Stirring the Soul (and 20% Off!)

Today is a departure from my usual kind of episodes. I have only one quote for you. It is from John Muir. Muir was an American naturalist, author, environmental philosopher, botanist, zoologist, glaciologist, and early advocate for the preservation of wilderness in the United States. I chose his quote because I am on vacation in Glacier National Park in northwestern Montana, and this quote speaks to how I feel in places like this. As I type this, I am sitting by the huge fireplace in the lobby of my favorite lodge in my favorite place in the world. The temperature dropped into the 40s and 50s last night and today, and it is supposed to be in the upper 30s overnight, so a fire in the fireplace is perfect. I'm kind of in heaven! Anyway, I recorded the episode this (Sunday) morning at another spot in this lobby, so I didn't want to spend too much time on it, as there were other people around where I was recording, and we had a tour of another portion of the park we were heading out to. (The tour was awesome, by the way.) So, you will hear only one quote.  However, in the second half of the episode, I talk about a special discount I am giving to any schools, businesses, or organizations who book me to speak to their people in August or September. I have never offered a discounted price on my speaking gigs, and I don't know if I will again in the future. But I do know that this is a great deal and an incredible way for you to get me out to speak to your organization and help them develop to become the best they are capable of becoming. Pride 3

With July being "Pride" month, I thought I would do a series on the concept of Pride. No, I'm not talking about the pride associated with LGBTQ+ issues. While I have no problem with that kind of pride and the importance of LGBTQ+ people's rights, I don't want to get into those issues on a podcast about Great Quotes for Coaches. Today, we end this series on the concept of pride that I have struggled with my entire life - the dichotomy between the positive kind of pride in one's accomplishments and the negative kind of pride that goes too far into arrogance, boastfulness, and vanity that has been named one of the 7 Deadly Sins. As always, I am so grateful to all of you who support the podcast! I do this show because of you.
