    Jameis Winston wins New Orleans Saints’ QB Battle

    Recorded: August 27, 2021 | After Drew Brees’ retirement, questions surrounding the Saints’ quarterback position loomed large heading into the 2021-22 season. Who would their QB1 be, Taysom Hill or Jameis Winston?  Last season, Hill filled in for Drew Brees and led the Saints to a 3-1 record when Brees was forced to miss time due to injury—834 passing yards, 209 rushing yards, 8 total touchdowns, 2 interceptions, 3 fumbles lost. However, Sean Payton made the decision for Jameis Winston to succeed Drew Brees as the Saints QB, beating out Taysom Hill. The Saints will kick off Week 1 against the Packers with Jameis Winston as their QB1. The decision to go with Winston over Hill is the understandable and logical decision for the Saints, especially after Winston’s preseason performance against the Jaguars—compiling 123 yards and 2 touchdowns. The move could potentially be a high risk, high reward decision by implementing an offense to fit Winston’s strengths—making the deep ball a bigger piece of New Orleans’ offense in 2021-22. This season, Hill will kick off the regular season operating as Winston's primary backup and serve his usual role as a gadget player.
