Good Friday and "The Great Instead" | A Poem That Helps You Sit With the Cross

Good Friday has a way of stripping the air out of a room. It’s the day when the story looks like it’s falling apart: the King isn’t crowned, He’s crucified, and what should feel like victory feels like loss. If you’ve ever stared at your own life and thought, “This can’t be how it ends,” you’ll recognize the tension we’re sitting in here.  I’m Tosha Williams, founder of Family Disciple Me Ministry and co-founder of Vanguard Church in Colorado Springs, and I want to slow down during Holy Week instead of rushing to the celebration. I share why I turn to poetry when plain teaching can’t carry the weight, and I read a Good Friday poem I wrote called “The Great Instead.” Line by line, it traces the exchanges of the cross: throne replaced by wood, honor replaced by mockery, light replaced by darkness, hope laid in a tomb. Then it turns, showing the deeper Christian theology of atonement and reversal, where God breaks sin’s curse and brings light through what looks like defeat.  This is a reflective, prayerful Good Friday meditation for anyone seeking a deeper walk with Jesus, a clearer view of the crucifixion, and language for suffering that still makes room for hope. After you listen, share it with someone who needs steady hope and subscribe for more faith-based discipleship.  What “instead” do you most need God to write into your story right now? Spend time with Jesus this week. Listen and linger with Him, then lead someone else in His Presence this Easter! ______________________ The Family Disciple Me ministry exists to catalyze devotion driven discipleship in our homes and around the world. DESTINATION DECISIONS | Convo #6: Weapon or Tool?

Every day, you and your kids are offering something—your words, your hands, your screens, your habits. The question isn’t if you’re being used, but how. Tool… or weapon? In this episode of "Destination Decisions," we dig into Romans 6:13, where the apostle Paul uses a word that can mean weapon or tool. That tension lands close to home. Tools build, repair, and bless when they’re trained and guided. Weapons tear down when they’re misused—or aimed the wrong direction. Scripture doesn’t let us stay neutral: “Offer every part of yourself to God as an instrument of righteousness.” Every part. Every day. A flooded basement forced host Tosha Williams and her family to strip everything back—and that’s when the deeper lesson surfaced. With friends lending tools and teaching safe technique, dangerous equipment became instruments of repair. That same shift—from risk to restoration—frames our conversation about how every part of us can build or break. We explore a simple yet piercing idea from Romans 6:13: your body, voice, and choices can play the role of weapon or tool, and the difference comes down to who you offer them to and what story you serve. We unpack what this looks like in real life, from the words we speak to the posts we publish. Parents, mentors, and caring adults get practical steps to train kids with the same patience and clarity you’d use with a saw: model, coach, supervise, and celebrate growth. We connect the dots to 2 Timothy 2, where moving from common to special use means becoming holy, useful, and ready for good work. Expect examples you can try today—pausing before you text, choosing to bless when you could bite, and setting rhythms that make purpose feel normal. We also address a rising pressure that can’t be ignored: teens turning weapons inward. We name the lies, offer language for hard conversations, and share a steady path forward—presence, wise escalation, and practices that honor both God and the person he loves. By the end, you’ll have a simple inventory to guide your week: where did my feet go, what did my tongue choose, and how did my hands serve? Join us, reflect with your family, and take one step toward being a tool in the Master’s hands. DESTINATION DECISIONS | Convo #1: Introduction

You’re not standing still; you’re already on a path, and every decision you make is taking you somewhere. This is true for you and for every person entrusted to you. If every decision is a step, then where are your steps taking you? In this opening conversation of "Destination Decisions," we turn to the wisdom of our theme verse Proverbs 4:18–19, where Scripture draws a clear contrast between two paths: one bright and increasingly clear, the other dark and disorienting. Every day, whether we realize it or not, we are choosing which path to walk—and every choice is moving us somewhere. This episode invites listeners to slow down and consider how daily decisions shape spiritual direction. Through the Seek Him Speak Him framework, we begin by meeting with God in His Word, asking three simple but powerful questions: What is God saying? Why does it matter? How should we respond? Scripture becomes more than something we read—it becomes a lamp for our feet and a light for our path. Jesus said He is the Light of the world, and following Him changes how we walk. Instead of stumbling forward in uncertainty, we learn how to choose a well-lit path marked by truth, wisdom, and faithfulness. These conversations are designed to be practical, repeatable, and accessible—meant to move easily from personal devotion into meaningful discipleship moments with kids, grandkids, students, or friends. As we consider our own direction, we’re also invited to bring others along. Discipleship begins with a conversation, and every path is an invitation. The question isn’t whether you’re on a path. The question is: which destination are your decisions leading you toward? Share this episode with someone navigating an important choice, and start walking the bright path—one faithful step at a time. The devotion-driven discipleship conversation guide that goes along with this episode can be found in the Family Disciple Me app. ______________________ The Family Disciple Me ministry exists to catalyze devotion driven discipleship in our homes and around the world. DESTINATION DECISIONS | Convo #3: Lies or Truth

