Recently through the efforts of key agencies like the Houston Land Bank and Houston Community Land Trust, more people have become aware of other avenues to owning their homes. Just 7 weeks ago, we had HCLT Executive Director Dr. Ashley Allen with us to explain how, since 2019, the groups program has led 200 limited-income Houston families to an affordable home. Justa week ago, we went on a tour of a few properties all across Houston that the HCLT has helped people to move into, from rental to purchase. This was five months after it reached $38T and $37T just two months before that. The war with Iran is costing about $1 billion a day and the Pentagon is asking for another $200 billion for the effort, above it’s alreadysteep $1.5T budget. What is causing all this debt and what effect will such high debt have on our lives and the future of programs like Social Security and Medicare? We ask our frequent analyst Chetan Dave to comment on this. 4:50 pm In this era of instant connectivity andpressures of never-stop work, one can often lose sight of the aspects of life than add joy and value, creating a relief valve. In Congress, Indo American representation has increased from just one member in 2012 to six in 2024. A new candidate, Rakhi Israni, has entered into the race in California as a Democrat in the 14th Congressional District, but she has deep roots in the Houston area where shewas raised as the daughter of the well-known Dr. Haku Israni who founded Test Masters. She is currently visiting her hometown to meet with supporters and took the time out to have a telephone interview with us. 4:50 pm Just as we were warned, we are quickly getting immersed in a world of Artificial Intelligence and it is the dawn of a new computer revolution, onewhich we have to learn to navigate or be doomed to irrelevance. But how exactly should we use our cellphones to improve our efficiencies when we have to deal with CoPilot, Gemini, Gork, Perplexity, Chat GPT, Claude and the still evolving Siri? We turn to Roger Israni, who owns Test Masters - and is the older brother of Rakhi - to teach us some of the basics of AI. 5:20 pm Immigrations cases have been throwninto a chaos with changing rules of enforcement ever since the Trump Administration took office. Thousands of immigrants have been rounded up anddeported or detained in rapidly deployed detention facilities. Heavily armed and ill trained ICE agents have been sent to Democratic cities resulting in violence and deaths and provoking national protests. H1-B visas have been capped and changes made to the work authorization process, bond eligibility if detained and to asylum regulations. Many do not know their options to seek compensation for their injuries or losses. On our monthly segment on personal litigation law we once again hear from Attorney Divjyot Singh, the Managing Partner at SHEV Law Group. This exercise reminds us of the importance of knowing the laws governing the election process: who votes, why voter registration is important, what a bonafide ID is, what redistricting implies and how candidates can be made “safe” bets. To shed more light on this whole process, we turn to Nina Oishi, a voting rights staff attorney at the Texas Civil Rights Project, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit basedin Austin that advocates for voting rights, racial justice, economic justice, and criminal justice reform.
