    The 4(+1) Cups of Joy

    The four cups of the Seder correspond not only to the four languages of redemption—Vehotzeiti, Vehitzalti, Vega’alti, Velakachti—but also to four practical pathways to simcha (joy), with a fifth, Veheiveiti, representing a higher joy we await. Rebbe Nachman teaches that true simcha can be activated through simple joy (mili d’shtuta – lighthearted silliness), gratitude (hoda’ah), finding one’s good points (nekudot tovot), and physical expression like singing and dancing, while the highest level is connecting to the future redemption (simchat ha’atid).     The Going Backward to Go Forward

    In Parshat Vayikra, the Torah describes the Korban Omer using the word “Ve’im,” which usually implies something optional, yet here it refers to an חובה, hinting to the inner confusion a person feels in spiritual growth. The Omer, made from barley—animal food—represents the אדם במצב של ירידה, when he feels distant, frustrated, and unsure if he is advancing. Rebbe Nachman teaches that דווקא through setbacks, confusion, and feeling “backwards,” a person becomes a vessel to receive the Infinite Light of Shavuot, the level of Keter. This is why we count “to the Omer” rather than toward Shavuot—because the דרך to true elevation begins from embracing the מקום הנמוך with emunah and persistence. What appears as “if”—uncertainty and doubt—is in truth “when,” a guaranteed process of growth, where every setback is preparing a person for a higher revelation of Hashem’s light.     The Wisdom That Gives Strength to Continue

    Nisan is the New Year for Kings, representing the renewal of spiritual kingship through the tzaddikim who embody and reveal God’s sovereignty in every generation. Rebbe Nachman teaches that the month of Nisan carries a spiritual “gravitational pull” that draws people closer to God through these righteous leaders, who guide others into a living experience of the Divine Presence. The construction of the Mishkan demonstrates this principle: although the structure was too heavy for Moshe to erect, God told him to act as if he were lifting it while Hashem completed the task, revealing that God’s dwelling in the world is established through the efforts of the tzaddik together with divine assistance. In the same way, the tzaddikim of every generation help build the spiritual dwelling place of the Shekhinah within the world and within the Jewish people. Reb Noson’s early longing to connect with elder chassidim, despite his family’s opposition, reflects the deep human need for such guidance and inspiration. Torah study alone is not the full goal; the essential element is warmth, feeling, and living connection, transforming Torah from something merely learned into something experienced. Chassidic teachings restore this vitality, showing how authentic Yiddishkeit must combine learning, prayer, and emotional attachment to God, allowing a person not only to know about the Divine Presence but to truly feel and live with it.     Fighting 11 With 11

    In Parshat Vayakhel-Pekudei, the Torah describes two coverings of the Mishkan—ten inner curtains and eleven outer drapes made from goat hair. The ten represent the essence of holiness and the deepest root of the Jewish soul, corresponding to the ten types of melody that have the power to repair even the most profound spiritual damage. Surrounding them are the eleven drapes, which parallel the eleven spices of the Ketoret that confront impurity and extract holiness trapped within it. This structure reflects how holiness is protected: the outer level, associated with simcha and the power of the Ketoret, guards the deeper holiness within. The Mishkan itself also represents the Tzaddikim who draw souls back to Hashem, while their followers strengthen joy and holiness among the Jewish people so that the deeper rectification will not be needed. Through simcha and holiness, the sparks trapped in impurity are elevated and restored.     The Destruction is Really a Vessel

    Rebbe Nachman teaches that the center of the universe is rooted in the revelation of the Infinite Light that shines into the world through the central point in Jerusalem, specifically the Foundation Stone in the Holy of Holies. Creation unfolded when a ray from the Infinite Light entered the primordial hollow space and struck this center point, from which the entire world expanded outward, similar to how a body develops from the navel or how a plant grows from its central stem. Midrashim describe the world spreading in all directions from this point, portraying the flow of divine nourishment descending like an umbilical cord that sustains all existence. Even after the destruction of the Beit Hamikdash, this spiritual center remains active, and the world continues to receive both chayut—basic life-force—and shefa—abundant blessing—from this source. King Solomon’s extraordinary wisdom in knowing where to plant every fruit and vegetable reflected his deep understanding of how creation is rooted in this central point and how divine sustenance flows through it into the world.
