    2ND KINGS 4:1-7 NKJV 1 A certain woman of the wives of the sons of the prophets cried out to Elisha, saying, “Your servant my husband is dead, and you know that your servant feared the Lord. And the creditor is coming to take my two sons to be his slaves.” 2 So Elisha said to her, “What shall I do for you? Tell me, what do you have in the house?” And she said, “Your maidservant has nothing in the house but a jar of oil.” 3 Then he said, “Go, borrow vessels from everywhere, from all your neighbors—empty vessels; do not gather just a few.  4 And when you have come in, you shall shut the door behind you and your sons; then pour it into all those vessels, and set aside the full ones.” 5 So she went from him and shut the door behind her and her sons, who brought the vessels to her; and she poured it out.  6 Now it came to pass, when the vessels were full, that she said to her son, “Bring me another vessel.” And he said to her, “There is not another vessel.” So the oil ceased.  7 Then she came and told the man of God. And he said, “Go, sell the oil and pay your debt; and you and your sons live on the rest.” - faith is the “sense” that gives us evidence of the invisible, spiritual world. - If you have the substance before you or if you can see it, there is no use for faith. Faith is needed for what we can’t see and can’t touch. - Faith is not a bare belief or intellectual understanding. It is a willingness to trust in, to rely on, and to cling to. - The great examples of godliness all had different circumstances and personalities, but they all had one thing in common – faith. - They needed a good testimony, and so they needed these examples of faith to break them out of discouragement. - The difference between the sacrifice of Cain and the sacrifice of Abel (⁠Genesis 4:3-5⁠) was not between animal and vegetable. The difference was that Abel’s sacrifice was made by faith. - This is the basic faith required of any who seeks God.  - We must believe that God is there, and that He will reveal Himself to the seeking heart.     HEBREWS 11:1-7 NKJV 1 Now faith is the [a]substance of things hoped for, the [b]evidence of things not seen.  2 For by it the elders obtained a good testimony. 3 By faith we understand that the [c]worlds were framed by the word of God, so that the things which are seen were not made of things which are visible. 4 By faith Abel offered to God a more excellent sacrifice than Cain, through which he obtained witness that he was righteous, God testifying of his gifts; and through it he being dead still speaks. 5 By faith Enoch was taken away so that he did not see death, “and was not found, because God had taken him”; for before he was taken he had this testimony, that he pleased God.  6 But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him. 7 By faith Noah, being divinely warned of things not yet seen, moved with godly fear, prepared an ark for the saving of his household, by which he condemned the world and became heir of the righteousness which is according to faith. - faith is the “sense” that gives us evidence of the invisible, spiritual world. - If you have the substance before you or if you can see it, there is no use for faith.     ISAIAH 49:14-18 NKJV 14 But Zion said, “The Lord has forsaken me, And my Lord has forgotten me.” 15 “Can a woman forget her nursing child, [j]And not have compassion on the son of her womb? Surely they may forget, Yet I will not forget you. 16 See, I have inscribed you on the palms of My hands; Your walls are continually before Me. 17 Your [k]sons shall make haste; Your destroyers and those who laid you waste Shall go away from you. 18 Lift up your eyes, look around and see; All these gather together and come to you. As I live,” says the Lord, “You shall surely clothe yourselves with them all as an ornament, And bind them on you as a bride does. LESSONS TO LEARN (ISAIAH 49:14-18) - The LORD’s affection for His people is greater than the devotion a woman has for her nursing child. - God is always mindful of the condition of His people, despite the objections of a doubting Zion. - Because God loves and rejoices over Zion, He will protect them. Though they were conquered before by the Babylonians, the day will come when He makes Jerusalem a praise in the earth. ISAIAH 62:6-7 6 I have set watchmen on your walls, O Jerusalem; They shall [f]never hold their peace day or night. You who [g]make mention of the Lord, do not keep silent, 7 And give Him no rest till He establishes And till He makes Jerusalem a praise in the earth. LESSONS TO LEARN (ISAIAH 62:6-7) i. The Lord Himself does not rest with regard to Zion ii. He does not want His petitioners to keep silence in their prayers for Israel iii. And He does not want His people to leave Him alone concerning Israel’s deliverance. CONTINUATION - The watchmen have a constant duty. - The watchmen are not critics; they are prayer warriors, who constantly pray, giving God “no rest” until God’s people and His city are restored. ISAIAH 62:11 11 Indeed the Lord has proclaimed To the end of the world: “Say to the daughter of Zion, ‘Surely your salvation is coming; Behold, His reward is with Him, And His [h]work before Him.’ ” - When the Lord visits you everyone will know that you were valued and chosen by God.     SALT AND LIGHT (Matthew 5:13-14) - BISHOP SIMON KAUMBUTHU M'NGARUTI

    MATTHEW 5:13-16 NKJV 13 “You are the salt of the earth; but if the salt loses its flavor, how shall it be seasoned? It is then good for nothing but to be thrown out and trampled underfoot by men. 14 “You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden.  15 Nor do they light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house.  16 Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven. LESSONS TO LEARN FROM SALT - Disciples are like salt because they are precious. In Jesus’ day, salt was a valued commodity. Roman soldiers were sometimes paid with salt, giving rise to the phrase “worth his salt.” - Disciples are like salt because they have a preserving influence. - Disciples are like salt because they add flavor. Christians should be a “flavorful” people. - Salt must keep its “saltiness” to be of any value.  LESSONS TO LEARN FROM LIGHT - Jesus gives the Christian both a great compliment and a great responsibility when He says that we are the light of the world, - Light of the world means that we are not only light-receivers, but also light-givers. We must have a greater concern than only ourselves, and we cannot live only to ourselves; we must have someone to shine to, and do so lovingly. - Jesus never challenged us to become salt or light. He simply said that we are – and we are either fulfilling or failing that given responsibility. - A key thought in both the pictures of salt and light is distinction. NOTE: - Salt is needed because the world is rotting and decaying, and if our Christianity is also rotting and decaying, it won’t be any good. Light is needed because the world is in darkness, and if our Christianity imitates the darkness, we have nothing to show the world.  - The purpose of light is to illuminate and expose what is there. Therefore light must be exposed before it is of any use – if it is hidden under a basket, it is no longer useful.
