R U OK Mate? Men and Their Friendships

Even in the happiest of couples, it's normal to experience a decrease in satisfaction with the birth of the first child. While the literature over the past 20 years show that men's transition to fatherhood sits at the intersection of their social and work context, their own personal characteristics and the quality of the partnership.  Often men struggle to reconcile their personal and work‐related needs with those of their new family. The Australian Movember research found that one quarter of men aged between 30 and 65 have few or no social connections, while about one third were unsatisfied with the quality of their relationships. The two main reasons for this were that they didn't feel as if their mates could help them with problems they were facing, so they didn't bother bringing them up (79 per cent) and that they didn't feel emotionally supported (76 per cent). According to the research, male bonding is more likely to lower a man's stress levels than a night out with his partner, or time spent with the family About Graeme In his earlier career he worked in senior leadership positions with Johnson & Johnson, Pfizer, and AT Kearney. In 2000 he went through a 5-year episode of depression that his psychiatrist described as the worst he had ever treated. He emerged from this crisis with a different view about how we can increase our resilience, mood, and performance. He is described by the Australian Financial Review as a “workplace mental wellbeing expert”. He is the author of 4 books, including the internationally acclaimed BACK FROM THE BRINK, which has a testimonial from the former UK Prime Minister Tony Blair, and which has just become a best seller in China. Graeme also helped to start the charity R U OK? in 2009 and remains an active Board Director.
