    64. Trading Through Tragedy: 9/11 Reflections

Twenty-five years on, Nic and Damian look back at September 11, 2001 — from the perspective of two traders who were at work as the events unfolded. There was no script that day. Information arrived in fragments, the markets were reacting, and nobody knew what was going to happen next. What did we know when the first reports came through? How did our understanding change as the second aircraft hit the South Tower, the Pentagon was attacked and Flight 93 came down in Pennsylvania? And what did it mean for people inside a major financial institution, trying to understand their exposures, manage risk and make decisions in real time? This isn't a history lesson or a detailed retelling of 9/11. It's a personal reflection on what it was like to experience that extraordinary day from inside a trading room — and on the challenges of decision-making, risk management and communication when the information available to you is incomplete and events are moving faster than you can understand them. For traders, risk professionals, auditors, compliance and investigation teams, and anyone interested in how financial institutions respond to extreme uncertainty, there are some familiar themes here. Twenty-five years later, hindsight gives us the complete story. On the day itself, we had almost none of it. 63. Radiant World: What Are the Lessons for Lenders?

In this episode, Nic and Damian examine the collapse of Radiant World and ask a broader question: what are the lessons for lenders? Radiant World became a significant player in the global iron ore market. Its rapid growth, extensive trading relationships and use of trade finance provide the backdrop for a discussion about how commodity transactions are financed — and what can happen when the underlying assets, invoices or claims supporting that finance are not independently verified. The episode looks at the mechanics and scale of iron ore trading, the history and growth of Radiant World, and the relationships it developed with major counterparties including Glencore. Against that background, Nic and Damian consider the allegations surrounding the use of invoices and other documentation to obtain finance, the importance of independent verification, and the difficulties lenders can face in establishing who really has a claim on an asset. But Radiant World is not the only case that raises these questions. Why do banks and other financial institutions keep getting caught out in collateralised lending? Why can lenders have difficulty establishing who really owns, controls or has a claim against an asset? And are we seeing repeated structural weaknesses in the way collateralised and trade-backed lending is conducted? Nic and Damian draw comparisons with previous commodity-finance failures and consider what lenders, auditors, investigators and risk professionals should be looking for when assessing the reality behind the documents. This episode will be of particular interest to lenders, trade-finance professionals, internal auditors, compliance and investigation teams, lawyers and anyone involved in commodity finance or collateralised lending.
