The Rising Tide: Understanding Modern Antisemitism

Prerecorded for the week of October 5, 2026: Antisemitism isn't simply a historical problem — it is a present-day threat that is changing how Jews live, worship, educate their children and participate in public life. In this special episode, Mike examined the rising tide of antisemitism, what is driving it and what can be done to fight it. This special episode asks difficult questions about where modern antisemitism comes from, why it continues to spread and how education, community and a deeper understanding of Jewish history can help confront it. How we can move beyond simply remembering what happened to ensuring that Jewish communities can live openly, safely and proudly today? Although Jews make up only about 2% of the U.S. population, they are victims of a disproportionate share of religiously motivated hate crimes - a staggering 91% of American Jews report feeling unsafe because of the rise in antisemitism and Jewish communities are spending approximately $1 billion each year on security. The episode also explored the increasingly blurred line between criticism of Israel, anti-Zionism and antisemitism, examining its growing presence on the radical right while also asking how antisemitism manifests in other ideological spaces. Can teaching the Holocaust prevent antisemitism? Only 29 states currently require Holocaust education, while troubling numbers of young Americans demonstrate a lack of basic understanding about the Holocaust. Perhaps the deeper problem is how we teach the Holocaust;  too often, education focuses on what was done to Jews while giving too little attention to the antisemitism that made the Holocaust possible. In trying to make Holocaust education universally accessible, have we inadvertently erased what makes Jewish history and antisemitism unique? The Genocide Accusation Against Israel

Prerecorded for the week of September 28, 2026: In this special episode of The Third Opinion Podcast, Mike took an in-depth look at the accusation that Israel is committing genocide in Gaza and examined the history and implications of the blood libel accusation against Israel and Jews.   The episode argued that discussions of the Israel-Hamas war often focus overwhelmingly on Israel's actions while giving insufficient attention to Hamas's conduct, including its use of civilian areas and the consequences of fighting from within the civilian population. Mike questioned the reliability of casualty figures and other information coming out of Gaza, arguing that the lack of independent and varied sources can make it difficult for the public to understand what is actually happening on the ground.   A central focus of the episode was the legal definition of genocide and, specifically, the question of intent: does Israel's conduct demonstrate an intent to destroy the Palestinian people as a group, or are the civilian deaths tragic casualties of an ongoing war? Israel's humanitarian aid, warnings and evacuation measures and the difficult reality of protecting civilians in a conflict where Hamas operates within densely populated areas points to their intent.   Understanding the actions of both sides is essential to evaluating the competing claims surrounding the war. The special episode ultimately asked listeners to look beyond headlines and emotionally charged accusations and consider the evidence, definitions, sources and context behind the claim of genocide. Macklemore to NAZA: Art, War and Antisemitism

Recorded on September 22, 2026: Laureen and Mike discuss the growing intersection of entertainment, politics, Israel and antisemitism, beginning with the controversy surrounding Ed Sheeran's Loop Tour, scheduled to come to Raymond James Stadium on November 7. Macklemore was removed from the U.S. leg of the tour after making pro-Palestinian comments, including saying "Free Palestine" during his opening set at MetLife Stadium. The controversy involved New England Patriots and Gillette Stadium owner Robert Kraft, who has said Macklemore's past comments and actions crossed a line.  The conversation then turns to NAZA, the documentary by Israeli filmmakers that won the Special Jury Prize at the Venice Film Festival after receiving a record-setting 25-minute standing ovation. The film features anonymous testimonies from 24 Israeli military and intelligence personnel and makes allegations about Israel's targeting practices in Gaza, including the use of AI-assisted systems. The filmmakers' use of anonymous sources has become a major point of controversy: the IDF has rejected the film's allegations and questioned whether the anonymous sources and their accounts can be independently verified. Israeli officials have also sharply condemned the film, with some calling for the filmmakers' citizenship to be revoked. Laureen and Mike also examine the continuing rise in antisemitism and incidents of anti-Jewish violence, particularly in Britain and elsewhere, and debate the extent to which criticism of Israel and Benjamin Netanyahu has contributed to antisemitism in the United States. They discuss differing views within the Jewish community and the difficulty of separating criticism of Israeli government policy from hostility toward Jews. Finally, the discussion turns to the war involving Iran and the Trump administration's approach to the conflict, including questions about the impact of economic sanctions, the administration's stated objectives and what the next phase of the conflict could look like. The episode closes by questioning whether the administration has articulated a clear path toward ending the conflict and what continued military and economic pressure could mean for both Iran and the United States. Peace Plans, War Strategies and a Changing Middle East

Recorded on August 17, 2026: Mike and Laureen look at a Middle East in flux, beginning with the latest U.S.-backed peace proposal for Gaza and the growing obstacles to getting a deal across the finish line. They examine whether there is a realistic path forward when both sides remain unwilling to make the concessions the other considers essential. With the current Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) expiring the same day as the recording, they ask whether the United States is preparing a new round of economic sanctions against Iran—and whether sanctions would actually change Iran's behavior. They also consider how the upcoming U.S. midterm elections could influence the administration's strategy and willingness to continue the conflict. Israel is entering a critical election season of their own. Following the latest Likud primary, the country is heading toward its October 27 general election, which could determine Benjamin Netanyahu's political future and reshape Israel's approach to both Gaza and Iran. The hosts note the formation of a new regional development is also taking shape: the defense agreement between Turkey, Pakistan and Saudi Arabia that some are calling a "Muslim NATO." What does this emerging military partnership mean for Iran, Israel, the United States and the broader balance of power in the Middle East? The episode closes with a passionate examination of one of the most controversial claims surrounding the Gaza war: the use of the word "genocide." The discussion challenges that characterization and explores the arguments behind the claim. Thank you for listening, sharing and subscribing to The Third Opinion Podcast.
