    La Migra

    Today we're going through two stories in one episode. The first is the story of two guys trying to make their way back to Oregon from the Mexican state of Baja California Sur, their run-ins with corrupt police, drunk drivers, and the Mexican military. The second story is about Judy and Pedro Landeros. Much of Pedro's adult life has been tangled up in the US Immigration system. After a series of deportations, one of them after he married his American girlfriend. This is their roller-coaster of a story detailing how Pedro finally gained status as a US Resident.     The Bear Cage

    Before podcasts and radio and tv, people passed stories down to the younger generations. A podcast listener sent in his memory of a story an old man named Arthur told him back in the 1980s. The tragic events of this story take place in the Wallowa Mountain logging scene in the 1930s. It involves a disabled former logger named Merle, his roadside bar, and a bear cub.     Oregon or Bust

    Living in Long Beach, CA in 1971, my grandma was reluctant to go along with my grandpa's wish to move to Oregon. Then the 6.6 magnitude Sylmar-San Fernando earthquake struck Southern California. She'd finally had enough. Pretty much every step of their journey to Oregon was fraught with problems, peril, and restless kids. Using her phone recorder, my grandma talks about my family's trek to their new home in Oregon.

Back in the 2000s, though, things were a little rougher for the fresh California transplant.     Hello and welcome to the Oregon Story Project. This is something I’ve wanted to do for a while now, over a year, actually. I’ve always found myself sort of strapped for time between work, school, and just regular adult life. Since the COVID-19 virus finally came to Oregon and essentially shut everything down, I figured that now would be a good time to start. There’s a lot going on right now. It’s a scary and uncertain time. One silver lining in all of this is that I’ve seen the good sides of so many people. People I know, people I don’t. Sure, this huge change in our way of lives happened abruptly. It went from abstraction to a real threat in just a matter of days. But our response to it all has also been pretty quick. And just as fast as the virus hit, so has a newfound sense of community. Not just on a local level, but regional, and even global. One thing this virus has reminded us of is that we’re all humans. Left-wingers, hard-line conservatives, the people of Iraq, the people of Afghanistan, The United States, Italy, Canada. The toils of war and and conflict seem to just fade in light of all of this.  Ever since the first humans started forming villages, we’ve been telling stories to each other. It’s something that’s almost as much of a part of our DNA as anything else. So that’s what I’m after here. I want to tell compelling stories during this time of quarantine and isolation. I want to push forward that newfound sense of community and solidarity.
