have the benefit of hindsight. We know how the story of […] A few words from Father Kemper is made with Jetpack Podcast. Full show notes and every episode at https://fatherkemper.blog/

    Of wheat… and weeds

Matthew 13:24-30, 36-43 Separating the weeds from the wheat. Yeah, baby! That’s what God’s Messiah is gonna do on the last day. Earlier in Matthew’s gospel, John the Baptizer foreshadowed today’s parable when he said: “I baptize you with water for repentance, but one who is more powerful than I is coming after me; I […] A few words from Father Kemper is made with Jetpack Podcast.
