Today's Guest: Dr. Terrance Sanders, Founder and Director of A Father's Legacy What does it mean to lead with influence, and how can the people who believe in us change the direction of our lives? In this episode, Susan sits down with Dr. Terrance Sanders, a retired U.S. Army Lieutenant Colonel, Leadership Fredericksburg Class of 2026 President, and founder of A Father's Legacy. From beginning his military career as a private to serving in leadership positions during two combat tours in Iraq, Terrance shares the experiences and mentors that shaped his understanding of leadership. He reflects on the importance of character, humility, discipline, and the responsibility leaders have to care for the people they serve. The conversation also explores the personal experiences that inspired Terrance to establish A Father's Legacy, a nonprofit dedicated to supporting young fathers in the Fredericksburg region through mentorship, education, and resources that help break the cycle of fatherlessness. In this episode, Tom joins Susan to reflect on more than 25 years of leadership and the lessons he has carried from banking and economic development to his role here in the Fredericksburg region. He shares how taking risks, stepping into unfamiliar opportunities, building meaningful relationships, and learning from others have shaped the leader he is today. “I’m a strong believer in invitations. When an invitation is given, I usually try to say yes.” Tom also shares why humility is essential to successful leadership, the importance of surrounding yourself with people you can learn from, and why great leaders should look for opportunities to recognize and develop the strengths in others.
