20 episodes

In this ten part series, veteran broadcast audio mixer or A1, Andrew Stoakley talks with eleven A1’s about what got them interested in the craft and why we love what it is we do. This series is not about the nuts and bolts about the job, it was intended to be a conversation between two or three people who love what they do and why they do it.

This concept was something I had been thinking about doing for a long time. My first love has always been radio and in part of my professional life, I help other people build their own podcast studios. When the COVID-19 pandemic sadly occurred, it allowed me to work on this pet project” says Stoakley. “The title comes from my own issues with idle hands - I hate it! I hope you find the conversations as interesting as I did to record them and I think it really shines a little light into the world of television audio.”

Best of Pandemic

Looking back, the pandemic gave us several gifts. I’m not arguing they were worth the cost, just that amidst the uncertainty & suffering, there were bright spots, things for which now we had time & space, like it or not. This was one of them.

The few times I’ve been in a broadcast truck, I’ve been overwhelmed. So much in such a tiny space! Only on the way out would I see the audio room/closet and think, “That’s where I’d be,” and wonder what it was like to drive a monster board like that, providing everything that turns video of sports into an immersive, intense experience. And provide feeds for eight different destinations plus manage RF, comms, and troubleshoot whatever’s going wrong this week while listening for cues, talkback, and occasionally monitoring the actual audio.

This podcast made me wish i would have said “F$%# it” twenty years ago and hopped on a crew. And then it delivers the next best thing — an engaging, fascinating look behind the semi trailer door with enough tech talk to perk my ears and enough storytelling to keep non-gearheads interested. I’m sorry it had to go away but when working gigs came back, we all answered the call.

Whether you’re interested in a career or just interested, this is a well-produced & fascinating series.
