Improving the Patient Experience at the Doctor's Office

Dr. Wilner would love your feedback! Click here to send a text! Thanks! During this brief 10-minute video, I discuss the typical visit to the doctor's office, which begins with a request for payment following by instructions to fill out pages of forms.  First impressions are important, and I think doctors can do better! While payment is important, it doesn't have to be the first interaction. A warm greeting, an expression of concern regarding the patient's health, and a thank you for choosing that particular doctor and arriving on time is an alternative script that can be modified according to the individual circumstances. Couldn't office personnel be trained to offer a little compassion before reaching into the patient's wallet? I also remind the audience of last week's Episode #173 with Susan Landers, MD, where we discussed her new book, "Good Enough is Your Superpower." This discussion is especially pertinent to women physicians who suffer from perfectionism! Next week, I'll talk with Dr. Mike Myers about his new book, "The Vaccine Bible." Dr. Myers, a recently retired family physician, takes the mystery out of vaccines in this down-to-earth resource that includes the history, efficacy, and applicability of vaccinations. "Good Enough is Your Superpower" with Susan Landers, MD

Dr. Wilner would love your feedback! Click here to send a text! Thanks! Many thanks to retired neonatologist Susan Landers, MD, for joining me on Episode #173 of “The Art of Medicine with Dr. Andrew Wilner.” I first spoke to Susan on July 9, 2023, on Episode #89 about her book “So Many Babies.” In her first book she reflected on her career, particularly the daily challenge of work/life balance. Today, we discussed her new book, “Good Enough is Your Superpower: Overcoming Perfectionism for Women by Silencing Your Inner Critic and Setting Boundaries.” Dr. Landers confessed that for the first 15 years of her career, she suffered as a perfectionist. She was unable to silence her “inner critic” that insisted she was not “good enough.” Rather than take pride in a long and productive day at work, she felt she was shortchanging her children or husband. If she spent more time with her family, she felt dissatisfied with herself at work.  For a perfectionist, a seemingly simple task such as arranging a child’s birthday party required addressing so many details that it devolved into an exhausting chore. Dr. Landers concluded that the price of perfectionism is loss of rest and recovery. Dr. Landers eventually discovered effective strategies to silence her inner critic and take pleasure in being “good enough” as a wife, mother, and full-time physician. She provides sage advice to young women to combat perfectionism when facing the dual challenges of a career and family. We also discussed the concepts of “invisible labor” and “emotional load.” According to Dr. Landers, women tend to do more invisible labor and emotional load than men, which increases their overall workload and stress. Dr. Landers is planning a book on preventing osteoporosis. Inspired by her mother’s diagnosis and her own, she has thoroughly researched the topic and wants to share her findings with other women. You can find “Good Enough is Your Superpower” on Amazon here: https://amzn.to/45GTmWy You can also read Dr. Landers weekly newsletter “MomsMatter” on Substack:  https://substack.com/@landersmomsmatter?utm_source=global-search   #motherhood, #worklifebalance, #physicans, #dualcareer, #osteoporosis. #perfectionist #perfectionism Please click "Fanmail" and share your feedback! "Dance in a Madhouse" with author and psychiatrist Jess Wright

Dr. Wilner would love your feedback! Click here to send a text! Thanks! Many thanks to Jess Wright, psychiatrist and author of “Dance in a Madhouse.” Jess is a Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Louisville, where he sees patients, teaches, and does research.  Jess joins several other psychiatrists featured on “The Art of Medicine:” Jesse Gold (Episode #130), Richard Berlin (Episode #99), Awais Aftab (Episode #85), Steve Moffic (Episode #78), and Ronald Pies (Episode #63). Now working part-time, Jess has more time for fiction writing. As a psychiatrist with decades of experience, he incorporates some of his patient experiences into his creative writing.  During our 30-minute discussion, we discussed why Jess writes, how he writes, and his upcoming novels and memoir. We also addressed how the practice of psychiatry has changed since 1905, when his novel “Dance in a Madhouse” takes place.  Jess truly enjoys the intellectual challenge of creative writing and believes it may be a strategy to stave off the intellectual stagnation that can come with retirement and aging! Y ou can pre-order “Dance in a Madhouse” on Amazon here: https://amzn.to/4vZY7oV  Or learn more about Jess at his website: https://jesswrightmd.com/   #psychiatry #mentalillness #madness #madhouse #depression #bipolar    Please click "Fanmail" and share your feedback! A Pharmacist Obeys the Rules and Abandons a Patient

Dr. Wilner would love your feedback! Click here to send a text! Thanks! Welcome to Episode #2 of The In-Between Episodes. If you remember, these in-between episodes will occur in between the more formal interviews that happen every other week and that have happened every other week for the last seven years. Last week on the Art of Medicine, I had a great discussion with 401k specialist Ross Powell. I learned that a 401k is not only a retirement vehicle, but can be a powerful real estate investment tool as well. Next week, September 13, Jess Wright is going to tell us about his debut novel inspired by years of practicing psychiatry. It's titled, Dance in a Madhouse, and I can't wait to read it. Today, I'm going to tell you a story about how a 3rd party, in this case a corporation, slid between a well-meaning pharmacist and a desperate patient, which potentially fatal results. Learn about rabies with Dr. Wilner here: https://www.vumedi.com/video/rabies-update Psychiatrist and medical ethicist Ronald Pies, MD, assisted me with the research for this episode. As always, your feedback is appreciated! Please click "Fanmail" and share your feedback! If you enjoy an episode, please share with friends and colleagues. Imagining your retirement with 401k guru Ross Powell

Dr. Wilner would love your feedback! Click here to send a text! Thanks! Many thanks to Ross Powell, Founder of Survival 401k. After leaving the Navy, Ross worked for many years in the financial and insurance industries. About 12 years ago, he founded Survival401k, where he helps self-employed individuals create and manage a 401k.  Traditionally considered a retirement vehicle for stocks and bonds, a 401k can also be used for investing in real estate, other nonconventional investments, and asset protection. One can even take a loan from one's own 401k! During our 30-minute program, Ross shared his financial experience and insights. Although he is not a certified public accountant (CPA) or certified financial planner (CFP), Ross knows the 401k vehicle inside and out. To contact Ross, go to his website: https://www.survival401k.com/ Or his personal cell: 210.639.7227 PS: If you mention you heard Ross on The Art of Medicine, you’ll earn a $100 discount on his services. Managing grief with Kelly Edmondson and "Timely Presence"

Dr. Wilner would love your feedback! Click here to send a text! Thanks! Many thanks to nurse and grief counselor Kelly Edmondson for joining me on Episode #170 of The Art of Medicine with Dr. Andrew Wilner.  Kelly founded “Timely Presence” after the tragic loss of her oldest son, Darius, to SUDEP (sudden unexpected death in epilepsy). Darius had epilepsy that he treated with medication, but Kelly never suspected that he could die suddenly. His death was a shock unlike any other. “Timely Presence” is designed to help people after the immediate social support surrounding the funeral disappears. The first 12 months following the loss of a loved one, especially on key days like anniversaries, birthdays, and Mother’s and Father’s Day, are particularly stressful. While friends and colleagues may wish to help, they may not know how. “Timely Presence” helps reframe the rituals that accompany these special days. As a bereaved mother and grief counselor, Kelly also offers advice for those suffering from grief. For more information, contact Kelly at https://thetimelypresence.com. #grief #death #bereavement @kellyedmondson @timelypresence                          Please click "Fanmail" and share your feedback!