Lies don’t usually start loud—they start convenient. A small bend of the truth. A quiet omission. A moment that feels easier than honesty. But every step is taking us somewhere. In this Destination Decisions conversation, Lies or Truth?, we press into the tension we all recognize:  how quickly “little lies” become normal, and why Scripture treats truth not as a preference, but a path. Rooted in Proverbs 12:22, we explore what it means that the Lord delights in people who are trustworthy, and how repeated choices slowly train the heart toward either clarity or confusion. This episode helps families name what’s really at stake. Lies don’t just damage trust; they make us vulnerable to deception. Truth, practiced consistently, forms discernment, confidence, and freedom. We contrast the enemy’s aim as the father of lies with Jesus’ own words: “I am the Way and the Truth.” Direction matters—and so does destination. You’ll hear a simple, disarming visual that changes the tone at home: a "Destinations Chart" that pairs Lies with deception and Truth with Jesus’ character. Instead of shaming kids for mistakes, parents learn to ask a better question: Which direction is this choice taking you? We also introduce a powerful habit—quarterly “truth dates”—creating intentional space for honest conversation through consistent, grace-filled questions that invite confession without fear. Real change starts with modeling. When parents own their missteps, ask forgiveness, and return quickly to the light, truth becomes the family default. This isn’t about perfection. It’s about direction. And remember, discipleship starts with a conversation. The devotion-driven discipleship guide that accompanies this conversation is available in the Family Disciple Me app. ______________________ The Family Disciple Me ministry exists to catalyze devotion driven discipleship in our homes and around the world. DESTINATION DECISIONS | Convo #4: Bad Habits or Good Health

What if your daily habits are quietly deciding your destination—long before you ever notice the outcome? In DESTINATION DECISIONS: Bad Habits or Good Health, we step into a Scripture that often surprises people: God cares about your body, not just your soul. Rooted in 3 John 1:2, this conversation explores the idea of life as a “prosperous journey” - - - one shaped by the small, repeated choices we make every day. This episode doesn’t preach perfection or promote a one-size-fits-all health plan. Instead, it invites an honest look at how our habits—food, sleep, substances, sexuality, rest, and movement—either support the life God desires for us or slowly pull us off course. We talk candidly about how easy it is to squander good health through unexamined routines, and why Scripture consistently connects holiness, wisdom, and embodied living. You’ll hear a real-life story of chronic health struggle that led to a humble pivot: fewer extremes, more prayer, and simple, sustainable habits practiced over time. From a short sugar fast that became a family rhythm to small changes that produced surprising clarity and consistency, this episode highlights how direction matters more than intensity. We also name what must be held with care: not all illness is preventable, and suffering always deserves compassion, prayer, and community—not judgment. Still, God invites us to steward what He has given us, using His resources for both His glory and our good. If you’re ready to take a gracious inventory—without shame—and make one small change that aligns your body and soul, this conversation is for you. Because every habit is a decision… and every decision leads somewhere. The devotion-driven discipleship guide that goes along with this conversation can be found in the Family Disciple Me app.  ______________________ The Family Disciple Me ministry exists to catalyze devotion driven discipleship in our homes and around the world. THE FIVE FINGER GOSPEL | A Handful of Truths to Lead a Child to Christ | Convo #5: Jesus Chose You!

A tiny voice in the back seat of a car asks for prayer, and a lifelong journey with Jesus begins. Host Tosha Williams opens with a vivid childhood memory to show how clearly a child can grasp the gospel—and how a simple tool, "The Five Finger Gospel," can help anyone understand and respond to Jesus. Each finger holds a truth you can carry anywhere: Jesus sees you, Jesus loves you, Jesus died for you, Jesus knows you, and Jesus chose you. It’s tactile, memorable, and grounded in Scripture, making it ideal for parents, mentors, and ministry leaders who want to share the good news with clarity and warmth. In this final episode in this collection of conversations, we revisit the tender honesty of small sins and big grace, then turn to the thumb as a picture of salvation: God’s thumbs up to us and our thumbs up back to Him. With Jeremiah 1:5 and John 1:12 as anchors, we make the invitation plain without pressure—He has already said yes to you; will you say yes to Him? You’ll hear how a preschool decision matured into decades of discipleship and how the same truths can spark conversations at the dinner table, in the car, or at a hospital bedside. Along the way, we highlight the shift from Seek Him to Speak Him, echoing Titus 1:1: helping God’s chosen people believe in Christ more and more. If you’re guiding a child, mentoring a teen, or reexamining your own faith, this conversation gives you language, confidence, and next steps. Try the hand motions, ask the heart-questions, and encourage simple, sincere prayer in a person’s own words. Then take the next faithful step into devotion-driven discipleship, where meeting with God overflows into making Him known. If this encouraged you, subscribe, share it with someone who needs hope today, and leave a review to help others find "The Five Finger Gospel." Who will you lift a thumbs up with this week?
